It allows for the devs to have complete control over every aspect of the user experience to more easily facilitate the horror. It's weird you mention 0 as that game starts you on a train and there's only two ways to go; forward and back. As for my credentials as an RE fan; The original RE3 is Code Veronica. Nemesis' Original subtitle was Last Escape. And for something more modern; Laon A/Claire B is the canon story for Remake 2.
12:50 I don't get the complaints about Sniper Rifle. It came in handy when Lady D flew far away and you could snipe her from distance. Lycans set a multitude of ambush points around the Village that you can spot from distance and do a pre-emptive strike with Sniper Rifle. Even ignoring the distance, Sniper Rifle is a powerful weapon in and of itself; if you need to kill a tough enemy or a boss, Sniper Rifle is your friend. It's slightly unwieldy at close distance, but it still does its job. How could you not find a use for it?
Yeah the rifle is very useful. It's strong and accurate and unlike the magnum you get plenty of ammo . Plus it can hit multiple enemies so if you line them up in a choke point you can be really efficient with your ammo.
Not just that, but the ammunition is plentiful, making it extremely useful in boss encounters where you will likely not have enough magnum or shotgun ammunition left. Even taking out ambush enemies here and there, I had an assload of that ammunition at the end of my first playthrough.
And to think that this is game is in the same continuity as the one with, as Heisenberg mentioned, that "boulder punching a**hole". As much as I loved this game, there are definitely things I dislike, the most egregious of which was how Spencer was both saved and inspired by Miranda, ultimately leading to the events of the Resident Evil series. I'm curious if the Capcom writers plan on doing anything to the Revelations games since, you know, another Wesker is still out there possibly biding their time.
@@blakehansen5434has to be since at the start of the video he states "coming out later in the year." Reviewing this game 3 years after it came out would be quite late to the party as well 😅.
I LOVE this game. The first time I saw Castle Dimitrescu from the hilltop I just stood there for like two minutes taking in how gorgeous the game was. My only gripe is that it plays its two best cards (Castle Dimitrescu and House Beneviento) too early.
If I had to justify Chris not telling Ethan about Miranda being his wife in disguise, I would chalk it up to Chris either knowing or heavily suspecting that Ethan is one of the Mold now. And given how Eveline was able to corrupt and mind control the Bakers in the previous game, Chris thinks that something similar might be going on here. As for Chris not roping in Ethan later on in the village, I’d either move Ethan’s encounter with Chris to a bit later in the game, with it being much briefer, Chris and company having only just arrived and are playing catch up with what’s happening since they last spied on Miranda. And them as a whole being somewhat suspicious that Miranda is using Ethan to kill off the Lords, because Miranda doesn’t want to share power and that she, even in canon, only ever viewed the Lords as pawns. I do agree that Miranda as a character was kind of flat and didn’t get enough screen time to really flesh her out. Honestly, I would have combined her with elements of Lady-D’s personality, in order to give her both charisma and more of a larger than life personally to make her more memorable. Though maybe borrow Lady-D’s dragon form for the later stage of Miranda’s boss fight- as given the links to Umbrella and Miranda’s more angelic motif, the dragon helps hammer home the more satanic elements of her character as a corrupter and all around evil person, who’s love for her long-dead daughter felt more selfish then actually loving.
I never considered the fact that Chris may have been privy to Ethan’s “moldification,” but his biggest sin was executing “Mia” right in front of Ethan with no warning. Certainly he could’ve caught her while Ethan was at work and dealt with Ethan in private later. The main reason Capcom did Chris dirty was to shock the player and create intrigue for the story, but I’d hate for this to be a player’s first encounter with the legendary GOOD GUY Chris Redfield.
@@reykaisertv I don't know about intrigue. I think they were trying to craft a Wesker-like aesthetic around him. The high collar, all black, suppressed pistol is the exact getup Wesker used to use when he was running around undermining Umbrella for his own gain prior to just becoming another throwaway crazy villain. Chris was also operating outside the lines here. He wasn't technically working directly under BSAA orders, which is why his team was keen on engaging the BSAA when they arrived. He probably IS some sort of rogue actor, likely considered a renegade by at least some of the major players. If anything, I think it retroactively creates interest to new people, because they'll inevitably learn Chris is a longtime character and will want to see how he changed over the course of the series.
