Ohh, I'm so glad you are back with DJI Action cam and Mic audio information. I have both the Action 4 and 5 and I was so confused with exactly what you have presented in this video. Thank you. And thank the commenter below for asking about 32 bit float on the DJI Mic 2's because I have seen more wrong answers on YT videos than you can believe.
Alright, Wayne. Great video 👍 Although I have been getting into my phones for vlogging, I'm starting to get that itch again for an action camera. Unless GoPro do something drastic, I wont be going anywhere near a Hero ever again. However, I've never had "show stopper" issues with DJI and have had a number of their cameras and have been very happy with them. If there's something crazy during Black Friday, I may be tempted to get the Action 5 Pro. Also, the audio functions on the 5 are way better than anything GoPro have ever done or have. Again, great informative video 👍 I hope you are keeping well buddy. Cheers, Dave.
Great video. You're really good at explanations and teaching things. The Action 5 sounds like an audio powerhouse. Also, you seem like an entirely different person...compared to who you are in your other channel. That's fascinating. Both versions of you are fine, though.
Hello Wayne! Thank you for the video! I didn´t find anything related to Automatic Gain Control in the instructions. I´m looking for the best motovloggin setup. I´m using a boya by-k4 adapter. What do you think about the best configurationi? Turn AGC on or off? If it´s turned on I think that the gain should be higher than if you have it turned off. Thanks in advance!
When I Mic 2 TX is connected to the Action 5, if you connect a USB-C headphone, you can listen to what the Mic 2 is picking up. The Monitor Volume raises or lowers the volume being sent to these headphones. That said, there is some latency when monitoring the Mic 2 TX this way (i.e. someone will speak into a TX and you'll hear it through the headphones slightly delayed).
If a Mic 2 is connected, the video file will only have audio from the Mic 2. However, you can set Built-in Mic Audio Backup to "on" and the camera will generate a separate wav file of the audio captured with the built-in mics (which you would have to mix in post). Additionally, you can set the Mic 2 to record internally for a separate wav file of the TX. But if you want an mp4 video file with both the Mic 2 audio and Built-in Mic audio mixed together (or separated into a L/R stereo track), then no, the Action 5 PRO can't do that (as of this version of the firmware).
Great video, thanks! I had a terrible recording experience at an exhibition this week with the Action 5 and Mic 2, it seems the combination was adding massive compression somewhere and the background noise was as loud as my voice. I also used my Rode ME in dynamic mode and that was much better. I'll have to use the Rode in future for environments like that. As you say, the controls are limited to overall gain when used with the Mic 2. I"ll have another try and see if reduced gain means less compression. I'll also check if the internal file in the Mic 2 is better than what the camera stored but I doubt it. To give an idea of the background noise, the level meter on the screen was at about 90% before I even started talking but that didn't really reflect the noise in the room compared to my voice (that gain setting being what I would usually use for my voice)
Thank you for the video. I'm just about to purchase two of the" DJI mic 2""s for motorcycle vlogging. I have to also say that the marketing team at DJI came up with an absolutely absurd name to call the DJI wireless mic receivers a" DJI Mic 2" regardless of if you're buying just 1 mic or multiple mics! Very confusing Should have been something like" DJI Mic Gen 2"
Hi, I found your video about the Osmo Action 5 Pro camera interesting. I have two questions: 1. Is it possible to establish an audio-in connection similar to the GoPro Media Mod, allowing two-channel (LR) audio-in via a USB-C adapter? 2. Will the DJI OA 5 Pro recognize a mixer (e.g., Soundcraft Notepad 12FX) as an external audio device for podcasting when connected via a USB-C to USB Type B (printer cable)? Thank you in advance for your response. Have a great day!
No, the mp4 video file that is recorded to the camera only uses a single audio source (either wireless DJI Mics, USB-C audio or built-in camera mics). The workaround would be to enable the built-in mic backup recordings and then mix them in post while having the mp4 with the TX audio.
Thanks Wayne for this info. I'm new to Action cameras and first time using of the DJI Action 5 Pro. Is it possible to use external microphones with 32 bit float settings in the MP4 file? I'm referring to "non-DJI" external mics using the USB-C to 3.5mm stereo input. Thanks again and have a great day, James.
As of right now, 32-bit float only applies to audio files and is more or less a file type container that is able to store additional audio information that's typically omitted in 24-bit recordings. Right now, mp4 video files cannot write 32-bit float bit depth audio into the baked in audio tracks of video files. As of today, the only way to take advantage of 32-bit float wav files is to use them separately in post synced / replacing the baked in audio of a mp4. With the rise of 32-bit float, could a new video file format (like say an mp5) that incorporates 32-bit float audio data? Maybe, but that could take years if at all.
I really wish they would allow the internal mic to be one channel and the wireless mic to be a second channel and save them both to the video instead of syncing a separate file in post.
Hey great video, do you think the AGC will also be implemented to the wireless DJI mics? Rode just release the new micro mics with the Gain Assist function, wonder if it's a similar concept.
It's hard to say, but you never know what DJI will roll out in future firmware updates. In the meantime, in lieu of AGC for Mic 2 transmitters, the work around would be to record on the TX in 32-bit float for a back-up to have in the event the audio clips in camera (in the MP4 file).

