  • Broiler Chicken Manure Fed Black Soldier Fly Larvae - A Self-Sustainable Radical Farming.
This radical approach to poultry farming is using a 3-weeks old Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) that was reared on broiler chicken manure which will then fed back to the chickens as major source of proteins and other essential mineral and amino acid feed supplements.

Great idea BUT, this raises concerns about the potential reintroduction of bacteria, viruses, and parasites that could be present in the chicken manure and subsequently ingested by the larvae, which might then reintroduce these pathogens to the chickens. Shouldn’t the larvae be heat treated to kill off microbes?

I raise meat chickens. They don’t move much. Feed is available 12 hours a day. If you don’t restrict their feed they will eat themselves to death. When I walk into the coop the chickens don’t move. I can reach down and pick them up. Basically all they do is eat, poop and drink. They will lay in their own manure. These are meat chickens. They actually have a pretty good life. They don’t have to worry about predators. If you let these birds free range every hawk, owl, coyote, bobcat will destroy the flock. They can barely walk much less run. They are white and easily seen. They don’t have to scrounge for food as they have room service. If these were egg layers then I’d think it’s a little inhumane to keep them in a small coop.
