  • National Trust Formby is a much-loved nature haven for both wildlife and people. The coastline is home to one of Europe’s best sand dune habitats, which is constantly changing. Caring for such a special and dynamic environment presents interesting challenges and exciting opportunities.
Lead Ranger Kate talks about the impact of coastal change at Formby and why natural sand dune movement is crucial to create habitats for rare species such as natterjack toads and sand lizards.
You can learn more about areas of Formby’s sand dunes that have become too stable and disconnected. This is due to dense scrub vegetation taking over and unnatural elements such as old construction rubble and dumped tobacco waste creating barriers for natural processes. Kate also shares how we’re restoring the sand dunes in these areas as part of the Dynamic Dunescapes conservation project to create space for wildlife to thrive.
Every time you pay to park, scan your membership card, give your time, or simply take your litter home with you, you’re helping to protect this precious landscape so that it’s here for everyone to enjoy forever. Thank you for your support.
