- How to strip your Warhammer miniatures - SAFELY. I talk about different ways to easily strip your Warhammer 40k, age of sigmar, or other wargaming models. Safe to use with plastic, resin or metal, Biostrip 20 is a great product. It's relatively cheap and easy to use, which makes it the ideal product for you.

How do you find stripping miniatures, is this a product you use? I really like it, I don't think it's great for tanks and larger models, but it's perfect for a warband or a few squads. If you liked this video, do check out www.patreon.com/broadswordwargaming and think about supporting the channel, it's hugely appreciated! 😊
Just been using it for a month now in anger - got through most of a 250ml(?) pot. Another 1 l arrived - direct from the company and saved me £4 on the Amazon price. But it's great. Tanks are not an issue for me (Space Hulk is my game of choice)and the largest mini I put through it was an old style plastic Tyranid Warrior. Definitely looking at a large US cleaner and a lot of totally awesome (or equivalent) for vehicles - or maybe painting the stuff on with an old (or maybe new) 1inch paintbrush. I think thats what it's really for.
A cheap sonicare toothbrush is a very useful addition to any "stripping" toolkit.
Remember to swap heads if you also use it on your teeth.
You don't want to get bits of food on your minis.
Just used this method on a starwars legion model and I can’t believe how perfectly it worked out!!! Thank you for sharing this method, I 100% recommend this for all future use!
I've been using the Paint Blitzer and it's my favourite solution so far
I just used this for the first time today after watching your video. Works brilliantly, thanks!
Stellar and simple. Really cool. i was looking at a sonic cleaner and LA awesome. This seems much better for me.
Testors Easy Lift Off is super fast and doesn't attack glues in the same way.
nice review man, been thinking about trying this stuff
Thanks buddy. 😀
I use isopropyl alcohol, I like building PCs so have it lying around. I used it on all my BFG models.
i use that too, it work great
Good vid! Thx! I think I'll try this! I've been using green stuff but it doesn't do a great job, this looks so much better!
This really is my favourite way to strip models.😀
Nice and simple! Great video dude
Thanks man!
Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Thanks 🙏 for this it really helped
You're welcome, glad you found it useful. 😀
Great stuff, really recommend it, have a pot or two around the house at all times.
Nice. It is handy, just to dunk and be done. 😀
Thank you Broadsword Wargaming .
Worked amazingly on AOS plastic models. Took all the Citadel paint layers off in 3 hours and most of the primer. A thick black primer took a second dunk for another hour and some scrubbing to get it off the recessed areas. 2 or 3 skulls and ornaments that were stuck onto the side of the figures game unglued with the toothbrush scrubbing. But it depends how rough you are.
I then gave the models a good rinse under a tap while brushing the stripper product off, which is like thick gloop that clings on to everything and then I used kitchen roll to dry them, a surprising amount of the primer came off while wiping the model dry.
Overall I’m pleased that it easily removed the paint layers simply by dunking and leaving it for 3 hours.
It’s probably worth wearing gloves as my hands felt dried out in just a few minutes.
if your basing is glued with PVA, soak the models in water and brush all the basing away before you strip. it keeps your stripping solution cleaner
Perfect for stripping models. I did use the leftovers to try stripping a flyer and it sort of worked, though not as effective as on the individual models.
Hey just a heads up I've used the spray bottle version of Biostrip 20 and it definitely DOES damage the models, it literally dissolves them into featureless blobs, definitely be careful with the spray version.
there will be a solvent in the sray bottle to allow it to "spray" so that is probably what damaged the plastics
Try dish soap water. Fairy in particular to wash off the paint remover. Then after that use only water.
Soap in general breaks of the water’s surface tension an makes it far easier for washing off such chemicals than plain water ;)
Good thinking, and a handy tip, thanks. 😀
Hmm i used this stuff on some old 2nd ed Terminators and it made the plastic very brittle and cracked. I guess it was because the plastic formula has changed since the 90's though, im sure your method will work on the newer plastics, just putting my point across.
