I’m an apprentice. Currently just finished my unvented install assessment at college. Was straight forward. Just have to make sure D1 and D2 sizes are correct

Why you didn't resort to a more destructive stance, either carving up the cylinder (once drained) or reforming the access opening size out of frustration and questionable necessity I don't know... Assuming it's dangerous if it's not I stalled correctly ( expansion vessel ,PRVs ,tun dish etc ) can any plumber fit those or do you need some sort of special accreditation ?

Hi Mark, started watching the drama, had to stay with it till 1am! I know you felt like it was a pig of a job. But your guardian angel was with you. Could of pushed your luck with the drain valve valve, when the system was full !!! Now that would have been a bad day at the office.
Best tool I've brought since getting back into plumbing is my dewalt cordless angle grinder...(removed safety gaurd !)I even use it to cut old toilet handles out of cisterns....Never be afraid to Use one when removing old stuff that's Not going back in ! My tip for next time ! Great honest footage....we've all been there and perfect advice....walk away....tommorows another day ❤👍
Just seen video, excellent recovery from a nightmare start. I'm having a pressurised hot water system fitted and I just wanted some unbiased advice from another plumber. should I get a certificate for the installation and is there a requirement legal or otherwise to have the pressure system checked at regular intervals by a qualified plumber. 👍👍

I felt your pain and frustration with that water tank. I had something similar once with a iron bathtub we eventually took a sledge hammer to it. They must of brought the bathtub in through the window as the tub was bigger than the door frame with the jams removed. Sash windows were replaced with UPVC about 25 years ago
Tidy work, happy customer, jobs a good'un. Have worked in plenty of industrial settings where plant has had to be taken apart in situ to be removed, never in someone's occupied house, what a ball ache. Fair play Mark.
Thanks for sharing the struggle. It's easy to feel like you're the only person who has a mare from time to time. Be really useful to know which competent persons scheme you used to sign it off. I've been asked to fit some direct cylinders but they're not covered by the Gas Safe scheme. Thanks

Interesting about the 300mm riser as regulation for the PRV over there makes sense we do it here too but don’t think its a regulation, too many times we have seen calorifiers PRV go off and they hit the back of the closest junction and shoot straight back out of the tundish

Mark just a question if I may - how do you manage to notify this Unvented installation to Building Control - mostly I can do it via Gas Safe if of course the unvented tank is part of a gas boiler system - but Im not part of any other association so its an issue for me.? Brilliant video
I'm not sure you can, at least I don't know a way to do it. I can't notify directly to building control here in Cornwall and as you say, if there's no gas boiler involved then Gas Safe won't do it. I'd like to know what the answer is.

Hi mate another great video. Im same as you ish just over 30 years plumbing and gas, I had the same problem as you years ago with the same old tank. The hot water draw off on the bottom has a piece of pipe inside going up to only draw the hot water from the top and the cold water inlet is vice versa if that makes sense, so if the drain off is buggered then big trouble, on the bright side i did get two plastic buckets of Amazon this week so thank you and keep the videos coming👍
Nice video mark only one comment is the expansion vessel! It would be great if you could explain the pressure side of it all , what are the prv set to as the vessel has to be the same, most vessels come pre charged at 2 bar but with out a pressure gauge on the prv are we assumeing it's the same!
As a Plumber felt your pain with that job. A lot of younger tradesmen don't realise that in the 1970s a lot of airing cupboards were preformed and the house was built around them. Some were a metal frame with the tank and cylinder already plumbed in. They were just put in place and then frames built around them. An absolute nightmare to get out. In the Merseyside area the main culprits were a construction company called Unit Construction. Anyways ended up a nice tidy job well done
Where they j Not called cozy bugs. Tank cylinder boiler all inside a metal frame. Remember taking a few off them out replacing with a combi. Plenty scrap in them but a nightmare to get out
Mark love your videos but if you think about it if the ‘hot’ water came out of the bottom connection then it would never really be hot, it would surely just draw cold water straight from the cold water storage. That bottom connection must surely terminate at the top of the ‘cylinder’. Hope all your injuries where minor and healed quickly. Keep up the good work pal and this shows REAL world plumbing at its best/worst👍
What a job! How come you didn't need to connect the balanced feed side of the PRV? Is it because the house had an electric shower and no other mains /mixer showers?
NIce vid. Reference the water cylinder for info only and I am not telling anyone how to do their jiob.....I use a Transfer pump, costs £90 and takes dewalt batteries.Or Makita depending on which you buy and Worth every penny. Milwaukee do one for £220, but these cheaper coppies are just as good. Connect hose either end, drill a hole in the the top of cylinder and poke hose in, and other hose down the loo or outside - Turn on and leave. Stress free. (I will show you next time I see your van parked up) Have a coffee, and plan how to get the damn cylinder out. Nice to see an old fellow like me grafting still.
Great job Mark had a similar job in my time with BG but the tank was fitted above a substantial steel frame that I had to cut out..thanks for bringing back that nightmare..haha
Looked a nightmare getting that cylinder out,get yourself an transfer pump that you connect to your drill if you need to drain one of those again.Great video.

