A great champion for sure. I still think Hagler beats him. Hagler was shorter but had a 75 inch reach vs. Monzon who had a 76 inch reach. Hagler was too skilled, too athletic, too well conditioned and had a granite chin. The fact he was a switch hitter would also have created issues for Monzon. 1. Hagler 2. Robinson and 3. Monzon.

@@pitbull8625 He sure did. He ducked none of the top middleweights of his era. He beat them all and Valdez would have stood up to the 80’s middleweights no problem.
@@fsrsaa Valdez became middleweight champion when Monzon retired, undisputed no less. He fought some of best fighters of 70s! Look Valdez is ranked as 27 greatest middleweight RJjr is ranked 17. Jyst to give you froth, perception to quality. Valdez was welterweight champion when he moved up to middleweight. Monzon beat him twice. Monzon ended his career on a 11 year undefeated streak 81-0 over that time period and retired as champion. Funny thing about fighting Monzon you were never same fighter afterwards. He literally drain you with his work rate. My two favorite fighters of 80s were Monzon and Salvatore Sanchez who despite his brief career had a more filled resume than any featherweight not named sandy saddler who is greatest feather of all time. Simply by dominating the willow 3/4 fights. I have Sanchez in second spot. He defeated by ko Wilfredo Gomez Azumah Nelson and lil red 2x that Nelson fight would be Nelson’s only loss in next decade. His resume may be brief but filled with so much quality. Duran ein fighter of 70scedging Monzon only Duran lost in 70s Monzon never tasted defeat in 70s like Sanchez Monzon early losses were when he was learning to fight after he became skilled he avenged those three losses. Two of them came when he was recovering from mono which was just a shell of himself in those fights who ever gave him permission to step in ring should have been barred from sport. For those of us who actually seen these fighters fight in Monzon final year he had a open contract only liccata and Valdez were willing to get in ring. Tony liccatta was sn upcoming fighter who really was a good fighter he never recovered after fighting Carlos. He literally was a soul stealer inside the ropes. He simply wear you down. And hammer you in the deep waters of rounds 13-15 just like another brilliant range fighter Salvatore sanchez. These were two of greatest fifteen round technicians sport ever seen. My all time midglecwright rankings 1. Harry greb 2. Carlos Monzon 3. Ray Robinson 4. Dick tiger 5. Marvin hagler 6. Gene Tunney if you have to ask who Tunney is don’t comment on boxing he was man who defeated Jack Dempsey was a great middleweight lt heavy weight and heavy wright who only suffered one loss in his long and distinguished career he should ranked much higher but this is for middleweight rankings only. Ifcyoure wondering why kreb this was Nan Robinson beat gor greatest boxer in history only kreb was was better middleweight. Snd st 163 lbs kreb fought a lot bigger guys once even had a heavywright fight he was out weighed in a lot of fights by 30lbs. The Pittsburgh windmill was the standard every fighter was measured including Robinson. If this was welterweight it be Robinson in a runway Robinson went 99-1 at welterweight. But middleweight rankings are a different animal only Monzon retired as champion in boxings long history of middleweights Monzon never lost title and was undefeated as champion. He was simply the best middleweight. Although I have kreb ranked 1 kreb fought more and defeated hall of famers than any boxer in history of the sport. But I’d take Carlos style Bivol reminds me how how he fight at range but Carlos was sneaky shifty with boxing iq actuslly using the ropes as a weapon to pivot in one direction at last moment as he clock you with the hammer (his straight right) repeatedly always set up by the left jab he had a subtle way of resting the jab on your person Turing you in a particular direction just to meet that fight. He was just a brilliant tactician in the ring. No one could win a decision off him because he plasters that left jab at you all fight long. He famously once said effectiveness with less volumn today it’s called efficiency in accurate punches. Pretty sure his words were lost in translation. another famous quote other great champions lost thier title in ring I never lost as champion going into retirement in 1977 as champion. Even as he was becoming more mortal in 1977 Carlos was still handful for anyone else. He beat a prime venue Brisco as did Valdez Hagler struggled against a faded Brisco a fading Duran and actually lost to Leonard who doesn’t even appear in middleweight rankings. Simply put you need fight at middleweight to earn ranking points at weight class. A great fight would have been between Valdez and Leonard two outstanding welterweight champions! Only Valdez was undisputed in both weight classes.