Played this game as many times as I have RE4...so something about it is good enough for me to come back multiple times. Silly but fun. Great gameplay as well.
I actually liked 5 a lot, espcially playing with someone else. 6 is also worth playing if you can get it cheap on one of those frequent RE sales on Steam. It's ridiculous, over-the-top, and QTE-heavy, but also co-op and I liked the new characters they introduced to the roster of protags--again, over-the-top and ridiculous, but I kind of expect that sort of thing from the series (and Japanese games, in general 😂 ). Unfortunately haven't seen any of them reappear again, but they might.
The early resident evils, I loved how they didn't give you enough bullets to kill everything, which led to tense hand to hand moments and even times where the best option was to run.
I want you to know MrDrinker sir.... I back out of the video only to reopen it and force a 30 second unskippable ad.. I hope my sacrifice is seen and heard. Anyways... Love the channel!
RE is my favourite game series. There were some big lows, but the highs are so high, they overpower the lows. I mean, my top 10 of all times has both RE4 and the Remake, the Remake of the original 1996 classic and RE2. 40% of the list.
I'd have to disagree with Ethan not being much of a character, I actually do love Ethan. I do agree that he goes back and forth between a civilian to an agent. In 7, they kinda make him seem like a civilian but the reveal was that he knew Chris and the other agents. Also regarding the inventory management, I can understand people wanting limited space like the legacy games but that definitely needed to be modernized, especially since Village used Resident 4 as a basis for its game design. It was definitely an 8.5/10 for me, my favorite after RE4.
8 has the best inventlry system, crafting and key items are on their own, unlike in RE4R but that has the weapon box which made my inventory management far better.
"I can understand people wanting limited space like the legacy games but that definitely needed to be modernized, especially since Village used resident 4 as a basis for its game design." Nope. In RE4, you're ALWAYS managing your inventory, even after you've completely maxed out the size of it. In village, you never need to manage it. You can conquer the whole game without doing it. I like Village. It's fun and enjoyable, but it's very flawed. For a game that's inspired by RE4, it completely misses the point of it and holds your hand. It's NOT a challenging game. The "puzzles" aren't puzzles, and the amount of scripted segments (House Beneviento, specifically) is a massive turn off. Heisenberg's factory is best section of the game because it's the only area where you can easily get lost and have to figure out where to go--a fundamental element of the classic games, 7, and the remakes of 2 and 4.
Village on PSVR2 is how I played it and I'm so happy I waited. 7 and 8 in VR is the sort of quality I wish VR had regularly 😂. Great video as always Critical. Though I gotta say, I felt Ethan was actually pretty fleshed out through his like 20 lines of dialogue. No joke. Edit: The biggest issue with Miranda is that all of her backstory is in missable notebooks 🙃
I think one of the ways they could have fixed the story, even if it was so minor, is that Chris should go ahead and tell Ethan right there at the beginning this is not your wife this is Miranda, then Ethan goes with Chris to try to protect Rose, then the ambush happens where the cars get knocked over and Rose goes missing, Ethan is the first to wake up he tries to wake up Chris, but then realizes Rose is missing so he runs off by himself to try to save her because it is his daughter. While through this whole thing wondering what happened to Mia. I think they could have kept Chris his less of a dick attitude in this story while also really removing why Chris had to act so mysterious through this. There really was no point in him trying to be mysterious. If anything do I thought Ethan was getting training from Chris so if anything Chris would tell Ethan about what's happening.
RE is one of my favorite franchises. Loved the remakes of 2-4. I’ve played most of the mainline entries (and Code Veronica) and the their remakes, aside from 5 and 6.
I view 7 & 8 as general love letters to horror- so 7 is all tcm, evil dead, saw, the thing. 8 goes a bit more classical with it's own take on Dracula, the wolfman, Frankenstein etc. I didn't expect to enjoy 8 & held off getting it until I could pick it up cheaply but was surprised how much I enjoyed it.