Did you quote a day rate on this Mark? Horrible, horrible cylinders. Did many back in the day, there were loads in Notts, Leicester area. I remember being on a swap for 3 days, that wasn't for unvented either! We were given 4 hours to do it. This was an indirect, not direct immersion. Plus, I was on my own like you. Top work matey.

Gledhills that's a name to conjure with. Their original factory is in my town Blackpool. I used to supply them with their stationery and office furniture. Their products and factory is fantastic and used to love seeing their new ideas.

Hi Mark. Nice video again. Only thing I'd of also checked is the expansion vessel pressure 👌 Perfect time and easy to check it's 3.0 bar as is empty as well. Installed a Gledhill a couple of weeks back. Didn't have the strap it's the hook on slotted type and wasn't very installer friendly. That new type of fixing looks so easy for a change. G3 regs do require all pipework within 1 meter to be insulated but like yourself it looks more professional to insulate all pipework. Quick question. What was that tool you used on the drain off. Mick 👌
@@MJTiffPlumbing I once took out a vented cylinder it was solid from the top 3rd up with scale. I had to drill through the top just to drain it. The weight nearly killed me 😂 People don't realise what our says are like. I'll check that tool out Chum😂🥲
That's a surprisingly complex setup! In Austria all I've seen is pressurised tank with cold and hot connections on the bottom, PRV right at the cold inlet of the tank draining into a little plastic trap that goes into 32 mm pushfit pipe. HT drain pipe is rated for 100C water (pouring boiling water into the kitchen sink shouldn't melt your drains in the wall) so it should be fine. No expansion vessel, I assume you just have to live with the fact the PRV lets off some water every time the tank is heated up. The tank itself would likely be wall-mounted and go as high up the wall as possible to free up storage space underneath. I once removed one of these setups and I can tell you how glad I was it was in a tiled bathroom with a floor drain!
@@MJTiffPlumbing For D2 you can use polypropylene waste pipe (BSEN 1451) which is the push-fit stuff, but not solvent weld PVC. There's CIBSE and BPF guidance about it, but I think YT probably won't let me post a link.
Those old cylinders look like a nightmare. I redid my hot water systems not too long ago and was told fitting a valve on the hot water out is a big no no. Seen it done hundreds of times on new builds. Meant to remove the handles of any I see now.
Brings back some bad memories. I did one three years ago and never again. Weirdly one day after install I get called to a different property with same tank issues. Don’t even bother to loosen the immersions. The copper will have had 40 years of hot suppers.
Glad you like the channel buddy. Not is a pressure relief pipe and will carry hot water, so not allowed under regs to go into plastic guttering. Hence why the pipework had to be copper👍🏼👍🏼
Had to test the immersion heater on one job as part of eicr the cupboard was about ten foot deep the owner had built shelves in front dont envy the plumbers job when that lets go good work mark
Was quoted around £1500 to replace my system with pressurized cylinder. Ended up just catching the end of the green homes scheme (where you only paid a third of the cost of a "green" system) we ended up with solar thermal all installed and passed off for total cost to us of around £1850 (including 210L cylinder) couldn't say no... pleased we did :) PS love your videos...
i take my hat off to u mark working by yourself, just lifting that floor alone would have done my head in, could u not have pushed the new pipe through the old overflow into the cupboard though?
Great video Mark, installation much better now, glad to see you call it a day on day 1 after the fight😂 it’s the best thing to do. I do the same on nightmare jobs, I find if you continue you haven’t got the right head on and either make things worse or make silly mistakes. 👌👍
if you come across this situation in the future I would remove the architrave and door frame then refit on completion,im sure plumbers used to fit tank before the chippy fitted the door and frame
Elson tanks always had a bad attitude. I was taking one out with a mate and he touched the drain tap which dissolved as it wasn't DZ. He stuck his thumb in the hole to stop the flood whilst I ran to get a bung from the van. We had a laugh eventually, but it wasn't funny when it happened, it was total panic 😂

