Reason why the Mercedes Benz was idling poorly was due to lack of maintenance. If the owner replaced the engine air filter and the sparks plugs on time, he/she wouldn’t have those issues to begin with. Preventative maintenance is the key to make almost any car perform the way they were supposed to.

In 1967 my mother had a 1958 British Ford 2-door 'Popular' car. On a Sunday, I would clean its spark plugs and ignition points, and adjust the carburettor idling, so I could start the car, engage 1st gear, let up on the clutch, and get out of the car while it trickled along beside me at walking pace, like a family pet, perfectly smoothly. Remembering to shut it down before the intersection.