This one was a dud to me, mainly for the criticisms you mentioned. I didn't find the majority of the game challenging (especially with the puzzles) outside of the Foundry and Miranda. I really wanted to like the castle because of its polish, but it was so linear and challenge-free. I believe this was a direct response to people saying 7 was too difficult, which is a demographic of people that should be ignored.
I like that Capcom has given us a variety of titles since 7. Personally, I like the art design in village much better; 7 was nasty and decaying in every section of the game. You need beauty to contradict the filth, which makes the horror that much more potent. If they made a game that played like 7, with the art design of 8, it might be the best RE yet!
@ajarmetta I'm cautiously optimistic. 4R was a great return to form, and I hope they continue down the path of keeping it challenging and survival horror based. I also prefer they don't phone in the last 3rd of the game like in Village and 7
Your part about Miranda made me miss Wesker again 😂 Also, its been a theory of mine that Chris was the one that was supposed to be killed, especially since he's getting up there in years, but that someone chickened out and insisted they couldnt kill Chris Redfield. (Especially in a game that didnt have Wesker in it, imo) Depending on how they did it, it couldve been so intense.
I've always played games just once but for some reason I played this one multiple times, the first game I ever speed ran. I like it because it feels like what if Universal Monsters were filtered through Resident Evil.
I subscribed in hopes you do more videos like this. I don't like to watch people play games or streamer type videos. This content is what I'm on UA-cam for.
I haven't played the first person RE games. Maybe I will give them a shot. I loved the original RE4 and the 2 revelation games. I even enjoyed playing RE3 remake and the RE2 remake until I hit a bug that kept me from finishing it. I've played the original RE1 and code veronica but never finished them. Couldn't get used to the tank controls. Waiting for the RE1 remake if that ever happens. Thanks for the review.
I was 18 when I played the first Resident Evil on PS1 and I've been a fan of the franchise ever since. I really liked the remakes, and since I also like wolves and gothic, I found Village really cool. Too bad there are such scary parts though.
You REALLY need to play the VR version of this. I avoided all spoilers, then got to play through using PSVR2 without knowing anything (other than there was a rather curvy vampire eventually :P ) Try it, you won't be disappointed !
I actually enjoyed village quite a bit, sure the beginning was exposition-heavy, but that lycant attack was a great intro, obviously a homage to 4, and I enjoyed the variety in level-design: The Castle has puzzles, and more standard enemies, House Benavento is almost all puzzle and has no weapons, the wolf segment on the way to the dam has players running from cover to cover, then the more action-heavy lab and Chris segments, has plenty of side quests and unlockable content as well. Played it again in VR mode and holy crap, had family members quit playing it because of how scary it was (VR hits different).
The factory settings and enemies were really cool, and felt inline with an Umbrella facility. I really liked the enemy design. Minus the mechs I would have preferred a game with more of that aesthetic.
I really enjoyed this game. Challenging puzzles, interesting characters, dark and ominous settings, Enjoyable combat and realistic weapons. Probably my favorite RE after RE 2 and RE 2 Remake. Can’t wait for Code: Veronica Remake!
The rifle is extremely useful because it is powerful and the ammunition is plentiful. Not only is it relatively cheap to craft, but it's lying around everywhere on the map. I think I found more rifle ammunition in the game than shotgun ammunition. Not to mention you can very quickly swap between your rifle and shotgun for insane dps.
7 was dull and felt like a railshooter game. 8 was off-the-walls nonsensical and raised more questions than it answered. 9 is gonna be "interesting" to say the least... ending in a 💥GIANT EXPLOSION💥
Not sure about the sniper rifle comment. I found it plenty usefull in the many medium range encouters in the game as well as a high damage dealer against bosse's weakspots.
Being from eastern europe, its exactly like this. Many countryside villages have the exact same houses, architecture, lomoted technology and old traditional people.
I finished this on psvr2 last month. Amazing and memorable experience despite the flaws of this game. Oh and the factory boss battle and doll house are absurd in vr
Ive just found this channel and love it. I also said that re7 to me felt like a mix of texas chainsaw massacre and the game granny. And my opinion on 8 was that it didnt feel like an re game at all to me. Vampires and werewolves just dont give out the creep factor anymore since hollywood has romanticised them. And not even gomna mention the robot heisenberg
I absolutely loved how insane this game was. It was truly hilarious and still manages to get pretty terrifying from time to time. Also, Ethan Winters has to be the dumbest man alive, yet a dedicated father.
