A quick way to fix any stuttering in VII Remake: Set the game to 60fps and the deck to 30. It forces the DRS into action, admittedly below 720p in some areas, but fixes all bad lock ups, especially in the slums after the reactor. If you still get stutters, lower the NPC count, but you shouldn't need to unless you're flying the camera around trying to break it. It doesn't fix the inherent stutters the game has, but you'll get a locked 30.
Does Steam Deck allow for the installation of mods from sites like Nexus Mods? Because I had major stuttering issues playing FFVII Remake on my gaming laptop until I installed a performance mod from Nexus that disables Dynamic Resolution which was what was causing the stutters in the first place. Now it runs fine.

very informative, thanks! i wanted the deck first to play all the old final fantasy and especially to catch up on FF15 cause my old pc can't run it properly, so this video helped me a lot ♥
I will note that Stranger of Paradise not running is likely a RAM issue Team ninja for some reason decided to make a bat with 3 times the tris of Kiriyu (Aka the models are BIG, like >100mb big for a number of them with no textures, just raw geometry) So that is likely the reason why it's so weirdly hard to run and runs at such a low res on Consoles and why even a 3090 can drop to 8fps in some scenes (and why turning off Astos' hair in that specific scene fixes it)
It's running fine on my Steam Deck. Just have to do another launch command with GE-Proton 7.10. But yeah, overall the game has stability issues both on it and PC. ua-cam.com/video/aRHWGl1IQaY/v-deo.html
This is another reason why I wanted a steam deck. Considering it's going to be awhile before I get the PC I want, there are a few non playstation games on Steam I want. Final Fantasy XI I've never played and even though I still have my Vita, it would be nice to have a portable device were I can play every FF game on it. Granted I do still plan on getting a Switch (for certain games like Chocobo GP, Smash Bros, etc), but that's more for some nolsagia than my pure love for FF lol.

Steam Deck is such an ergonomic wonder.. it somehow makes devices like the PSP and switch look microscopic.. but in a really bad way.. everything is all nice and spaced correctly and the trackpads are excellent. Got this great clicky mouse wheel feel.. and you can even make them into overlay menus so you can hot select between a bunch of onscreen buttons.. like choosing a bunch of different spells in an MMO is just a flick of the trackpads away! Don't miss using a mouse one bit with the thumb trackpads! The raised and symmetrical joysticks actually feel better than an Xbox controller, plus you can customize them and use the gyro if you want by touching them. The backpadles (or any button or control surfaces) can be remapped to be hot button combos, makes it so much easier to summon a horse in Elden Ring lol

I'm SO, SO glad you made this video, at the beginning of this year I was conflicted between buying a PS5 or the Steam deck, and essentially it was a bet on which one of these consoles would be able to play the most titles smoothly, with the addition that on PS5 I would be able to play new FFXVI at launch rather than waiting almost 2 years like I'm doing now waiting for FFVIIR to come on steam. On the other hand, PS5 has the issue of backward compatibility and its sketchy attempt at it through game streaming and paywall, as I understood I would have to pay a monthly sub to enjoy PS1 and PS2 games emulation, while PS3 games are available only through streaming. I decided for the steam deck, hoping the pixel remaster collection will be supported, and FFVIIR gets patched after coming to the steam store, and so far it seems like I made the right choice, we'll see how the situation will evolve once it arrives in Q3. It's a bit of a pity that FFXIII doesn't work very well on the deck and in general is a shitty PC port, luckily I still have my PS3 with it and all the PS1 titles (FF-FFIX), but I wish I'll be able to play it on my deck by the time the PS3 will eventually kick the bucket.

Admittedly I'm not the most knowledgeable on ffxi addons but I believe that ashita fares better on linux and so you'll probably see more success. You may need wine for it as I'm not sure if proton will allow it. Anyone that knows better than me, feel free to correct me!

