  • First light and thoughts on the Orion Optics CT10. 10" Ultra Newtonian.
    My first thoughts and overview of the Orion Optics UK CT10 scope and a first light on the PACMAN Nebula
    Set up my new scope with an EAF, filterwheel, OAG and ZWO 294mm pro and took my first light on NGC281 Pacman Nebula. I managed 8.5 hrs of 5 min subs of narrowband SHO.
    Processed the image in Pixinsight and I think the results are great.
    The OOUK scopes come with a Zygo wavefront analysis report which is a really nice touch and makes you feel you have bought something special.

    Gotta love those outtakes Glenn always love it when you're looking into the camera and the mind goes blank. Looks like a real nice piece of gear. What you said reminds me of my Uncle's in the UK who restore vintage British bikes/cars. Hi John and congrats. I love mine and is in permanent use. I recently got hold of the Starizona Nexus coma corrector. Not cheap but wow. With it the CT10 is 900mm and a really quick F3.6. Really pulls in the light and detail. Only consideration is at the faster speed some filters can halo due to filter shift. My Antlia Sii can’t handle that speed. I have a 3nm SHO set from Altair and they are fine so there are filters that are unaffected. Anyways best of luck and thank you for watching

    The dew heaters I put on mine are Kendrick, primary and secondary, on the back of the mirrors. You don't need a dew shield (believe me), that will unnecessarily extend the length of the tube. If you want to offset the balance I'd just add a weight near the focuser, maybe add a sleeve inside the tube near the secondary. Anyway, great to see you are so pleased with your new scope.
    John at Orion Optics has always been a pleasure to deal with.
    Looking forward to some more beautiful images.

      Hi Jon. Thank you for the advice. The dew shield was just a thought and it would have been very short but I wasn't definite on one. I am moving my pegasus powerbox to the scope which will help give me a little more weight to play about with. The optics are so nice on this, I really noticed a much higher contrast to my subs. love it

      Hi Richard and thank you. I think the good thing about Newtonians is you get a lot of scope for your money. They have negatives though, if you don't have an observatory and permanent set up they are large and can be heavy, they catch the wind easily. But I like them and my new one is blowing me away with the images it is giving me.

    Good video and getting better (not sure about the 'Astrobackyard' music over you talking, was a bit distracting). Interesting to see how the inbuilt heating works - warm air currents and all that. Assumed fans were the way to go, however then you end up with light leaks (urban environment), vibration and more air current issues (there are a few threads on pushing vs pulling and different effects). Pacman is a stunner, did it last year with my 200PDS at 908mm so similar result.

    • @Astrobloke
      @Astrobloke  3 роки тому

      Thank you Phil. Its difficult when trying to be creative to get the right balance. Some like the music some hate it, Some want it louder, some don't like the choice etc etc.
      I wouldn't use the fans while imaging because of possible vibrations but they seem very quiet and smooth. I would just use them after a hot day to help cool the mirror before use. Not noticed any heat causing issues but they don't get that hot, just warm enough to prevent dew forming. I have it plugged into a pegasus powerbox advance which has a temp and humidity sensor and only applies enough power to the heaters that's needed.
      Is your pacman on show anywhere? would love to see it

    • @philleng480
      @philleng480 3 роки тому +1

      Ah, fans for cool down on the bigger otas like yours of course I can see that. At 200mm and permanently outside its not an issue, just dew and icing on the primary (which apparently doesn't happen, could have fooled me!).

    • @Astrobloke
      @Astrobloke  3 роки тому +1

      Mine is permanently outside too so i doubt the fans are needed or will get used. They do cause light leaks so I am going to cover them. Never had ice but when its bad dew has formed on the primary of my 130pds. I have a dew tape now on the bottom and its stops that. Having that feature built into the scope was a nice neat option.

