As an elite martial artists I have the ability to train full time but for many people out there it’s often a struggle to get to classes. Training at home or alone is a must for continued development. Keep on training guys!!
4 years ago , I had the 'luxury' of training with partners! . Now i have to train all by myselves!. Have been solo training for 4 years now!. I always had special ideas on how to train in a particular day by utilizing what's around me!. But then using a chair to practice takedown defence/distance control was something I never thought of !😅 Thanks for enlightening me!👍👍👍
Safdar Kh same here. My only good training friend went to the navy and I no longer have a partner. So for 3 years. It's been solo. Shadow boxing, videos, visualization training, heavy bag, door frames, shadow boxing with weapons, weapon drills etc etc.
What about meetup groups? what could be interesting is exchanging different styles. For example you can show a person with judo boxing or karate techniques and they can show you some of their techniques.
Thanks sensei Ando for your tip on working out by oneself. We at times find ourselves doing it whether it's because our partner is busy or it's convenient etc. Found your video was good advice. Please keep providing us with more of your videos and we'll keep watching, applying it, and providing comments. Thanks again !
Idk I think as far as just learning the basics and keeping good physical condition would go a long way. But you're right, you're not going become a black belt alone. But they do have things like double end bags that help you train timing and reflexes. With enough hardwork you could at least become a competent brawler.
Another great video with a great message! Keep up the great work Ando! One of my favorite things to tell students: "If you are low on resources, Get Resourceful!".
Great tip! I personally use dumbbells and nunchaku in my practice and I can't even begin to tell just how much that improved my power, balance, punch recovery (meaning pulling back my arm quickly after I throw a punch), footwork and hipwork, as well as a guard to defend myself from hits with one arm (other arm holding a nunchaku which happens to be a great yet merciless teacher). Thank you sir!
Thank you sir! I wonder how many martial artists ever cared to consider the benefits of learning things like juggling, writing with the non dominant hand, archery, driving stick shift, things of that nature. Challenging ourselves is what this whole thing has always been about. Goes back to your one video there when you said ABC always be conditioning. Even in mundane tasks we can choose to try it with our non dominant hand or choose activities that make us synchronize our hands together. But how many martial artists would look at something like juggling and think oh what a phony! Or look at a ballerina and say that's not martial arts! In reality martial arts is a colorful way of war, so if it translates, I say train it!
I agree! So many activities and small challenges translate into skill development for martial arts. Keep the brain and body working! Thank you for the comment! 🙏🏻
I practice with juggling flower sticks, and it greatly helps with my coordination. It's using two sticks to control another stick, usually tossing it between the two or spinning it, using one or both sticks. I've come to learn after months of practicing these juggling sticks, that the discipline and focus needed to practice was enough to get anything done. So I stared involving work out routines with my practice sessions, and it greatly improved my confidence in solo training
Thanks Ando, it's been hard to me to find the time and will to train... I need to listen more of your inspiring podcasts ;) (and watch more of your inspiring videos).
Thank you guys for an other great video. Your videos is really educative and inspiring. It has actually inspired a lot of my own videos. Great work Keep it up!
The do something with something is a true thing... Because I am a loner in training and then after I got a fight in school and its 50-50 working...because our imagination is limited which you can't predict the next move of your opponents if we train alone except if you have a photographic memory
One thing that I have found useful is to record myself while I practice, this allows me to see what I can imprrove on and also get feedback from other people. Happy new year Sifu!

Thank you Ando! I really needed this. I am always stressed when training with a lot of people so I find it more easy training by myself, but I didn't know how. This helped me start training at home by myself. Thank you! Always effective and amazing videos.
Thank you for the kind feedback! Yes, you can develop many important skills on your own. But find times to engage with others when you can, too. 😁 Happy training!👍🏼
A very honest and detailed video. A Martial Artist can always look for ways to improve even when training alone although practicing with someone will really help us improve a lot.. I somehow remember the quote "two heads (or more) are better than one". Keep it up and more power!!!

