When the elephant stopped moving and stopped flapping its ears it means that the animal was cautious and felt uncomfortable.
Well he deserves it. Can't he see that the elephant is a slave. It was taken from it's mother at a very tender age. Chained and forced to give rides to stupid tourists for very little food and probable a beating from its mahout later on in the day.