Thanks Olly :)
Thanks
have you tried testors paint remover. I keep reusing it though it is expensive to buy the first time it strips testors enamel paint it also works with the new acrylic paints readily. Just a tip its not as harsh to the plastics
Thanks for posting. I’m interested to try this stuff in an ultrasonic bath to see if it replaces the scrubbing and reduces splash and eye damage risk. It may or may not work.
Sadly, as with all “how to” videos, the comments section has filled up with “I just do this” or “all you need to do is this” whatabouters. I wish those keyboard warriors would go to the trouble of filming their methods and posting links so we could actually compare efficacy against you, the person who has actually gone to the trouble of testing/filming/posting, instead of just counter-commenting.
Just recently came to the same conclusion - biostrip - just about unbeatable. Wish I had known before I bought degreaser, IPA and a sonic cleaner but hey experience costs! Thanks for the confirmation!!!
Exactly, we learn from experiences 😀. I just found the whole sonic cleaner business a bit of a pain, admittedly, it was quite effective.. but i'm a sucker for "pre made" products. Glad you're liking this stuff too.
And don't worry, sonic cleaners are handy for other things, so I'm sure you'll find a use for it. 😀
@@BroadswordWargaming I used to use cellulose paint thinner for metal models and it was great - would remove skin too if you didnt get it cleaned offin a hurry but with my move to plastic this is the business. I enjoy your channel and content - keep it coming. Best regards from Northern Ireland
This stuff is great. I've even used it to clean my crappy brushes before.
I hadn't thought about trying that, it worked well?
@@BroadswordWargaming it did actually. I just made sure I rinsed it out thoroughly.
I wish we could get Biostrip here in the US. It looks like it works really well.
Use LA’s Totally Awesome instead of US based. About 12-24 hours soak and you’re good to go. Plus, it’s super cheap.
@@hobbithubby5076 I have models that've been sitting in LA's since December, and the primer still won't come off. I don't know why it's not working.
@@awesomejosh94 What primer did you use? Typically after 24 hours you can get to bare plastic under running water with light pressure from a toothbrush.
@@hobbithubby5076 citadel's primers. Interestingly enough, my brother had models in the same container with my models, and they cleaned up just fine.
Simple Green works wonders.
I feel like a waterpik tooth cleaner would work great here
Personally Ollie I prefer using Dettol , not only is it faster but its quicker but thanks for sharing.
which dettol the orange one?
Fast but quicker. Wow man. That's a combo. But Dettol leaves gunge
Absolutely reeks though
@@MrUnreal9111 yeah, the brown stuff does the job but it's smelly.
Can't say I like the brown dettol at all, it's so good and takes a while. We all have different things we like, but this is a really good product. 😀
You left some Bio-Strip at my house and I've used it to totally ruin some forgeworld resin! :)
Tis a gift.
Well, I finally ordered one, after MS Paints recommended it about a year ago (I've only just started getting stuff out of storage) ... I have a sonic cleaner and it's amazing for metal... what's strange is it almost doesn't touch my plastic kits, to the point where I have a metal model with plastic arms and the body is bright silver, but the arms are still completely painted... Luckily the sonic cleaner also zaps the glue so at least they come apart nicely.... My biostrip 20 is arriving tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to see if it does the job on plastics. I have an entire army I need to repaint and they don't make half those models anymore, so I really need to strip down a huge pile... :D
Wish me luck!
Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch... I was expecting it to be 'a bit more effective' than all the other processes, but this stuff is like the Anti-Paint... If anyone out there is considering it, I give this product a double thumbs up.
Super clean is awesome when you want it to attack the super glue and strip the mini aswell. But holy damn that stuff looks like it works even better honestly
Handy tip for anyone wanting to do tanks or big miniatures.
Coat miniature completely.
Wrap in cling film this speed's up process and helps doing larger miniatures.
Hope this helps someone
IPA will breakdown biostrip in those hard to reach areas
Ooo must give this a pop!
@@BroadswordWargaming I used 99% cause biostrip turned into a huge gummy mess after brushing and water did basically nothing 🤣
Bought a tub off of this video, works great and no smell like the Brown Dettol
Ah brilliant! Yea, it's also less goopy to work with!
I use isopropanol personally. Great for plastic and metal. Sadly it destroys resin!