It was cool seeing game reviews. You can tell you was sitting on his vocals being recorded. "The game came out this year." It's been out since 2021. 😂😂
Drinker... That double door that bugged you at the end of Resident Evil 1 on the original Playstation - You mentioned it in a previous review that you always wanted to go through it/wondered what was on the other side/thought it was odd it was there but not accessible. Well, it turns out you CAN go through it, but only if you get the bad ending (i.e. play as Jill, Barry dies in the caves and you only fight the Tyrant once in the lab). After the lab fight with the Tyrant, you pick up a key from Weskers body and exit via THAT door (from the other side though - Its the room with a ladder, typewriter and box). You exit via that door because with the bad ending there is no second Tyrant fight on the helipad and the mansion does NOT explode - Instead you get a scene of the Tyrant watching you fly away with ominous music playing. I've completed the game a million times back at the time of release, modern day, and even I only just got that ending a couple years ago and I was like wtf how come i've never seen this 😲 I only got the ending because I Fecked up in the caves... I had paused it to do something right at the point Barry ran off, then I un-paused and didn't realise where he ran to and I retardedly ran the opposite direction causing him to die by hunter - As Barry would say "I was careless". There is also an "ultimate cut" which is a modded directors cut but it has the "good music" re-inserted, together with uncut/colour and higher quality FMV. Can download online, burn to disc/run on original hardware or play via emulator. Anyway, hope you see this post as there is nothing more satisfying than a mystery solved and greetings from sunny East Ayrshire.
That was the first ending I got back when it released on the PS1. Was great learning that I could do it a different way and save Barry. I played that game sooo much. And screw the Directors Cut. Just want anywhere near as good.
@@peterc3262 Awww poor you getting the bad ending right off the bat and more so, poor Barry haha. I am in the same camp on RE, directors cut is questionable on content. I had the original back in the day then bought DC expecting uncut FMV's and was sorely disappointed as we all know. Honestly though, the RE Ultimate Directors Cut is the happy medium, keeps original item placement (with option to do DC rejiggered) and keeps the original/good music. The PC has the best port nowadays though with an AI upscale, implements quick turn etc and just runs more friendly on modern systems. Out of curiosity, back in the day were you PAL or NTSC? I played on PAL 50hz back in the day (didn't know any better/wasn't much choice) and with some games I run nowadays I notice the 60hz (20%) difference in game speed and I lean back to the PAL slower speed because its what I was used to. I don't think so much with RE as i've become accustomed to that speed playing all the different versions but some games my timing is definitely off.

Once games began getting too long for reviewers to finish before submitting some 'hype', developers simply began putting the best in the beginning. The first 10-20 hours tops in most every game today is the best part of the experience with either the story falling apart or disappearing , or the grind begins as artificial speed bumps to slow your progress to finish. BTW - I'm sick of STAMINA being the new difficulty gate as developers use it to control everything about a player today.
One thing I like about the village is the main boss has actively made the whole village into a sort of cult for her and her design is clearly inspired by angels from the bible. She made herself a figure to be worshipped and she kept the people isolated and stuck in the past. Also the wolfsbane revolver that gun was beautiful, powerful and the ammo was rare so when you use it you really needed it
I loved this game, I think the key was kicking the difficulty up. For the combat at least. I’ve found most games are best played on hard these days. Critiques were all legit tho.
I had never played any of the RE games before Village, and really, I only got it because I was curious about the vampire dommy mommy everyone was simping over. I thought the game was ok, but I really didn't expect to spend so much time solving puzzles and running back and forth. I wanted more action. I guess I should have played 6 instead.

Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate etc. Just don't know if they're your cup of tea (shot of whiskey?) given your apparent favoring of games like Resident Evil and Tomb Raider series. Also a look at the story/lore of the Halo games vs. the travesty is that is the TV show would be a fun watch.
