Forehand Tip: Avoid This Common Mistake

  • Many players lose a lot of power on the forehand because of how they move their non-hitting arm.
    If your non-hitting arm is moving incorrectly throughout the swing, then you lose power and you shorten your hitting zone.

    Nice progression to tweaking his forehand preparation. A lot of rec players suffer from opening too early and losing balance during the shot, this is a wonderful checkpoint for players that feel loss of control while swinging.

    Thank you so MUCH! I'm still struggling with over rotation, my hips being stuck and my shoulders rotating too much with my left arm going down and backwards. On off days my contact zone is ridiculously short and my FH becomes my weakness. I spent thousands euros on lessons and no pro has ever been able to give me the right tip. Then came this video. I feel like it could be the solution. Keep the damn off hand up there forever and then catch the racquet with it. In this way in will naturally go out the way at the right time. I'll get back to you soon, thank you

    Will be more conscious of how I am using my left hand now. Definitely should help keep the stroke going forward a bit longer instead of pulling sideways more. Thanks

    Awesome tips! My left non-dominant hand is usually in the way and gets hit by the racket after the swing.

      Hi Neslie, make sure that you are uncoiling, if you uncoil and leave your left arm there it will naturally move out of the way and even bend as the left shoulder rotates. When you just move down and up the shoulder doesn't rotate and then as a result the left arm gets in the way. Hopefully this makes sense.     Problem is he may catch the racket too early and he loses the rotation. He must engage the shoulders and the best way is to catch racket at the right time.

    He was hitting open stance in the “before” videos and changed to neutral stance in the “after” videos. Would be good to see how he hits the open stance now in a match situation.

    In the match footage he was hitting cross court... and was turning to create the angle especially when he was pulled wide.. after the "fix" he hit all down the line and did not have to open up and bring his right hip forward. He was falling back a bit in the match but was on the move pulled out wide.. So i am not sure about this. Just watched Djokovic slow mo.. he does open up his left shoulder on contact.

    His form on the left handed two handed backhand looked good -- I think Uncle Tony would tell him to become a left handed player.

    Wow... I was actually pulling with my non hitting hand to make my body turn faster thinking that's going to help me.
    I was mishitting some balls but I though that's just me not hitting the ball with the sweet spot of the racket

    At 7:25 you say keep the arm bent. Which arm were you referring? Should he not keep his left arm straight out parallel with the base line? Thanks for the vid.

    All he did was change his follow through.. he wont be able to use his windshield wiper finish.. now how do you fix that I wonder.

    The cause of this issue is actually the left feet, not the left arm itself, right? We can see he improved when he step on his left feet.

    This video does a poor job of explaining the precise function of the non-hitting arm. Any of the great forehands have an explosive uncoiling of the non-hitting side of their bodies so that it clears the way for the hitting side of their bodies to get out and through the ball well. If you look at Federer, Nadal et al they have their shoulders and hips parallel to the net at contact which means they cleared their non-hitting arm/hips aggressively. They do a great job at that moment of controlling their non dominant side so they don't over rotate at contact, but after contact , they allow their non dominant side to come completely through and around so that they can have maximum rotation and range of motion something that was not shown well on this video.