He fought Hagler when he fought Briscoe. He fought Sugar Ray when he fought Emile Griffith. In fact, Monzon destroyed every welterweight that tried to make the move up so that helps with Hearns and Duran. I would not want to take anything away from the incredibly talented and capable Sugar Ray Robinson, the one man that I think would have brought more skill and discernment as a fighter to the ring. Triple G was Nino and the only other one besides Robinson had to be Mayweather. So somewhere between Robinson, Monzon, and Mayweather, the greatest of all time lies.
Monzon would beat Golovkin. Hagler would be much more difficult because of his southpaw style, which Monzon admitted would be a problem since he only fought one in the amateurs and never in the pros.
For me he is the greatest middel weight ever. The author of this video do not mention that Escopeta had always big problems with the hands, especially the right due to the tifo he had when he was child. If he hadn't had this problem he would have been more terrible
Monzon is the best middleweight ever. Left jab always on target. Always took a step backward after landing a punch. Never got hit on the counter. Monzon was tough as nails.
Smooth fighter he made it look easy other than Emmanuel Griffith questionable win He's from the street of course he going to be streety. He was a natural fighter. An actor who knew how to throw a punch too. He could have made it there too.
IMHO it was his right,he had good reach and really stuck it. It may not seem like he had one punch power because his opponents were looking for it.If he was a pitcher, his fastball would be in the nineties. He could really take a punch as well. His jab was heavy. The top 5 middleweights should include Monzon on the GOAT list.
I definitely think boxers that appeared later on at mw, like Hagler, rjj, James Toney, McClellan, and even Hearns at 160 would dispatch this guy. But there’s no doubt he’s great. Him beating Jose Napoles is very impressive.
Disagree with James Toney and Mcclellan. I can see James Toney beating Carlos Monzon if they fight at Light Heavyweight but Monzon beats Toney at Middleweight. Mcclellan's opposition is worse than even Monzon's. Monzon has never faced anyone bigger than himself like Mcclellan plus Mcclellan is incredibly powerful but there's a huge gap in overall skill and IQ in Monzon's favor here.
Sugar Ray Robinson lost the middleweight title, Marvin Hagler lost the title, Bernard Hopkins lost the title. Monzon retired beating the number one ranked contender at the time, Rodrigo Valdez. Got out on top
Monzon would destroy GGG and Hopkins and I think he beats Hagler by decision in very close fight (Hagler had granite chin, no way that Monzon would knock him out). He could be the greatest of all time at middleweight, but Sugar Ray Robinson and Harry Greb had greater careers overall in my opinion (longevity + both fought in more weight classes against tougher opposition). P.S. He was the favorite boxer of both my father and grandfather.
@@BoxingLife Yes, Hagler would pose very tricky challenge for him with his southpaw stance (I am not sure if Monzon ever fought a southpaw), power in his hands and his incredible chin. Like I said, I think that Monzon would win by decision in very close fight.
A great idea! Because I think he is a bit underrated! It's often the tree big ones Marvin, Lennart and hearns. And then Benn and eubank ? I can't remember when super middleweight was made. But he could easily have been a force there also. But undefeated for 7 years tells it all!
I think it would be very close. I think where Monzon might have issues would be the southpaw stance and switch hitting! But I feel Hagler would struggle with Monzon’s jab and reach (closing the distance). Just got to look at the fights with Emile Griffith who also had a very similar style to Hagler.
Hagler let an old, overweight welterweight, who had never ever fought a single fight at middleweight AND who had only fought ONE fight in the previous FIVE years take him the distance. THAT is an embarrassment to middleweights everywhere. I could care less if anyone thinks that Leonard didn't win the fight. The fact is that he did, but more to the point Hagler let him take him the distance. ONE fight in 5 years, and the guy who's suppose to be a "great" middleweight lets a welterweight with NO middleweight fights take him the distance. Monzon fought a welterweight once, only he wasn't retired for five years, he was the reigning welterweight champion, Jose Napoles. Monzon did exactly what a middleweight is suppose to do when a welterweight thinks he can move up, he beat the daylights out of him and it was over in seven. As I recall I think Monzon had early dinner reservations that night. Larry Merchant nailed it on the head during the middle of the Hagler/Leonard fight when he said "Leonard is winning this fight because he's not losing it". Embarrassing.
Carlos would win "because he punched all his opponents in the ear", thus crushing the "body balance system" and then an easy victory. He never got in trouble for it.
