This sounds like my problem with Valkyria Chronicles. The levels went from "basic" to "basic with a small mid mission twist" to "the mid mission twist may clothesline you while you're trying to do the basic mission " to "the mission briefing is irrelevant, just play it, see how the level screws you over, and restart with that knowledge in mind". The last mission I played actually gave you an invincible allied unit, and a mission objective to take a camp guarded by a handful of enemies. As soon as you or the ally takes the camp, the ally is removed and two superunits with guards spawn on opposite sides of the map. By far the best way to finish this mission with a decent ranking is to rush to rue unmarked spots on the map and spawn camp the bosses with just the right units.
I absolutely love shozo kagas srpgs. He has a simple but distinct way of writing his stories that I just find so entertaining to me. The art style and music are all just bonus’s to me. I’m on vestaria saga 1 but eventually plan on playing all his games at some point.
What you mention about unique units with cool properties does show up a little bit in Thracia, the first that comes to mind is Olwen with her Dire Thunder, or even someone like the holy weapons in Genealogy. Looks like a very cool game
Love these types of games they are always so much fun to play as I plan how to feed certain party member kills, and I know the pains of having to reset the map because of losing a party member.
