Picked one of these up from a local nursery! They had some Oregon Grape plants also but I didn't get one. I'm growing the huckleberry bush in a container with fox farms happy frog soil, along with used coffee grounds, bone meal, diatomaceous earth, worm castings, vermiculite, and lawn clippings!!

Pretty much, all plants "grow" in the dark, searching and stretching for the light. When the light is at full force, they are kept shorter, less stretching.

Interesting! Well that makes me hopeful that I can under plant the cherry trees with monkey puzzle and have them become the new canopy over a very long period of time haha.

Great video. We moved from Pacific Grove; where the huckleberries grow everywhere, up to Auburn, in the Sierra Foothills, and have tried growing them without success. We plan to attempt this project again by transplanting another one in a wine barrel in a corner of our property that we can protect it from getting too much direct light during the 90plus degree temperatures of summer. Any ideas for us?

Thanks! Maybe try partially burying some large ish branches in the wine barrel because the prefer growing into rotting logs of conifer species. I agree the partial shade will be good for them.

Hi, just got a vaccinium ovatum today! I've been looking online for anything about leaf behavior in regards to temperature/watering, but haven't found anything yet. Do you know what signs the plant shows if it's being overwatered or malnourished? I want to take very good care of the bush I have. Anything that would help me identify what my plant needs at a given time would be much appreciated. I'm relatively new to gardening, but I'm trying my best.

Welcome! I think the evergreen huckleberry is going to respond like most plants do to water and nutrient stress. The leaves will turn brown and curl when they’re having drought issues and turn various shades when there’s nutrient problems. Keep in mind though that this plant is somewhat drought tolerant and it’s able to handle some stress. The other thing I’ve noticed in the spring is the new growth is red and then later turns dark green. The persimmons kind of show a similar trait. Their new growth is light green and then gets darker over time.
I think the most important thing if you’re new to gardening is do a lot of observing. Check your plant every few days and make mental notes about what it looks like. You’ll eventually get dialed in and will know what it wants. I wish you luck with your new plant!
