  • This video shows a drum worker in Bamako, Mali, assembling a Jeli Dundun (Kasonke drum).
This drum is mainly used around the Kayes region of Western Mali by the Kasonke people.
The goat skin is thoroughly softened to help create a warm bass sound. A lightweight wood is used (usually boumou or melina) to help make the drum more wearer friendly. Played usually with a curved or two piece angled stick in one hand and an accompaniment bell struck with a heavy thumb ring on the other.
For any more questions or comments about the jeli doundoun please make a posting. We appreciate your feedback.

Thanks for your interest in the drum making video.
The ring material was made from some ridge plastic tubing that was bought locally in Bamako. it is wrapped with cloth.

What kind of material is that red ring? Is it iron or just rope wrapped in cloth?
