Well I consume 50g of birds eye chill and raw garlic on a daily basis so maybe my tolerance to chillies is high

It's not really spicy per se. I really like spicy foods, but raw onion as is does not cause the same effect as capsaicin, instead it just hurts like a chemical burn. Onions contain a bunch of sulphur compounds, which turn into basically sulphuric acid for a little while