Hello. Question I have cylinder and it runs at descent pressure for 30 seconds then goes to a triccle when hot water comes through. Is this issue my combination block? Great video also
I bet there are many occasions when you could use a helper. Do you have people you can call to help with heavy lifting even if it’s only for an hour or so?
I done a few of those elsons. Drain down always iffy. Had one where the leak had saturated the insulation, so was heavy once out. Absolute mare. Had a apprentice and it was his first day. Didnt see him again.

Elysons are the worst. One I had to take out by reciprocating saw the thing in half. Had a elyson wall hung that was 50% limescale and wouldn't drain was a pain to get off the wall, had to walk it down 3 flights of stairs to turn it upside down in the car park to remove the water. I feel your pain in this video

Yep, and a constant fall, and the measurements… so sighting the tank height enough with a small tank is key.

The installer needs to be G3 certified to install a pressurised system to your home

I always get a few of buckets and drill a bunch of holes in the cylinder, it looks like it's been machine gunned so pretty cool too!

The PRV’s supplied with the cylinder combination valve is 3bar and the T&P valve is 6bar and 90degrees
Sometimes you just need to walk away and come back with fresh eyes the next day, job well done mate.

As a Plumber felt your pain with that job. A lot of younger tradesmen don't realise that in the 1970s a lot of airing cupboards were preformed and the house was built around them.
Some were a metal frame with the tank and cylinder already plumbed in. They were just put in place and then frames built around them. An absolute nightmare to get out. In the Merseyside area the main culprits were a construction company called Unit Construction.
Anyways ended up a nice tidy job well done

I use the milwaukee hackzall with metal cutting blades and right theme to absolute shreds and carry it out in pieces.

Mark love your videos but if you think about it if the ‘hot’ water came out of the bottom connection then it would never really be hot, it would surely just draw cold water straight from the cold water storage. That bottom connection must surely terminate at the top of the ‘cylinder’. Hope all your injuries where minor and healed quickly. Keep up the good work pal and this shows REAL world plumbing at its best/worst👍

What a job! How come you didn't need to connect the balanced feed side of the PRV? Is it because the house had an electric shower and no other mains /mixer showers?
Because the house was already piped up and it would of been a massive job
NIce vid. Reference the water cylinder for info only and I am not telling anyone how to do their jiob.....I use a Transfer pump, costs £90 and takes dewalt batteries.Or Makita depending on which you buy and Worth every penny. Milwaukee do one for £220, but these cheaper coppies are just as good. Connect hose either end, drill a hole in the the top of cylinder and poke hose in, and other hose down the loo or outside - Turn on and leave. Stress free. (I will show you next time I see your van parked up) Have a coffee, and plan how to get the damn cylinder out. Nice to see an old fellow like me grafting still.

Great job Mark had a similar job in my time with BG but the tank was fitted above a substantial steel frame that I had to cut out..thanks for bringing back that nightmare..haha

Did you quote a day rate on this Mark? Horrible, horrible cylinders. Did many back in the day, there were loads in Notts, Leicester area. I remember being on a swap for 3 days, that wasn't for unvented either! We were given 4 hours to do it. This was an indirect, not direct immersion. Plus, I was on my own like you. Top work matey.

