I first experienced Reignac when I bought a bottle of 2001 at Costco (in 2004 or 2005 - I forget) for $19 and change. I was quite blown away by it. So much so that I bought 4 or 5 bottles and gave them to friends with good palates to evaluate. It remains my favorite bottle of red that I've drank. Years later I saw this video and had to grin. Monster coffee and mineral things going on. Got even better sitting in a decanter for 24 hours. The 2 or 3 later vintages I tried were very nice but not quite the same as the 2001. I haven't seen it at Costco lately.
Bordeaux really is one of the world's great regions when it comes to value-driven wines. Lots of hype goes to the big names but there are lots of wonderful brands. The Reignac will go on our to-taste list.

I wished they would have told us the vintages on all of the wines. Were they all 2001's?
This is extremely common and why competitions that use blind taste tests are very close to mathematically random when it comes to who receives the awards. I make enough to regularly drink the top bordeaux vintages and yet my go to wine recently has been a relatively cheap Argentinian melbec.
I'm a Sauternes/Tokaji drinker. Though I stash away Yquems, and other 6 puttonyos Tokaji Aszu and higher, my go to bottles for families and guest are regular Monbazillac/Cadillac/ Loupiac, and Szamarodni. As long as they like it, even $25-35 will be fine.
It´s wierd that no one guessed that Reignac was the Joker. If you are a world champion sommelier for instance you should be able to tell that the wine was propably a much cheaper wine. The tannins, concentration and depth of Reignac 2001 was nowhere near the other wines.
I drank Reignaq 2005 a month ago. That wine will be great within a few years it´s too young now.

I think so too, the 2001 vintage was fine too drink in 09. Many top producers made wine far below what they normally do in 2001 though. Angelus and Ausone did great wines. It´s very suprising that Ausone and Petrus did a lot worse then Reignac. Those wines should have been really open and interesting at the blind tasting.
no, they should not have been open at age 8. Minimum 15, some 25. In fact many think big structure wines are best at release, for about a year, then not again for 20 or so years. They close down and start a slow chemical evolution.

I agree. In fact this is the failing of such a tasting. Those Grand wines are nowhere near drinkability so it is obvious that the simpler, more approachable to drink, will get higher marks. Give these wines 15 to 20 years and I am almost sure that the results will be different.

i know little to nothing about wines, preferring brandy and whiskey, though i do enjoy a glass with meals, but i had no idea that something as prestigious as Chateau Latour, or even a Lafite, could be had at such a reasonable price. i may have to develop a palate for the stuff, if only to save my wallet the burden of of Cognac and Scotch.
Also, i can tell you right now, my oenophile uncle is getting Reignac for chrismas.
Only the very worst vintages can be had at the prices mentioned in this video. So in a way they were set up for failure. Also good luck finding a Petrus for the 1500 mentioned in this vid. A consumer would be lucky to find an average vintage even at 3500€.
How long have the wines been decanting before they tasted them? Some of them were propably too young when they tasted them as well. 15 years is often the perfect age for the most expensive bordeaux wines.
Reignac rules. Sure, the classified ones will overtake it in 10,20,50,150 years... But I want to drink something good while waiting (for ever)... It will be Reignac.

I worked in fine dinning and I had conversations with some very wealthy men about wines. W/ enough money to drink the big 5 all the time. Most told me the Petrus was their least favorite. Surprise though, most of them had the Mouton R as their favorite.
I've tried (just tried) the 5 from some different years and yeah. Expensive and im not buying them but man a 1982 Ch. Margaux makes you think it is worth the money. If I made a good 30K more a year I'd drink 1 of the big 5 a month.
This shows that Petrus and others GC from Bordeaux are not worth more than 15 euros -- at least for these guys tasting...
I've always wanted to try the Reignac and give the Grand Crus a run for their money.
True if you mean drinking them 15 years before they have come into balance in the bottle.
These wines ARE ready for drinking now! They will probably improve over the next 5-10 years, but then they need to!
This is a well-known phenomena. Petrus sells for 1500 euros because people want to pay that much then convince themseleves that it is amazing. I've been very let down by fine wine, and in awe of basic ones. Best white I've ever had =£14 a bottle, best red = £20 : )
Well, this is all very nice, but I would like to see Reignac against Petrus in ... 10 years in the same blind tasting. Nice publicity stunt, but rather bullshit like today. If you are a wine expert, you should know better.
I disagree, cmon. Its a blind tasting, simple. .. Reignac just showed better. I dont think its a stunt just that they may be on to something.
I'm drinking a Chateau Lieujean same price as Reignac haha

Yes. Besides a 200 something dollar of Margaux is either from its worst vintage or something new that already had a -96 pt review by Parker. 209 euro Mouton Rothschild? It must be from the yr with the worst climate possible. So not only some of these guys are full of shit and obviously have money and pretty much buy their way into the main seat of the wine parties. Some of these bottles are from the worst vintages. This is the result of both factors.
Actually a valid point I didn't consider. You cannot have the wines mentioned in this video at these prices (nor were they available in 2009 at such prices) unless they are from the very worst vintages. Even a regular vintage Margaux (neither spectacular nor bad) would have been around $500 during this tasting. Only the Ausone has a realistic price.
i love reignac. 2000, 2001. However, tasting a highly structured wine meant to age for 20 years before drinking, which is essentially all the wines except for Angelus and Cheval Blanc (perhaps 10 years) and Reignac (perhaps 3 years), is completely ridiculous. It is infanticide. It is like drinking scotch out of barrel. Having said that, Reignac was a great value in this time period. Regrettably I haven't had a lot of newer vintages. Perhaps it is still a great value.
As with all wine, it is best to serve each bottle when it has reached its maturity. 99% of the world's wines are meant to be drunk upon release. Not classed Bordeaux.
most of these so called expert tasters are just ....full of b.s. I wonder what qualifies them as expert tasters, lol. When I saw Petrus Ausone get bad marks, I laughed my butt off. Probably would have been better if they tasted wines that were 15-20 years old. Many of these wines are not meant for consumption for 15-20 years. But this was very humorous, lol.
