Me too, I was blown away when I first heard it, if only because it was the first song I hadn’t heard on Trench when I listened all the way through for the first time.

nicholas bourbaki refers to the bourbaki group, a group of mathematicians who came up with the symbol ø, the empty set. one of the sisters of the members, simone weil, is a french philosopher that has lots of ties to vialism, the key religion in the lore. tyler recently confirmed this at a meet and greet :3c

5:55 in concerts and such, Josh has the sickest drum solo of all time after it says his name - in the Scaled and Icy tour (stands for scaled back and isolated, if you remember that lyric from Redecorate), Josh has a ski mask on until the moment it says Josh Dun and Tyler comes up behind him and rips it off before the drum solo. Highly recommend watching a live performance of this song!
I am not sure, but i think Scaled and Icy doesn't stand for Scaled back and isolated, but it's acronym for Clancy is dead. Correct me if I am wrong
@@filiproztocil4546 it means both. tyler said in an interview the album was about how he felt the world was during covid. scaled back and isolated. but yes it’s also an anagram for clancy is dead, but he’s never said that during the album cycle, it was for us fans to decipher.

this is a very underrated song of theirs and once you dig into the lyrics it's pretty philosophical
this song also gives the full name of Nico as Nicolas Bourbaki
this opens up a whole new can of worms, Nicolas Bourbaki (in real life) was a group of mathematicians in Europe who created the empty set, which is the stylized "∅" in twenty ∅ne pil∅ts - they also created the Dangerous Bend Symbol which is referenced in Overcompensate, it was basically a symbol that group would use in their books to let the readers know there was some confusing content coming (now used on road signs in Europe).... i imagine there will be more on this album that ties that real life group to Nico in the lore

love the grooviness of this track! On their last tour when they performed Morph they played visuals from The Outside music video when Tyler used Ned's antlers to seize control the bishops body so think that is what the lyric 'i'll morph to someone else' is referring to.
I think the chorus is him talking about him thinking about death ('can't stop thinking about if and when i die') and questioning what he thinks will happen afterwards: does he belief in an afterlife ('above is blind belief') or does he think there's no point to life and he may as well give up through suicide ('under is sword to sleeve') or can he escape death in some way ('around is scientific miracle').

I hope you guys caught the meaning to what he's saying in verse 1 and 3. He's talking about death. "Around is scientific miracle, let's pick above and see" whereas Under is Hell/giving up while Above is Heaven/Persistence. It's sooo good.
One of the best songs off Trench imo and maybe the best lyricism from Tyler ever.
Don't forget some live versions like fall away, the judge, tear in my heart, the run and go, and studio version i highly recommend semi-automatic (really underrated song from vessel)

This is one of the songs off Trench that you *really* hear the Paul Meany influence. I hear a lot of early MuteMath in the music. All it's missing is the insane Darren King drum beat, and Paul's vocals.

The production on this song is unmatched
“Different lane to be in”, they have a song called “Lane Boy”, abt staying in “their lane”, -which is all over the place. You can’t peg this band for “one sound” . I *LOVE* this band. Seriously. Banger after banger. I like every single song on every album. Especially from “Vessel” on. But the self title album is great too. And “Regional at Best” shows their massive potential.
You gotta listen to this one live, it hits even harder bc of josh's drum solo after the "josh dun" lyric

I think y’all have to give Mutemath a listen. One of the producers for Trench, SAI and Clancy is Paul Meany. He used to be the signer for Mutemath before they disbanded. Joy Rides and Monument are GREAT songs and you can hear a ton of Mutemath’s style in a lot of Trench and even the three Clancy songs we’ve heard.

I have one recommendation....
PLEASE stop looking at the lyrics and just listen to the music! Feel the music, and whatever needs to speak to you WILL, and will stand out! I strongly believe that reading the lyrics and reading ahead takes away from that organic feeling and natural reaction that you get from listening to a song for the first time. I'm not looking at someone react to a song I'm looking at someone read lyrics and it clearly takes you out of that experience. Not only you, but me as the viewer as well!
