  • Owen's Blog | Scrape Tree Experiment, Last Minute Preparations
    Owen heads down to one of his food plots on his farm in Southern Iowa where he hopes to catch up with a target buck during the upcoming season. He sets up an experimental mock scrape in front of his Redneck blind using branches from a grapevine, oak tree and cedar tree to take inventory of the deer using the area and to catch a glimpse of their preferred type of licking branch. He explains his method of setting up these types of mock scrapes and predicts which type of branch that he believes will attract the most activity.

Even though the past 5 evenings he did come into the field. I had added the post on Oct 1, so it was new that day. Pics showed the the does and fawns like to get on their hind legs and play around with the vine. That's why one of mine broke - the does pulled it down. Just an FYI. Good luck!

    Jeff Sturgis from whitetail habitat solutions convinced me to put up mock scrapes this year using vines, and it worked the first night! Smack dab in the middle of heavy trails. Instead of bucks cruising past the camera, they actually stop and smell it or rub it. Giving myself more pics and a stopping point next to my stand to shoot at. Cheap and easy. Gl this year and let us know what u find on the results!

    I would’ve clipped about a foot or so off of each. ESP the vine. Cedar is king here. They’ll stand on their back legs to lick a cedar if a scrape is present

    • @owenreigler2842
      @owenreigler2842 2 роки тому

      So far the cedar is getting killed, it’s dead even with the vine and oak way ahead of the cedar but there’s still time for the cedar to make a comeback

    • @owenreigler2842
      @owenreigler2842 2 роки тому

      Definitely could’ve clipped the vine but I want all the deer in the herd to be able to reach them but you’re right better to have them a little too high than too low.

  • @catchemalive
    @catchemalive 2 роки тому

    Experiments are the best way to find out new info!!! Can’t wait to see the results but my bet is going for the Oak limb. The vine seemed to be a tad low hanging for their liking unless you trimmed it up afterwards? Either way, can’t wait to see how it works out.

  • @joshbrosmer2260
    @joshbrosmer2260 3 роки тому

    Great idea! I don't think the kind of limb matters as much as the positioning. Apparently you don't have beech trees in Iowa, here in the east I find 10X as many natural scrapes under beech as any other species where beech is common. I suspect that has more to do with them having tough limbs that hold their leaves a long time and that tend to hang at the right height than it does actual preference for the species.

    • @owenreigler2842
      @owenreigler2842 2 роки тому

      Good feedback Josh. You’re right beech trees are very scarce in this area although I’ve been on a couple farms to the north that had quite a few so they’re here just kind of hit and miss I guess.