Josh Mapa Thanks for the tip I’ll try what I can I did study Taekwondo when I was In middle school for three years and left it now I’m going to stick with Kung fu training and hope it gets me somewhere 🤞🏻
I trained alone for a number of years when living and working in a remote area in Australia. During that period I worked on speed, power and accuracy constantly, and also reflected a great deal on principles such as the centreline, spin-the-wheel, and draw-the-bow, etc, while training using a pole with points marked upon it, among other things, to increase said accuracy while working on these concepts, and on angles in my footwork etc, also. During the entire time, l did no training with any other people. Upon returning to sparring, I was surprised to find that I had most certainly effectively incorporated all of the things that l had read about and worked on throughout that time. Rather than just maintain attributes etc, I had definitely enhanced them, and had increased my knowledge, understanding and abilities in the martial arts. It is truly a remarkable path in life, in which one never ceases to learn and grow, indefinitely. Peace.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Sean! Training alone definitely enhances your skills-- no question. It's just difficult to test those skills! :) Happy training to you!
This video is very useful. Ando Mierzwa makes a great point: “martial arts is about relationships.” In order to fully understand a martial art or kinesthetic culture, one must orient themselves within a participatory context that assumes the presence of others outside the self. Aside from the need to be taught technique along with other implicit components of a holistic martial art by a trained professional, social participation with teacher and other students is crucial to the legitimate embodiment of an art. This is because most of the technique involved with learning a martial art considers somatic movement in relation to another body in the context of self-defense, where one body must be quicker and stronger than the other to avoid defeat and achieve success. Quicker and stronger could take many forms, depending on the style of the art and the character of the practitioner. However, technique is not the sole component of mastering a martial art. Savvy and cunning are also requirements, which are skills that develop through sensory experience with another body. Technique is something that be learned through observation, but skill is something that is learned through experience and bodily sensations. Both of these things rely on learning within a social context, one where body to body communication can take place. Anthropologist Jaida Kim Samudra in his research on White Crane Silat asserts that the “new social identities” that form from engaging with a kinesthetic culture rely on “shared bodily practices” (Samudra 2008: 665). His work emphasizes what he calls thick participation or what has been called legitimate peripheral participation which is described as cultural knowledge recorded in the amateur body and dependent on shared social experience (2008: 667). The reason why learning must be done in social setting has much less to do with the communication and discourse that may take place and more to do with the kinesthetic practice of participatory experiential and sensory knowledge that takes place through body to body interaction. Anthropologist Lauren Miller Griffith in her research on Capoeira upholds that one must “become a full participant in the phenomenon” to learn, understand, and embody the art (Griffith 2013: 1). In her report, she details the importance of apprenticeship pilgrimage to a center or ‘birthplace’ of kinesthetic culture to further legitimize a practitioner’s role in their embodiment of a martial art. This pilgrimage is important when coupled with legitimate peripheral participation in more authentic spaces because it leads to a spiritual, physical, and social transformation (2013: 2). It is in these authentic spaces that a practitioner can orient themselves within social and sensory experience to grasp a better understanding of the explicit and implicit components of the kinesthetic culture. Explicit are those that can be learned through direct or remote instruction of discursive elements and could potentially be mastered alone, but this mastery would not hold up against one that is also versed in the implicit which are those that are unspoken, sensory, and experiential components. These components have a lot to do with “conceptualizations of the body and self” that are sometimes hard to put into words (Samudra 2008: 678).
This is good advice, training something out of your control. That is a fight in a nutshell, you're half a fight, the other half is the other person. You need to be able to control that other half.
Hello I've been training MMA for almost a year now but I only train once a week because I'm still in senior high school. I rarely spar because I'm very busy studying. But I've sparred more than 6 times now I think and it really helped me to be more conscious about my techniques like doing in n out after attacking and changing angles so your opponent couldn't counter you and timing my opponents rhythm, so I could attack safely without getting countered. I have 1 question is there a way to reduce your flinching alone without a partner. I've already tried tying a key or rock in a rope then swinging it back and forth and try to do some head movements defense on it but I still flinch. I do shadowboxing and heavy bag punching. I think my striking techniques is decent now but my flinch response and defense is crappy. Please respond, thank you.
Good for you! Training to not flinch by yourself is not easy. Even though it sounds crazy, can you ask someone you live with to spend five minutes throwing punches at your face? They can wear gloves! Just start slow, don't hit back, and focus on staring down those punches and breathing. A little extra practice will go a long way!
hey, this does give me the real answer i want, everyone say impossible to fight or traning alone in martial art, you say fact-Fact-you will never be a great martial artist if you only practice alone. There is simply no substitute for a live training partner.. but this does help me and i know one thing without others people i will be come the greatest martial art person and all you will speaking my name, i will broken impossible thing even death coming i will never afraid wait unit end, i promise i will out from hell and make this
What about a pillow I do MMA and I go to a gym but I also want to learn faster and im interested in practicing Jiu jitsi by myself aswell as with other people will a pillow be acceptable?
i've been subscribe for you for a year now. mabuhay all the way from Manila. you're a good sensei and all your tips are very helpful especially to me :)
So - hm - you study Ando style hm? Huh hm hahahaha hm so you think you can defeat me hua hm hmm... 😧 Well, yeah, probably...😳...hm 🙏 There is a famous saying in the world of Kung Fu: "When Ando style is added to Ando style, demons and spirits will be terrified" and "When the Ando is added to the Ando, heroes will sigh knowing they are no match against it."