Holy crap the PS Vita looks absolutely tiny as you transition from Steam Deck to PS Vita @ 0:20 . lol :D. I have my PS Vita here in my hand right now , just shows me how freaking huge the Steam deck is in comparison.
It's sad that Square enix never fixed the steam versions of the FF13 trilogy for literally no reason, there are better versions on the windows store but they decided to not fix the steam versions... at least the backlash made square to fix nier automata but they only act when there is backlash not to deliver a good PC port out of the gate :/
This thing is a more comprehensive Final Fantasy machine than the Switch, oh my god …Though, that’s in no small part because Squeenix doesn’t want to bring Pixel Remaster to the Switch for some fucking reason, but still, you get my point
Was playing GBA ff6 (sound and colour restored version) on my hardware. Got up to fighting the martial arts boss in the mountains with this pixel remaster, Going to now play FF6 on steam deck instead. 👌 Thank you for the video. Seems like it runs fine based on your video. Will purchase it.
Heya AB: Was wondering if you'll do an update of this video in the next few months as a "1-year later" type thing. My friend was asking about how FF titles played on steam deck but when I went to grab the link for this, I realized it's now 10 months old, but I told my friend it's probably still a good guide atm.
Yup! I've been planning on this for awhile and now that I've finished the main series marathon, I'll be doing more of a deeper dive into the performance of each one so be on the look out soon!
I'm still awaiting my Steam Deck slated as the 3rd quarter. I was wondering have you tried any of the Trails in the Sky trilogy?, when I've checked to see if they are verified, the first 2 are listed as unsupported, with no mention for the 3rd game.
Great video! I've got a homebrewed vita with FF1-10 and I'm looking forward to my Q2 Steam Deck for playing the 3D FF's. XIV will definitely be fun, will be exciting to creating a new HUD for the 800p screen. One thing: I wouldn't say XIV is "incredibly well optimised" overall. Runs well mainly because its an old game/engine on modern hardware (made purposefully lightweight directly from the issues of 1.0), but the multicore CPU utilisation of the engine is pretty horrible. Whenever you hit an area with like 25+ players rendered, one CPU core gets hammered and eventually pinned to 100%, limiting FPS soley on single core frequency/IPC. Doesn't matter since all important gameplay is in 8 player tiny instanced zones, but just kinda annoying. At least there's no stuttering! (From a long time player with top end specs who still gets dropped to near 60fps in Limsa 😭). Just hoping that they'll actually parallelise the character rendering part of the engine so the load is split more evenly. The 7.0 graphics update is probably the best chance for this...
@Autobalance Sadly quite a common issue with popular MMOs in general, WoW is largely similar. I just want a consistent experience 😖. But yeah again, it doesn't actually matter for high end or competitive gameplay (outside of large PvP modes). They'd be better off fixing the silly double animation lock netcode stuff that prevents smooth high ping gameplay and weaving of oGCDs for that.
Final Fantasy IV 3D Remake not working properly is a deal breaker for me. Was ready to buy a Steam Deck primarily for that title. In addition to the music not loading, it also looks like it is running at half speed in your video.
for strangers of paradise: In SteamOS, set the launcher’s property compatibility to Proton-GE 7.10 and set the launch command to: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="amd_ags_x64=b" %command%
I played 13 on game pass, it's the same thing if not worse because they don't allow for exclusive full screen so I have to quit in the beginning because it refused to play in the settings I wanted. Horrible stuttering and screen tearing regardless of settings
IIRC it was around 500GB of storage and that includes Stranger of Paradise and FFVIIR as both are about 70 GB and 100 GB respectively. However I have since deleted the FFXIII Trilogy (because I have gamepass), Stranger of Paradise (because it works on my PC anyway), and Type-0 (because I've already finished it lol) and I've used about 300 GB of space.
@@Autobalance Thanks for the quick reply. I too have the XIII game pass versions, but it'll be nice to have an SD card with all the FFs on it. Hopefully Game Pass comes soon 'cos they're miles better like you said in the vid.