Great fighter no quesiton. His greatest victories for me were really over Rodrigo Valdez. When he defeated Nino Benvejuti Nino was really past his best years. ALso Emilie Griffith was past his best, and in his second match with Griffith, many in the audience booed that decison. He had stopped Griffith in the first fight, In Argentina, and defeated a smaller Jose Napoles If he had decided to try is luck in the light heavy weight division, there was no Super Middle weight title at the time, and defeated Bob Foster, than we could perhaps have a better argument. Perhaps though we can say he was the greatest Argentinian boxer pound for pound.
Monzon takes decision with that jab in your face entire fight. But top middleweight was krebs 2 Monzon 3 Robinson 4 Hagler/ Tunney/, tiger it’s so close. Middleweight deepest divison and tiger has wins over some all time greats. An oft forgotten nsme who one of all time middleweights. My top two are krebs and Monzon. Krebs was first fighter to fight anyone anywhere regardless of color. No champion previously did this . Cost him against tiger he would avenge thatvin another fight he fought all his fights at middleweight whether it fighting for light heavyweights or heavy weights being out twigged by more than sixty pounds on many occasions what makes him special is his mantra anyone anywhere anytime. The Pittsburgh windmill as my uncles said other than Robinson at welterweight finiest fighter he ever seen. I felt that way about Monzon. Simply a larger version of alexis arguello but with more stamina like a Sanchez. He was middleweight champion when I was a teenager Hagler could have had a fight but he kept stumbling with a kiss and draw just as Monzon announced his retirement in 1977. He wasn’t the hagler of the 80s we knew he was still an impatient fighter than and a technical boxer would give him fits even if they were inferior fighters. He really upped his game after that antefermo draw he became much more focused. As Monzon said his favorite fighter to watch. We all progress at our own pace . What was amazing about Monzon he finished on a 11 year undefeated streak 1966-77. 81 fights. To close his career. Never forget his words we all find our pace. You know when to walk away agsinst Valdez he knew it was time. Wasn’t as quick as he normally was he knew it at end of fight announced it was his last. Wish more would walk away like this. His favorite line I’m not a muiltiple chsmpion to be a muiltple champion you have to lose your title. He is only middleweight to retire as champion. And his 7 year consecutive non interrupted reign is longest.
Can't say any middleweight would beat Monzon hands down and if they did it wouldn't be easy. What I can say is that if him and Hopkins fought he may go out of the ring a grab a chair to hit Hopkins with, I doubt he would put up with Bernard's "tactics."
I have him 2nd behind Hagler. Great great fighter... Just a vicious bastard. It is a shame he couldn't keep his violent side in the ring and had to bring it to the outside world too
As there is a lot of debate around Monzon or Hagler...Make sure to check out my analysis on Hagler here: ua-cam.com/video/xnLMUy2ifFs/v-deo.html

So somewhere between Robinson, Monzon, and Mayweather, the greatest of all time lies.
couldnt explain better . cheers
Thanks for this ❤️❤️ it's easy to learning boxing, it's great learning with right knowledge 👍🏻🤩
My pleasure! Glad you could take something from it!
@@BoxingLife yeah definitely it's because of you thanks again 👏👏
Great , great fighter . The best i ever saw .
Monzon would beat Golovkin. Hagler would be much more difficult because of his southpaw style, which Monzon admitted would be a problem since he only fought one in the amateurs and never in the pros.
Great honest assessment! I believe that is correct.
Monzon fought bums. Lost to bums. No comparison

Hagler uno de los mejores sin duda, veo en su estilo a Briscoe, Monzón le ganó al mejor Briscoe, Hagler perdió con un Briscoe ya viejo....
El mejor Carlos Monzón
For me he is the greatest middel weight ever. The author of this video do not mention that Escopeta had always big problems with the hands, especially the right due to the tifo he had when he was child. If he hadn't had this problem he would have been more terrible
So glad I found this page!
Inside the ring he was great.. outside the ring not so much..But you must give him his due as a boxer!
He suffered with rickets in his hands but still fought
Can you please do a breakdown on Gerald The Gman please there are no breakdowns of our fallen warrior 😔
@Bb Breh what
@Bb Mate Monzon literally killed his wife, and yet this video exists. What are you seething about?
A good analysis 👍
Carlos Monzon, GOAT fighter in the middleweight division!
He's the best
Great Fighter. Thanks for pointing out the Vladimir Klitschko similarity.
carlos was and is the best middleweight in the world…
Monzon is the greatest fighter that ever set foot in a ring.