Gledhills that's a name to conjure with. Their original factory is in my town Blackpool. I used to supply them with their stationery and office furniture. Their products and factory is fantastic and used to love seeing their new ideas.

Only thing I'd of also checked is the expansion vessel pressure 👌 Perfect time and easy to check it's 3.0 bar as is empty as well.
Installed a Gledhill a couple of weeks back. Didn't have the strap it's the hook on slotted type and wasn't very installer friendly. That new type of fixing looks so easy for a change.
G3 regs do require all pipework within 1 meter to be insulated but like yourself it looks more professional to insulate all pipework.

That's a surprisingly complex setup! In Austria all I've seen is pressurised tank with cold and hot connections on the bottom, PRV right at the cold inlet of the tank draining into a little plastic trap that goes into 32 mm pushfit pipe. HT drain pipe is rated for 100C water (pouring boiling water into the kitchen sink shouldn't melt your drains in the wall) so it should be fine. No expansion vessel, I assume you just have to live with the fact the PRV lets off some water every time the tank is heated up. The tank itself would likely be wall-mounted and go as high up the wall as possible to free up storage space underneath. I once removed one of these setups and I can tell you how glad I was it was in a tiled bathroom with a floor drain!

@@MJTiffPlumbing For D2 you can use polypropylene waste pipe (BSEN 1451) which is the push-fit stuff, but not solvent weld PVC. There's CIBSE and BPF guidance about it, but I think YT probably won't let me post a link.
Those old cylinders look like a nightmare. I redid my hot water systems not too long ago and was told fitting a valve on the hot water out is a big no no. Seen it done hundreds of times on new builds. Meant to remove the handles of any I see now.

Brings back some bad memories. I did one three years ago and never again. Weirdly one day after install I get called to a different property with same tank issues. Don’t even bother to loosen the immersions. The copper will have had 40 years of hot suppers.

Not is a pressure relief pipe and will carry hot water, so not allowed under regs to go into plastic guttering. Hence why the pipework had to be copper👍🏼👍🏼

Had to test the immersion heater on one job as part of eicr the cupboard was about ten foot deep the owner had built shelves in front dont envy the plumbers job when that lets go good work mark

Was quoted around £1500 to replace my system with pressurized cylinder. Ended up just catching the end of the green homes scheme (where you only paid a third of the cost of a "green" system) we ended up with solar thermal all installed and passed off for total cost to us of around £1850 (including 210L cylinder) couldn't say no... pleased we did :) PS love your videos...

Great video Mark, installation much better now, glad to see you call it a day on day 1 after the fight😂 it’s the best thing to do. I do the same on nightmare jobs, I find if you continue you haven’t got the right head on and either make things worse or make silly mistakes. 👌👍

if you come across this situation in the future I would remove the architrave and door frame then refit on completion,im sure plumbers used to fit tank before the chippy fitted the door and frame

Elson tanks always had a bad attitude. I was taking one out with a mate and he touched the drain tap which dissolved as it wasn't DZ. He stuck his thumb in the hole to stop the flood whilst I ran to get a bung from the van. We had a laugh eventually, but it wasn't funny when it happened, it was total panic 😂

If it’s a pressure system it sounds like it’s due a service, could be the expansion or the filters

I done a few of those elsons. Drain down always iffy. Had one where the leak had saturated the insulation, so was heavy once out. Absolute mare. Had a apprentice and it was his first day. Didnt see him again.

Hi Mark. I believe these tanks are stainless . Does the installation have any sacrificial ANODE protection ? If so , how does this get checked ? Rgds Don.
Elysons are the worst. One I had to take out by reciprocating saw the thing in half. Had a elyson wall hung that was 50% limescale and wouldn't drain was a pain to get off the wall, had to walk it down 3 flights of stairs to turn it upside down in the car park to remove the water. I feel your pain in this video
