A shame far too few people got the amazing post-Weather Report music of the great keyboard wizard and composer Zawinul. An intricate all encompassing world music fusion. Here with Gerald Veasley (b.) and Scott Hendrson (g.).
Playing jazz and being involved in composition made me understand this modal stuff even more. But man, Zawinul's lead keys always bring out the best in a particular solo, like the very first guitar solo here.
Saw them live in 1987 at the Blue Moon theatre inTalahessee, FL. Oops Adderly (Cannibal's dad) was in the audience. It was his 91st birthday. Joe dedicated the song Mercy, Mercy to him. When he stood up to acknowledge Joe, they gave him (Pops) a standing ovation. Joe's version was AMAZING.
08/19/90 - Newport Jazz Festival - The Zawinul Syndicate: Michael Baker - Drums/Vocals, Scott Henderson - Guitar, Bobby Thomas, Jr. - Percussiom/drum set, Gerald Veasley - Bass, Joe Zawinul - Synthesizers.
I preferred the version of Syndicate with Paco Sery and Richard Bona as well as afterwards. This version was just a little on the smooth jazz side, the others were more rooted in West African rhythms and melodies.
Just to play with the maestro had to be a gratifying experience ! I'm sure J Z felt it knew these cats were good enough to play his music. Victoir Bailey played with Urban Knights , Mary J Blige, and lastly Madonna but his musicianship was never compromised. Alex Acura played with Elvis, Diana Ross before Weather Report. I don't care for smooth jazz music because a lot of it is jazzed up RnB. There are many RnB artists I love and grew up playing their music. We didn't want to play anything with the word Blues in the funk generation. Lol.
god bless you michael baker...great drummer and singer..RIP
Gahhhh Scott Henderson's playing always gets me, such a damn great player!
Zawinul Syndicate (Mike Baker dr & Voc, Scott Henderson g, Bobby Thomas, Jr.perc , Gerald Veasley b, and Joe Zawinul).

Eric Beek huh? What the fuck are you talking about? did you not learn how to speak English? Did you get F's in school? Certainly sounds like it.