No habrá ningún mediano igual
Monzon is the best middleweight ever. Left jab always on target. Always took a step backward after landing a punch. Never got hit on the counter. Monzon was tough as nails.
It’s funny, at the end You mention Rich the Fight Historian’s video on him..I seen it & thought of it when I clicked yours!
Smooth fighter he made it look easy other than Emmanuel Griffith questionable win
He's from the street of course he going to be streety. He was a natural fighter.
An actor who knew how to throw a punch too. He could have made it there too.
EMILE Griffith
IMHO it was his right,he had good reach and really stuck it. It may not seem like he had one punch power because his opponents were looking for it.If he was a pitcher, his fastball would be in the nineties. He could really take a punch as well. His jab was heavy. The top 5 middleweights should include Monzon on the GOAT list.
Amigo,Monzon fue el 1 absoluto de los medianos,no sabes nada.Solo Ray Sugar Robinson le hubiera traído problemas...
No way to know
I agree... also John Magabi would of beat him!
tommy hearn imo wouldve had no chance against monzon.
Monzon would beat all of them.
Lol hn u reaching hes not beating hagler easily especially not triple easily
I think the fight with Hagler would’ve been fascinating clash of styles. Hard to pick between the two!
He suffered against Briscoe and Valdes , I don’t think he can beat Hagler or Robinson
@@BoxingLife Yes, Hagler would pose very tricky challenge for him with his southpaw stance (I am not sure if Monzon ever fought a southpaw), power in his hands and his incredible chin. Like I said, I think that Monzon would win by decision in very close fight.
Roy Jones Jr. beats them all
A great idea! Because I think he is a bit underrated! It's often the tree big ones Marvin, Lennart and hearns. And then Benn and eubank ? I can't remember when super middleweight was made. But he could easily have been a force there also. But undefeated for 7 years tells it all!
LoL Benn and Eubank weren't in the same class as Hagler and Hearns....
He was undefeated for last 11 years 66-77 and was on a 81 fight undefeated streak when Monzon retired.
He looks like Bruce Lee
He is native American
The Diaz brothers remind me of him
One of the best, no doubt....his private life, well, that is another matter.
Without a doubt for both!
Gracias! 🤜🤛⚔️
Hagler would have been too much for him
I think it would be very close.
Really cool thumbnail you should really do that for these types of vids
Que lástima que no tiene la opción de subtitulos en español
Any chance we could get Prince Naseem Hamid next?
Monzon vs Mayweather
?
Him and hagler. Would have been a masterpiece 😮
Him and Haggler would of been a barn storm
Great video. Thanks
Hey love your videos! I am a boxing channel as well so find this really interesting!
Thank you!
Monzon is a top 10 boxer of all time.
yes , YES The Greatest Middleweight
Carlos would win "because he punched all his opponents in the ear", thus crushing the "body balance system" and then an easy victory. He never got in trouble for it.
I think it’s legal to punch your opponent in the ear.
Monzon te greatest champion .the número ONE MIDDLEWEIGHT HISTORY .
Il miglior peso medio di sempre
Carlos monzon ❤
Great Boxer
So did Monzon or did not Monzon KO Joe Frazier in sparring ?
No bebas amigo...
Monzon looked like Bruce Lee, was relaxed like Homer Simpson, and punched like a shotgun.
Monzon is Native American
Carlos Ortiz
Cleaned up the 160lb division, would have been just too much for Marvelous and a better middleweight than Robinson.
Next please the great counter punching Juan manuel marquez.
He still holds the record for the most undisputed middleweight title defenses. 9, not 14.
haha
He defended his title 14 times in a row, a world record at that time.
@@gedaom, And 9 of them were undisputed. A record that still stands today as the most *undisputed* middleweight title defenses.
I have 1 thing to say, he was a massive middleweight 😂, he looked as big at middleweight as Thomas Hearns did at welterweight...
That’s my grandpas dad
is similar to joe calzague , he never stop hiting the head of hes oponent !!!
Headhunter. I'm critical of fighters like him. What happens if he can't knockout his opponent?
😂😂
Can't say any middleweight would beat Monzon hands down and if they did it wouldn't be easy. What I can say is that if him and Hopkins fought he may go out of the ring a grab a chair to hit Hopkins with, I doubt he would put up with Bernard's "tactics."
I have him 2nd behind Hagler. Great great fighter... Just a vicious bastard. It is a shame he couldn't keep his violent side in the ring and had to bring it to the outside world too