    I managed to pick up a used CT8 this week which I can't wait to get up and running. I've already discovered the third axis balance issue and I'm amazed how sensitive it is (my 200 PDS had no problems there). I just wondered if you have ever felt the need to put a mask on the primary mirror? The clips look huge on mine and a mask improved the 200 PDS 100%. Cheers. Mark

      Hi Mark. Congrats on your purchase, lovely scope. It took me a little while to balance but once done its sorted. I know what you mean by the size of the clips. They have never caused an issue with the CT10 I have but thats a big old mirror i suppose you will have to see what it does with which camera you use. Fitting a mask on top of the clips is pretty simple and could get you one printed if you don’t have access to a 3d printer. Look forward to seeing your captures

    Nice scope. One thing that genuinely surprised me though is that OO are still using the same spider that they used in the GX250 (which i have) that is almost 30 years old and i didn't particularly rate it as a good spider in the GX250 let alone a scope that costs about 2 grand. Hi late comment. I got a CT8 and have same issue re focusing.
    With Skywatcher aplanatic corrector (the long one) I am unable to focus as the focuser is racked right in and still out of focus with 55mm backspace.
    This is the first telescope out of many that I have this issue. This is totally is naff if you ask me. The last thing you want to do with a brand new scope is start fixing it.
    I noticed that TS-Optics do Newts with an Orion UK main mirror. This has TS-Optics carbon tube and Ts-Optics mechanics (focuser, mirror holder, spider etc). I suspect this one actually works unlike the OO built one !
    The TS one has 2 positions for locating the primary mirror up the tube (AP or Visual use) rather than having an extending focuser.
    I would have got one of those if I had know before.
    Has anyone tried one of these ?

    • @NckBrktt
      @NckBrktt 8 місяців тому

      Ok, correction to my comment. It does focus with a 1x corrector.
      The focuser tube had rotated inside the visual extension when fitting the optical train in the dark and the lock screw jammed against the focuser body when focused right in. Only just makes focus. May need a better solution for photography.
      I guess Glen you were talking about the 0.7x SW corrector.

    • @Astrobloke
      @Astrobloke  8 місяців тому

      Hi, sorry for delay in replying. The focuser is quite different from the ones used on Sky-watcher in that they don't have the same amount of travel and are low level. Advantages are that the focuser does not intrude into the scope and effect the stars by covering part of the mirror. Obviously the disadvantage is that not all coma correctors will work and achieve focus easily. Speaking to OOUK they do not make a CC for their scopes as they say they are not needed. I have images without a CC and can confirm you can easily get away without one but to get the reduction qualities one would be needed. The Baader MPCC works well but again this is a x1 CC.
      I made a mod to my Sky-Watcher x0.7CC by lathing off the retention ring so it can insert further into the focus tube. I have not seen or used the TS optics tube but have heard they are nice. I was not aware they used the OO UK mirrors and was always lead to believe they use GSO mirrors.

    I just wonder whether you have solved the problem I have been getting increasingly frustrated over, I knew I had seen in one of your videos that a coma corrector never fitted very well , I have an Orion VX 12, and thought for now I would get my sky watcher coma corrector I had on my pds 200 & use that to begin with & use that with my ZW0533 mm pro , but I run out of inward focus just as it’s beginning to get there tried many different things as that’s how I usually problems solved by trying hundreds of things until I luckily hit the right one 😂, I can use it without the corrector so at least I am seeing something but it has got bad stars , but I see with your baader MP3cc that sounds like you had the same problem but you can take the lip off that and push it right in the tube , if this solves my problem I will be ecstatic as I love big Newtonians & let’s just say I can run before I can walk 😂, hopefully though this sounds like it may solve my problem thanks Glen 🙏

    • @Astrobloke
      @Astrobloke  4 місяці тому +1

      The Skywatcher lip means you cannot insert the image train in far enough to achieve focus. The MPCC as you rightly say has a removable lip so allows this and focus achieved. It is still close to fully in but in a way thats a good thing as less leverage on the focuser to cause tilt.
      I recently bought the Starizona Nexus .75 which is fantastic, bit pricey but really nice CC and focus achieved no issues.