This was great, thanks, I've been looking for "self defense activities" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Eonuke Stupendous Equalizer - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is an awesome one off guide for discovering how to self defence techniques to keep your family safe without the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got cool results with it.
LOL. I confess. I have used a chair: lying on my back, trying to move it around above me (and hopefully not letting it fall on my face!). I mastered the chair and moved on to tables and ladders and... I'm just kidding. I totally lifted Thor's hammer though... I didn't. I suck.
I got bully a lot and also my work place too. I am 5.6 but there is lots of people still bullying me coz my looks n my lack of confidence. So now I feel like I should do something about it and I will do it my self first . Practicing my self with my mind and body than m gonna try get used to it . Takes time but time is my enemy. So m going to challenge with my body and mind .
hey this is a great video i think more people need to see this especailly those who have that training block or those who are just starting, also Ando you remind me of Dan Millman man what an encouragement!
Thank you for the tip I've been training alone for 9 years and using objects one time I took the bed apart and the soft stuff off of it so it was just wood a wooden bed basically and I hung it up in my backyard and I took the cushion off the chair and hung it up on the wooden bed and I just punched it kicked it but when my family members saw it they thought it was ridiculous and useless but they didn't realize how much I was improving. Well it is better to be with the pack then to be a lone wolf.
Sensei Ando 's training videos are great training aids, he has helped me a lot and I just love his happy life approach. Let's be right, to become good at martial arts you have to put the work in, and a lot of it at that, if you cannot learn to love your art, despite the ups and downs that are part of life, then why bother? As a young man I used to fight constantly, a few months into martial arts I lost the need or maybe better put, the desire to fight outside the Dojo and as a 66yr old who started at 18yrs old if the only purpose was to fight, as opposed to self-defence that I have used very successfully on the 3 times I have been attacked in this time then I would surely have wasted all these decades! I have not, I believe its made be a better human being and most certainly a healthier and happier person!
I actually made my own punching bag yesterday from two thin sofa seats with the back-pillow connected made out of leather ( my mom has a furniture addiction ) put some wood inside for weight, rolled everything together like a kebab with a rope going through the middle attached to a fat stick on the bottom and then rapped it around with duct tape . Ended up looking like a Frankenstein project but I was pretty proud of my creation in the end ^^
Good video Ando. I train alone but I also do sparring with friends from time to time, because it is alfa and omega. I can do a lot of good training on my own but I must test my self and see if it works, that is why sparring is so important. Plus it is so much more fun and I just hope that I can do a lot more sparring this year because I always wanna get better at the art.

HOW TO PRACTICE MARTIAL ART ALONE?
the answer..."YOU CAN'T"
Idk I think as far as just learning the basics and keeping good physical condition would go a long way. But you're right, you're not going become a black belt alone. Essential Oils For Wellness I thought that was pretty funny! XD haha

Stay safe and go spar a car 🙏
"Maybe it's quarantine"
😁
This will be useful for the next time I get attacked by my parents
Quality content
I'm trying! Thank you!
You know this video isnt gonna help u, when u see that the dummie is destroying the teacher.
In fairness, he’s a very smart dummy. 😁
: u’ll need these things
me: im broke.. how
This is good advice, training something out of your control. That is a fight in a nutshell, you're half a fight, the other half is the other person. You need to be able to control that other half.
Agree 100%. It’s a relationship! 👍🏼
Thank you Sensei!
3:21 me imagining myself fighting with my enemies.
yeah that's called shadow fighting
hey, this does give me the real answer i want, everyone say impossible to fight or traning alone in martial art, you say fact-Fact-you will never be a great martial artist if you only practice alone. There is simply no substitute for a live training partner.. but this does help me and i know one thing without others people i will be come the greatest martial art person and all you will speaking my name, i will broken impossible thing even death coming i will never afraid wait unit end, i promise i will out from hell and make this
I like your confidence! Keep fighting!