I think RE4 did a great job balancing the RE formula while exploring some medieval/fantasy-religious influences. That's something that RE8 couldn't do. There was too much Tim Burton and "Twilight" than there was RE. RE4 had motivation from the bad guys even though they were a religious cult out of the way from the original zombie outbreak but it showed that other places were infected and there was a cult who wanted to control it and use it for power. RE8 kinda comes off random in a lot of ways but is still enjoyable.
was thinking of picking up the game for a while, realised you were an RE expert and saw this video, what have i been doing with my life the past few years???

RE8's inventory management seemed like Ethan had learned from RE7 on how to manage his gear. The same is true for the reload animation - in RE7 he would toss the empty (or half empty) magazines, but in RE8 he holds onto them.

That's not a nock against RE. All Horror games at the time and even most now are very Linear. It's just the nature of the game. It allows for the devs to have complete control over every aspect of the user experience to more easily facilitate the horror.
It's weird you mention 0 as that game starts you on a train and there's only two ways to go; forward and back.
As for my credentials as an RE fan;
The original RE3 is Code Veronica.
Nemesis' Original subtitle was Last Escape.
And for something more modern;
Laon A/Claire B is the canon story for Remake 2.
I absolutely loved RE Village. Was so much fun.
It was my first Maxed Out Gun 😅. It's awesome. However I did play in VR.
When fully upgraded, it is the strongest, most available high DPS weapon. It was my go-to weapon for boss fights / elites.
The Chris Redfield cracks got me good.
i really hope the critical gamer gets as big as drinker
Well, all these videos were already on his side channel, befoe
Yeah are these all re uploads?
@@blakehansen5434yeah
@@blakehansen5434has to be since at the start of the video he states "coming out later in the year." Reviewing this game 3 years after it came out would be quite late to the party as well 😅.
I LOVE this game. The first time I saw Castle Dimitrescu from the hilltop I just stood there for like two minutes taking in how gorgeous the game was. My only gripe is that it plays its two best cards (Castle Dimitrescu and House Beneviento) too early.
That scream has been so familiar to me and yesterday I watched Event Horizon again after years hahaha
I recently realized that Heisenberg, the metal magic guy is voiced by Neil Newbon, Astarion from Baldur's Gate 3
Neil also voiced Nicholai for RE3 remake. I think the character might have been modelled after him as well but I'm not 100% certain on that part.
Honestly didn’t think I’d enjoy this channel but man, I’m loving it! What a fool I was!!!
Stop meat riding
RE8: Village is definitely not a bad game, but really feels like 5 different RE expansions stitched together.
Bought it cheap couple weeks ago and couldn't stop playing it!
Played this game as many times as I have RE4...so something about it is good enough for me to come back multiple times. Silly but fun. Great gameplay as well.
I recently played RE5 with a friend of mine and we had a great time, it's a fantastic co-op game
We need another co-op RE. Either another action-adventure like 5 & 6, or maybe even a limited-resources survival horror like RE2 remakE
Revelations 2 is co-op, but the other character's combat is utter shite.
'Yeah, I'm that fuckin old.' Hit way too hard! Great video!
Really enjoy your movie reviews and insights into the modern state of movies.
And now your doing game reviews too?! This is awesome. What a legend
Hope we get more game reviews from you mate 👍 good stuff
This game along with RE4 on psvr 2 is only way to play these games. Incredible stuff.
My favs are both versions of 4 and all remakes so far, 7, 8 Revelations 2. Rev1 is just okay and kinda messy and awkward with a good start.

He didn't know them. They met after RE7 and the agents trained Ethan.
@@4400seriesFAN “I’m Redfield”
8 has the best inventlry system, crafting and key items are on their own, unlike in RE4R but that has the weapon box which made my inventory management far better.
@@JoakimOtamaa plus you can collect all of the weapons in 4R
"I can understand people wanting limited space like the legacy games but that definitely needed to be modernized, especially since Village used resident 4 as a basis for its game design."
Nope.
First resident evil I ever played, and it made me buy and play 2 4 and 7. Enjoyed them all
Village on PSVR2 is how I played it and I'm so happy I waited.
It had its moments. Overall, good game. House Beneviento was so good!!