From a Cold Start, preliminary test show that as soon as the DJI logo fades upon startup, an external mic is almost immediately recognized once the camera displays the image view. I did a quick test with a BOYA adapter, the official DJI Audio Adapter as well as a generic USB-C mic. A warm start requires a few seconds for an external mic to show up. In both of these scenarios, it seems to be recognized much faster than on the Action 4. Cold starting the Action 5 with the Shutter Button also produced similar rapid recognition. I know this was a big issue with the Action 4 with motovloggers and if there is interest, I may do a start up time comparison video.
Hi Wayne! Thank you for another amazing video. Please help me with some info. If I turn off the camera, does it turn off the TXs automatically? And similarly, when I turn the camera on, do the transmitters come on automatically?
Unfortunately, no. The Action 5 and the Mic 2 TX need to be powered on/off individually. The only power setting available on the camera with regards to the Mic 2 TX units is the "Auto Power Off" which when enabled, the Mic 2 TX will auto power off after a set time of being idle while when the setting is disabled, the TX will never power off until it's done manually or runs out of battery.

Hi Wayne. So much information as usual, which I appreciate. So, if you put both mics into mono, are the files stored jointly on the sd card in the OA5. Hard to explain, but I am a motovlogger; if I have mic 1 in my helmet to record voice, and mic 2 in a back pack to record the motorcycle, will the file be synced as one on the camera SD Card, or would I have to sync in editing ?
Mic 2 transmitters are in sync with the video when connected to the camera. If you set the channel setting within the camera to Mono, both TX will be combined into a single track (so your helmet TX & backpack TX will be mixed together at whatever gain you set each TX to). If you set the channel to Stereo, one TX is recorded in the L of the stereo track and the other to the R. You can then split them in post and adjust their levels separately. Nice video good job! But there is one more thing. What if I am riding motorcycle or bicycle and I want to use gps remote controler? Yes it can control camera but once mic2 goes to auto sleeep mode it wont be wake up together with camera😢 that sucks... Can it be solved somehow?
I don't have a remote so I can't comment on how all the wireless accessories work together, but I always have the Mic 2 auto power off disabled so that my TX never sleeps (then again, I'm never shooting for more than 30 mins at a time).
Great video. Anyway, still have a big issue regarding the date and hour on the files recordes into mic2. All appear dates from the year 2000. 😞 Big fail from DJI
Strange, my Mic 2 files display the correct time and date metadata. Have you updated your Mic 2 TX to the latest firmware? If not, here's a video guide on how to do that: ua-cam.com/video/dQXWlxT9jNw/v-deo.html
@WayneRECs yes. I've bought the pocket3 Bundle, so no receiver for me. All updates done until today, and still have issues with the system date and time. Factory reseted the mic and pocket3 too. But with some research online i'm able to know it is more common than strange. Cheers and thank you for your Help!
Been watching your videos, your sound quality is outstanding. If I may, I would like some advice from you ? I am trying to get an idea how to setup a dual mic for motovlogging with a DJI Action 4, one mic would be inside my helmet for when I need to talk and the other in my backpack or pocket to record the motorcycle's sound (it's a cruiser / custom bike so they sound really nice). I am wondering if you have any recommendations ? I would like for the two audio tracks to be separate so I can mix them differently, is there any way I can do this without upgrading to the DJI action 5 ? Thank you Wayne
While the Action 5 could do this fairly easily with 2 Mic 2 TX paired to it, for the Action 4, the easiest way would be to get a wireless mic set that comes with 2 transmitters (one for your helmet & one for your backpack). This wireless set would need to be able to Split record (i.e. send transmitter 1 to the L channel & transmitter 2 to the R channel) and the Action 4 would need to be set to Channel Stereo.
Hey, i need help. I want to buy this camera. I am planing to use it when i driving my bike. And also, i am gonna need an intercom. But i heard that this camera is not adabteble any intercom. So here is my question. Do i need dji mic 2? Or if i buy that camera and any intercom, can i use both record my voice and comminicate my friend?
My Dji Mic 2 is stuck in mono, how do i set it to stereo? on my camera mono is grayed out and i cannot change to stereo. do i need to have 2 mics for stereo? i just duplicated the sound in post to get a "stereo" recording
Have you updated the firmware on all of your devices? When I connect a single Mic 2 TX to my Action 5, under the PRO mic settings in the camera, Channel can be toggled between Mono or Stereo but the "TX1/TX2 L/R" is grayed out (and only available with 2 TX connected). Inherently, each Mic 2 is only a Mono signal. Like you said, typically when/if set to Stereo, the camera duplicates that mono signal and writes it to both L/R in a stereo track.
When DJI Mic 2 is connected and 32-bit float is enabled, will the camera record sound in 32-bit float or is 32-bit float only recorded internally in the DJI Mic 2?
32-bit float is only recorded locally on the TX themselves. The wireless signal is 16-bit 48kHz which is what is recorded within the MP4 video file. The camera's backup wav is also 16-bit 48kHz.

@@WayneRECsWhat is the monitor volume? In the camera settings, there is no reaction
Hello. Best greetings from Poland. How are you ? How's your eyesight?
Thanks for asking! I'm doing well!
@@WayneRECs Thanks for clearing that up for me!

@@WayneRECsThanks a lot for the feedback, it turns out that you can adjust the volume only in the microphone menu where you can lower and raise the dibels and only there, since the connection via Bluetooth is direct