That's why I like this, it works on everything. 😀
is that true?? i always use ISO but somehow never tried it on resin before. Would have assumed it was safe
@@xbogx it's not true only.if you.leave it for days but really effective if you do lots if short dips and cleans
Been meaning to get a can of this, but seems impossible to get outside the UK. :'(
😪
Hi, do you know whether this would work for stripping non water based paints such as Vallejo metallic gold that has been air brushed on? Cheers.
Will this remove say,Army pInter areasol primers?
Dettol antiseptic is fantastic and probably cheaper...
I tried to strip a Lucius the Eternal model and forgot there are soo many recesses cus or his armour with faces on them
Hi, I’ve been using this stuff for a while now and have found that if you leave the model in the bowl of water for a few hours (I leave it overnight) all the chemical dissolves so there’s no need to scrub it again.
Oh, interesting! I'll defo give that a go. Thanks! 😀
Would this work on Mantic Games miniatures, specifically their hard plastic miniatures?
I used Dettol to striped mine, took 1-2 hours before I start adding soap and scrub. Pretty good stripper, but can be expensive to use solely for striping paints tho.
I have never been a fan of dettol, it was really messy (I used the brown stuff), and I didn't trust my resin models in it. 🤔
This is nice and clean (relatively). There are tonnes of ways though 😀
@@BroadswordWargaming I used the translucent orange liquid ones, other than the antiseptic smell, it works alright I guess. Hadn't found any paint stripper _Yet_ , but I'll definitely use an alternative if I find them. This looks good too.
I'd probably add that you'd want to be wearing some form of eye protection if your scrubbing something with chemicals on as it can flick bits as you scrub.
So I use bio strip but I do things slightly differently. I leave it for at least one day, take the model out and drop it in to a jam jar half full of water. Then, old electric toothbrush, submerge model and brush head in the water. Water stops the gunk from flying everywhere and the electric toothbrush works magic. I can show photos of the output.
Would this work if models have been varnished?
water-based turps is the stuff you want
I just got into miniatures painting and used dish soap warm water and an old soft/medium toothbrush to remove the paints I had previously used.
I am using Apple Barrel craft paints and Floor wax as a sealant, so yes there was a little work involved in stripping 5 Marvel Crisis Protocol sculptures, though it took less than 30 minutes in total.
I get a lot of my models from the troll trader or ebay and i use alcohol to steip plastic minis. It works well. But it stinks...bad. 🤣
So I'm going to try this next time. Thank you.
Any additional tips or advice for drying the models after the biostrip has been removed?
Nothing major, get some tissue and leave them out to dry. I'd be dubious on using it on something hollow though, that was tough. Leaky Dreadnought arms are not what you want, so maybe fill the holes first. 😀
@@BroadswordWargaming excellent thank you much appreciated
Is it okay to leave in the miniatures for two days?
I used methylated spirit on a space marine lieutenant and it warped and misshaped the miniature. I’m going to try this but the only thing I’m worried about is ruining my miniature
Has anyone tried this on Privateer Press plastic? I've got a load of Warmachine and Hordes stuff that needs to be stripped.
Speaking as somebody who wants to retch at the smell of Dettol, can highly recommend this stuff. Completely odourless and you can just dunk your minis in at bedtime and the paint comes off so easy after breakfast.
Yes! 💪
I'm having a hell of a time getting purple army painter primer off some models... any tips??
This should really work. A good scrub. Sometimes varnished models are a little tougher to get the paint off of.
@Broadsword Wargaming I can't find this stuff in North America sadly. Must be a British product.
Where do you pick this up in Ireland?
Element Games.
Biostrip is awesome
Yeah, love it, just because its easy.
Im here a year later and i just wanted to make sure, is this still your recomendation for stripping models? im starting necrons and not 100% on the color scheme, this would be no problem if i wanted to strip them right?
This is still my go to! I need a new tub though, as mine has finally run out. 😀
@@BroadswordWargaming awesome, thank you
@@BroadswordWargaming hi im here again and just wanted to ask, will this work with contrast paint aswell?
Anybody tried biostrip on forgeworld resin?
Wickes and Wilkos own brand and B&Qs Dial Paint Stripper are the same thing, plus you'll get 3 times as much for the price you paid for 250ml of Bio. The 5ltr of Dial works out the cheapest per litre.
