He was forming bands with much older people at age 10. Some of us have been listening to him since the early 80s. He has stayed true to his style to this day. Best vibrato in the business, imo.

Yngwie is the most famous of a wave of "neo-classical" style guitarists that came out of the 80's. His style works perfectly with an orchestra, although he normally plays with a metal band.

Ing vay is his name, never forgotten once heard. He's the maestro of the strings, played guitar at 5yrs old, classically trained pianist by 9. Hes my hero and inspires my recorder playing wich believe me its hard keeping up with his improvising style.

Malmsteen is Influenced by the baroque music of Bach and Vivaldi, Malmsteen is one of the precursors of the neoclassical metal, it is heavy metal with elements of classical music.
In his band today there is a keyboard player named Nick Marino. However, it was with Swedish keyboardist Jens Johansson that Malmsteen became one of the pioneers of power metal, with fantasty themes and orchestral sounds in an epic atmosphere.
Jens left the band and later played in Stratovaius, a band from Finland. Nightwish's Tuomas basically looked to Startovarius for inspiration for Nightwish's keyboards.

This truly is Yngwie (pronounced Ing-Vay) in his natural environment. Not that he can't sound great with his metal band. But he sees himself (according to the interview he gave prior to this performance) that he considers himself as a Classical Soloist who happens to play the electric guitar.
The difference between Yngwie and Metallica, or any others who have done this sort of thing, is due to the fact that it was written for this specific type of performance. This is what he had in mind when it was composed.

Yngwie is one of my hugest influences as a player. There have been many imitators since he absolutely shook the guitar world’s very foundations when he hit the scene, but no one really sounds like him. As one commenter said, he has always stayed true to himself, but that also kinda means that after a few songs you’ve pretty much heard everything you’re gonna hear. It doesn’t get old to me, but it can to some folks. I feel that way about bluegrass music, where I’m astounded and wrought with admiration for the 20 minutes I can stand to listen to it. People may come at me for that point of view (since opinions are not allowed on UA-cam lol), but I also think every guitarist since about 1982 owes some shred (pun) of debt to the “Maestro”, and should at least listen to a few of his tunes. I would suggest the original studio version of Far Beyond the Sun to get a feel of the unleashed beast that this dude is.

"Fugue" and "Trilogy Suite op 5 First Movement" from the same concert are good too. Though if want to hear beautiful neo-classical guitar like this but with more emotion you should check out Jason Becker's "River of Longing", "Air", " End of the Beginning", "Altitudes" or the song "Images" from Cacophony which was his first band playing alongside Marty Friedman when he was still 17 yrs old. His music will hit harder when you read his tragic back story and how brilliant he was before the age of 20.

He is coming from Sweden. Actual given name is Yngve which is even harder to pronounce. He has probably changed the spelling to make it easier to pronounce. Your pronounciation is quite close to what he expects. The letter "Y" in Swedish is close to "I" but "darker". Difficult for foreigners to handle. It is a vowel and was written "ij" 250 years ago.
Check Mr Malmsteen when he plays acustic guitar!
Your discussion on classically trained musicians is interesting! Pop/rock musicians with a classical background adds a lot to rock music diversity: Jon Lord in Deep Purple, all musicians in Yes, Steve Vai etc. However, some of the most "complicated" rock musicians may have a more complicated background often adding jazz like Keith Emerson and Frank Zappa.

    Ing-Vay Malm-Steen.
You gave a wide grin everytime he did a 21st fret bend :) Also, that strat has a scalloped fretboard which is a Yngwie signature setup and leads to some of why he sounds the way he does. It's not a normal strat at all.

One of his best tracks is Battlefield which is more grunge than classical, either way, he's a god of the strings, crisp, clear, harmonious and a genius of arpeggios, sweeps and picking not forgetting his super fast shredding. Yes, many came after yngwie such as Steve vi but each musician are gracious enough to acknowledge malmsteen as their inspiration. His tone is clean and never fooks up the notes! He can set the mood, romantic classical then grungy part-time bump n grind with your partner, sexy or what? Any takers.

Yngwie performed with an orchestra before pretty much all those other bands you mentioned,, but the real kicker is that this video you reacted to showcased his classical Concerto that *he* himself composed entirely, every single note of it for every single instrument! All the other performers you mentioned simply attached an orchestra to "tag along" and play along with some kind of version of a traditional rock/metal song. Not this. None of those other performers you mentioned have the musical knowledge to compose an entire *classical* concerto, over 40 minutes long, by their lonesome selves. Malmsteen stands tall above the rest.

In my personal opinion, most guitarists are the same. All of them can learn the same song and play it if they want. Just what I have seen from bands covering songs of other bands, etc., etc. Only difference in guitar players is how they act doing it. Most metal guitarist's do the crazy outrageous act for the oooo's and aaaa's. If you learned every note and such of this guitar solo, you could play it too. Give me a orchestra without the guitar anyday.

You made the same mistake Doug did...or bumped into the same problem. What you reacted to was, while still good, not actually the Icarus Dream Suite Op. 4 but the fanfare for Icarus, Opus 1. Here's the explainer: ua-cam.com/video/byGN7fGx75U/v-deo.html The original tune, which would be better with a full ochestra, is actually better than the fanfare version with the orchestra. Better developed with a helluva lot more nuance. Enjoy!