interesting to see 11 works on steam deck. wonder if non steam also possible as well. sucks about windower, but what about ashita?
Admittedly I'm not the most knowledgeable on ffxi addons but I believe that ashita fares better on linux and so you'll probably see more success. You may need wine for it as I'm not sure if proton will allow it. Anyone that knows better than me, feel free to correct me!
@@Autobalance only have bare experience with wine, but that was back around 10+ years ago. no idea about proton. still... interesting if could get me hand on deck meself. ;)
amazingggg video man
Holy crap the PS Vita looks absolutely tiny as you transition from Steam Deck to PS Vita @ 0:20 . lol :D. I have my PS Vita here in my hand right now , just shows me how freaking huge the Steam deck is in comparison.
This is some very high quality video and format, I wish you great success!
And here’s me getting super excited I just bought ff3 and ff4 for my 3ds xl.
But can it run Final Fantasy Mystic Quest?
Oh goddamn it haha When I get home, I’m going to get it on the steam deck!
As 14 is my main game, I'd love to see a dedicated 14 vid.
Hell yeah brother, xi and xiv represent
This thing is a more comprehensive Final Fantasy machine than the Switch, oh my god
…Though, that’s in no small part because Squeenix doesn’t want to bring Pixel Remaster to the Switch for some fucking reason, but still, you get my point
great video, thanks!
FF7: Not true, the Steam version is based on the old PC port, but it is not a direct port
Can you still install mods on these? I know it runs steam OS but is there a way to still access the files?
Heya AB: Was wondering if you'll do an update of this video in the next few months as a "1-year later" type thing. My friend was asking about how FF titles played on steam deck but when I went to grab the link for this, I realized it's now 10 months old, but I told my friend it's probably still a good guide atm.
Yup! I've been planning on this for awhile and now that I've finished the main series marathon, I'll be doing more of a deeper dive into the performance of each one so be on the look out soon!
@@Autobalance Oh nice, definitely will keep an eye out o7
Damn I wanted the steam deck for Xiv looks like I won’t regret it!
Does anyone know if the Moguri mod for FFIX works with the steam deck?
Ahh, I had no idea but it does make sense! Thank you for the insight!
@Autobalance Sadly quite a common issue with popular MMOs in general, WoW is largely similar. I just want a consistent experience 😖.
But yeah again, it doesn't actually matter for high end or competitive gameplay (outside of large PvP modes). They'd be better off fixing the silly double animation lock netcode stuff that prevents smooth high ping gameplay and weaving of oGCDs for that.
steam deck not avaible for purchase on steam app in australia kinda sucks
Final Fantasy IV 3D Remake not working properly is a deal breaker for me. Was ready to buy a Steam Deck primarily for that title. In addition to the music not loading, it also looks like it is running at half speed in your video.
Thanks for this man
was playing ff14 on vita remote play 10 years ago
FF14/15 on steamdeck I wonder.. can you like bake an egg on the steamdeck at the same time?
Thanks for the FF IV tip.
for strangers of paradise: In SteamOS, set the launcher’s property compatibility to Proton-GE 7.10 and set the launch command to: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="amd_ags_x64=b" %command%
This is incredible.
You can always run 7,8 and 9 on emulation for a lot less issues.
Have you tried 7 or 9 w mods on the steam deck?
I played 13 on game pass, it's the same thing if not worse because they don't allow for exclusive full screen so I have to quit in the beginning because it refused to play in the settings I wanted.
Horrible stuttering and screen tearing regardless of settings
What's the total install size? The only ones I've not tried yet are 14, Lighting Ret and 15.
Hopefully Game Pass comes soon 'cos they're miles better like you said in the vid.
can you edit the save file to by pass the mini game like on windows? Thanks
FFXI thanks for the install tip!
can you add mods on steam deck ?
cant wait to do my raid lockouts on the toilet
You forgot about 2 Final Fantasy games games that are on Steam:
DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY NT (I know its a fighter but it's still a Final Fantasy game)
MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY (I know its no longer available on steam)
Final Fantasy is the reason I wanted the steam deck
Lock the PPSSPP to 30 FPS and the stuttering will go away. That is what I found with a lot of my games on laptop anyway.
FF12 is a game I never thought I'd see on handheld. The Steamdeck is something else 👀