Could have sworn I'd already commented on this video, hey ho
Will this remove enamel paints from plastic or resin models.
You know, I've not tried using this after enamels. 🤔
was that the Yedharo model Ciara painted on a stream?
Yes it was, good spot! She wasn't happy with it, os fancied another go. 😀
@@BroadswordWargaming i have the habit never looking back on old models. done is done. not sure if that's good or bad...
@@turtleandbear1179 It's good I think *looks at like of shame* haha. I guess if it's individual models, its alright, but armies.. 🤔
Don’t forget to like and comment to appease the almighty algorithm 👍🏻
I can't find it on Amazon and I can't find it on Google where can I buy biostrip 20?
This is probably 5 months too late, but if anyone has the same question you can buy it direct from the manufacturer online and they’ll deliver it to you. I think it’s made by a company called Fuze products
I've just ordered some Biostrip for my Tiger Tanks, Can't wait, I live in a small space and methylated spirits and Dettol stink and make my living space unbearable
Thanks for the tutorial. Just one question if you don;t mind: you don;t go into any detail about they types of paints this stripper works best on (or does it work on all)? i.e. were your sample minis painted in acrylics, enamels, oils, varnish, etc? Any clarification would be appreciated - many thanks.
The only thing to bear in mind is that you need to wear gloves, as it makes your fingers super smooth and leave them unable to pick up anything!
Well said.
Does anyone know if Biostrip will remove enamel paint?
(Much) younger me didn’t know any better and just used what was at hand...
I don’t know if Biostrip does, but brown Dettol strips enamel. Lot of people complain about Dettol and the gunk. They aren’t using it correctly. Reply if you want to know how I use it.
@@peterdickinson4599 yes please. Would like to know how you go about stripping enamel paint.
@@Nuz_uk Hello. The core message is that when it comes to stripping with Dettol - water is the enemy! You want to go from 100% Dettol, to 100% liquid soap, and then wash off the soap with water. Because Dettol, plus stripped paint, plus water, equals hideous gunk. So pop off down to the local pound store and get yourself some toothbrushes, some tight marigolds, and some eye-protection. Put your minis in a sealable glass or plastic container and pour in neat brown Dettol until they are covered. A see-through container is best. After some time give them a swirl to see how well the paint is coming off. After 12 or 24 hours take them out and over a sink use one of your DRY brushes and start to scrub them. Use Dettol to clean them off. Place the scrubbed minis on some kitchen towel. Dab off excess fluid. Get them as towel-dry as possible. Are they stripped? If not; then back into the neat Dettol and repeat. If yes; then get one of your other brushes and submerge them in liquid soap and scrub clean. Only when you are happy they are clean should you wash off in running water. I have encountered some problems with very old glues turning to slime and have invested in Elbow Grease (UK) spray (active ingredient Limonene). This stuff will strip acrylic paint by itself or clean mould releaser from sprues. Very good as an extra step after the liquid soap. When done, dry completely before priming again. The mini should feel clean to the touch. No friction. No tackiness. Dettol works on metal, plastic, and resin minis. Strips acrylics, enamels, varnishes, and spray primers (though some black primers stain into the plastic). Does not (usually) affect any glues. Keep a cocktail stick handy to clean out deep crevices during the Dettol step. And support delicate sections when scrubbing. That’s it. Good luck.
@@peterdickinson4599 you Sir are a Star. Thank you for your comprehensive instructions. I’ve got some Rogue Trader metal minis that will be getting this treatment. Thanks again. 😁👍
Does this strip primer?
Yeah! It does. I still use this now. :)
I have this stuff arriving tomorrow. Can you just put it on with a paintbrush and leave it for do its thing so you can get more out of the pot?
Yeah, you definitely could. I'd be inclined to always use a toothbrush, just to get it into the cracks and work it. 😀
@@BroadswordWargaming do you think that it could be used to rescue brushes? Leave some on and wash it off?
@@malyxxplays7949 I've not done it, but someone else commented that it works a treat. 😀 give it a go ona crap brush and see. It works on painting/cutting matts. 🤔