RE is one of my favorite franchises. Loved the remakes of 2-4. I’ve played most of the mainline entries (and Code Veronica) and the their remakes, aside from 5 and 6.
What a great day! Great Drinker Content! I feel blessed that I have found his channel.
Mate your format is so good you could be reviewing vacuum cleaners and I'd still watch it.
That fucking giant baby shat me up no end.
I even knew it was coming and I still shat a brick.
Same
This one was a dud to me, mainly for the criticisms you mentioned.
@@reykaisertv I like the design of the village and the castle, and even the idea of werewolf enemy types. It's just the game play that's my gripe
@@mrskinszszsim looking forward to RE9 longest dev time in franchise history and apparently gonna be set in the appalation mountains playing as chris
@ajarmetta I'm cautiously optimistic. 4R was a great return to form, and I hope they continue down the path of keeping it challenging and survival horror based. I also prefer they don't phone in the last 3rd of the game like in Village and 7
7 was too difficult? I thought 7 was a bit too easy, especially compared to the classics and even the RE2 Remake.
Your part about Miranda made me miss Wesker again 😂
Also, its been a theory of mine that Chris was the one that was supposed to be killed, especially since he's getting up there in years, but that someone chickened out and insisted they couldnt kill Chris Redfield. (Especially in a game that didnt have Wesker in it, imo)
Depending on how they did it, it couldve been so intense.
I've always played games just once but for some reason I played this one multiple times, the first game I ever speed ran.
I like it because it feels like what if Universal Monsters were filtered through Resident Evil.
I absolutely loved Village.
He can't be stopped!
The whole time I was playing this game, I had to keep reminding myself that I was playing RE and not Castlevania.
You will love Remnant 2 Drinker, I also hope that you will also review Warframe. You have real talent for this!
I subscribed in hopes you do more videos like this. I don't like to watch people play games or streamer type videos. This content is what I'm on UA-cam for.
Yes!!! I’ve followed his movie reviews for years, and I’m super excited that he has a game review site! Yay!!
It's nice to see these reviews again 😁
As a Romanian I confirm that Lady Dumitrescu is my lost lost aunt thank you for finding her !
its a real surname for sure 😂
Nah I dead ass cracked tf up when the doll was twerkin, or whatever that animation was supposed to be on my first play-through.
I remember the very first ones to. I guess we both old now lmao.
The factory settings and enemies were really cool, and felt inline with an Umbrella facility. I really liked the enemy design. Minus the mechs I would have preferred a game with more of that aesthetic.
I played through this in the psvr2 version, such a brilliant experience
"Yeah I'm that fucking old"
My hubby and I explained laser disks to a Best Buy employee the other day. I feel ya 😆
Mmmm that outro though. very nice
Loving this content!!! F ing hilarious well done sir
I absolutely loved how insane this game was. It was truly hilarious and still manages to get pretty terrifying from time to time. Also, Ethan Winters has to be the dumbest man alive, yet a dedicated father.
I loved village!!! The giant lady is the best!

@@Terminal_Apotos Oh, now I just look like a dumby. 🤣🤣

Me: "Watching / listening to the Drinker give detailed analysis of character and villain development along with the overall tone and setting of a classic game series."
Also me: "I remember Pac-Man."
I enjoyed my playthrough...but I have no urge to return to it.
I loved Village! Played 11 hours straight the first day
With it's DLC, I like this game even more. I prefer my games, especially RE, with an over the shoulder camera.
I kind of expect Geralt of Rivia to show up.
The sniper is good for bosses and what i like is somewhat faster movement and collision is tonned down
Man there are so many story heavy RPGs I'd love to hear your take on.
Should have tried it in VR. One of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had.
I'm curious if Drinker has played the two Resident Evil Outbreak games from PS2. Those are two underrated gems.
I got the second one as a gift, haven't played it.
Apparently they can still be played online to this day.

They are actually reuploads from years ago! He hasn't done any new ones so I hope this means he will bring back game reviews.
RE8's inventory management seemed like Ethan had learned from RE7 on how to manage his gear. The same is true for the reload animation - in RE7 he would toss the empty (or half empty) magazines, but in RE8 he holds onto them.
I enjoy these reviews.