When he fighting with that dummy it was looking like a old child fighting with a pillow
😂😂lol
It was pretty pathetic. :-)
@@AndoMierzwa Maybe to those who don't know; For the initiated, it's pretty clear that dummy had some training.
😐
@@Msosbog Yes! He watches everything. :D
Yes! Ando is back!!!
Ha! I’m not dead yet. Thank you! :-)
*Psalms 119:104 KJV
Through thy precepts I get Understanding: Therefore I hate every false way.*
What about a pillow I do MMA and I go to a gym but I also want to learn faster and im interested in practicing Jiu jitsi by myself aswell as with other people will a pillow be acceptable?
Creativity is all we have! Choke that pillow! :-)
Yeah ... Your cat doesn't count....
Unless it’s a tiger. Tigers count.
Ando Mierzwa True. That will be the best training ever
:D
Calm down my dog is like training :'(

Mr Fishfinger hahaha
Looking pretty sharp in the solo training drills, Sensei!! Gave me some ideas!
Digital animation is amazing nowadays. Happy training, Sifu! 👊🏼
ando what all kinds of styles of martial arts do you do?
At this point, Ando style. :-) But I'm studying Kung Fu, BJJ, Karate, and Systema nowadays. Thanks for asking!
So - hm - you study Ando style hm? Huh hm hahahaha hm so you think you can defeat me hua hm hmm...
😧 Well, yeah, probably...😳...hm
🙏
There is a famous saying in the world of Kung Fu: "When Ando style is added to Ando style, demons and spirits will be terrified" and "When the Ando is added to the Ando, heroes will sigh knowing they are no match against it."
You are great sir , Love from India 👍👍👍
Love from the USA, sir!
does Shane from fighttips' tennis balls count?
That was a great tip! You bet!
Surprisingly prescient! Thank you. Terry.
Right! Now more than ever. Stay safe!
ha ha ha ha
man you killing me !!!
Some good tips while we're all doing our solo quarantine training
Unfortunately true!
Actually its not a fact. Look up a guy Name "WORKOUT black ninja" he trains alone and is amazing.
Sosai oyama founded a whole new karate style all alone then he beat the crap out of everyone who agreed to fight him. 1 is a mighty number.
Ando going to town on the heavy bag and dummy😂😂👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
Dealing with some anger issues. :-)
Ando Mierzwa hahah ok 😂😂love you ando man
Such a convenient video for me, thank you. Subbed.
LOL.
I trained with my wall and broke 3 knuckles
I can see through my brothers room now though
Congratulations on the new window! :-)
This is why I like training with weapons. I like the weight and resistance. Plus it just feels badass.
Right on both counts! 😄
When I need a partner to practice on I just use my girlfriend....
Jk I don’t have one 😭
Don’t give up!😄
hey this is a great video i think more people need to see this especailly those who have that training block or those who are just starting, also Ando you remind me of Dan Millman man what an encouragement!
Wow! Dan Millman was one of my first influences, so that’s a great compliment. Thanks very much!
Great idea with the chair. I also use a wooden stick, one side on the floor, hold with other hand and move around like Bagua.
Excellent! I do that, too!
You are amazing !!! Thank youbfor you'r videos !!! Helps so much !!! Cheers and keep up with the good work !!!
Very kind of you to say. Happy training to you!
This video is just what I needed right now. Thank you!
I’m so happy to hear that! Thanks for letting me know. :-)
Wow! I love the bed idea! Point for you! 👍🏼 if you can find a pack, great. Otherwise, keep howling!
This is a Golden Teaching... God bless Sensei Ando 💙💙💙
Blessings to you, too, my friend! 🙏🏻
Good advice and you help solve my own problem! I will use these techniques in new year.
Awesome. Have a great year, sir!
Damn, this is such a cool video. I forgot how awesome this channel was
I appreciate that! Thanks!
today i've got a quick tip to make the most out of your solo training, here it comes
*dodges it skillfully* i've improved at dodging surprise attacks
Keep dodging! :)
I love this video. Love you Sensei.
Love to you! 🙏🏻
Thank you. 🙂
You're clearly a success story , sir!
That is awesome! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! 👊🏼
Thanks for the feedback sifu mierzwa. And thanks for your inspiration and lessons.
@@AfroV My pleasure. Happy hitting! :)
You’re smart, my friend! Friends helping friends get tougher and stronger is what it’s all about! Happy training!
Thanks Ando and keep up the good work
Thanks! Peace!
