    Thanks Mike, hi from the UK! Really clear explanation 🙂 I came across your video after searching for SmartThings. I'm just starting out and have a bunch of WiFi plugs and striplights, but would like to do more with automations and sensors. I keep holding off from getting a SmartThings due to the lack of sensors available and thinking device handlers, etc. might be a bit beyond me. But I like your comment about "just buy one"... I think you've convinced me!

    • @MichaelHooo

      Hey Ben, thanks for the comment! Motion sensors definitely make for a more complex and fun smart home...when they work, haha. I have heard a lot of great things about the SmartThing sensors, but because of the change in hardware, I have only been using sensors from other brands like Zooz and Ecolink-I have had to use one device handler for the Zooz 4-in-1, which I am still trying to get to work properly, at the moment. I would also add that using webcoRE (platform for building automations in addition to the SmartThings app) for automations will really improve, what you can only otherwise do using the SmartThings app. My next video will be automating my bathroom lights, so I really hope it can help answer some questions you might have!

    Thanks, Mike. A very useful and straightforward video. I'm just about to take the plunge into the smart home world and have decided to go with Smartthings, actually will probably buy the Aeotec hub which I think I'm right in saying is effectively the same thing and currently available in the UK. Will be interested to follow your progress. Thank again.

    Great video! Just doing some research on what hub to invest in when I'm gonna smarten up my home. Pretty sure I'll be using zigbee devices for the most part. Would love to have a good reliable app to control them with and the possibility to control them with my Google home/nest mini speaker. Thinking smartthings might be the way to go.

    • @MichaelHooo
      @MichaelHooo  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Eirik, thanks for the comment. Based on what your described, SmartThings definitely works. You can pair to a myriad of Zigbee devices and you can definitely use google assistant to control your devices; for example, as I am typing this response, I just told my google home mini to turn off a lamp in my room that is connected to a Zooz double plug via the SmartThings hub. Best!

    Hi from Denmark. Super cool and simple video with a great tempo. Im looking foreward to your upcoming videos :)
    I also came across your video after searching for SmartThings. I'm just starting out and are very new to the SMART HOME world. I'm really interested in automations and sensors that works perfectly with the Samsung SmartThings. So the list of devices you show (timecode 4:55) is very much appreciated. Keep up the good work a please show more about cool automations and sensors compatible with SmartThings :)

      Thank you Peter! Definitely stay tuned; some devices, I have learned, do not "work perfectly" as I would have imagined. Couple examples would be my Arlo doorbell, when someone rings it and it goes straight to my phone, and setting up a custom device handler for the Zooz 4-in-1 sensor, which at the moment still does not work properly. Best!

    Hey there, i'm currently working on a university project and i wanted to understand how the device actually stores and transfers information, for example my project is about notifying people when devices have been turned on, lets say the device(tv) is turned on, how would the hub process this information and send it to an app which then sends a notification to the person? is there a certain device internally in the hub that is needed e.g. a communication ways device?
    Also wanted to say that this was a great video and it really helped me understand about all the processing methods, thank you.

    • @MichaelHooo
      @MichaelHooo  3 роки тому

      Thanks Abdellah! Here is my understanding using your example; when the TV connected to the hub turns on, a signal from the TV is sent to the hub which then sends it through your router/modem/internet to a remote cloud location with a physical server that processes the signal to do x, y, z. In this case, when the TV turns on, a notification will be sent to you phone by sending a signal from the server back to your router/modem/internet to your phone connected to it. Similar to a wireless card adapter that would allow your devices to communicate with WiFi networks, there is a similar Zigbee/Z-wave adapter that is needed to allow the hub and other devices to communicate, but I do not know anything beyond its existence, e.g. name, material, technical specifications, etc.

    Hello, Thanks for the nice video. I have a question: Can i use my Samsung SmartThings with my Sonoff Zigbee Mini local, that means when i have internet probleme, are they still going to work?

    • @MichaelHooo
      @MichaelHooo  3 роки тому

      Hi Edvin, I do not know from personal experience, but it sounds like the solution is a little involved with a custom app and device handler: www.reddit.com/r/SmartThings/comments/ljc6cu/how_to_connect_sonoff_zigbee_mini_to_smartthings/. If you have internet problems, you will not be able to control the device through SmartThings, because although the devices are connected via Zigbee, the hub connected to our Sonoff Mini is controlled through the cloud which requires internet connection. Consider using a local hub for local control without internet/cloud dependence.

    Hi! I currently own a bunch of hue lights, a logitech harmony hub with an harmony elite, some logitech pop buttons, a roborock vaccum. I plan to get some ikea fyrtur blinds along with some netatmo thermostat in the near future. Do you think smartthings would be a good way to make all theses devices communicate with each other? Great video by the way, very self explanatory.

      Thank Greg! I am not certain from my own experience, but after googling compatibility of your mentioned devices with SmartThings; it appears that people have had success connecting those devices to their SmartThings hub using various custom solutions-see links below for more details:

    I'm debating going to smartthings as im running Home assistant right now but cannot get it to unlock or lock my yale assure lock. I wanted to see with your lock do you have the ability to unlock and lock it and provide user codes ?

    • @MichaelHooo
      @MichaelHooo  3 роки тому

      Hi MicroDweller, great question. I currently use the Schlage Z-Wave Plus Smart Deadbolt with my SmartThings app and I am only able to lock and unlock the door and check the battery life; however, when I first installed this lock, a SmartThings representative, who was helping me with the installation, told me they used to have a device handler that would allow users to create and delete codes on the SmartThings app, but they had to take it down and are working on get it back. The quickest way to know for sure would be to reach out to either Home Assistant or SmartThings support; but if I find out, I will let you know.

    Hello Mike. I watched many UA-cam movies and read many article, but I didn't get a straight answer to my problem. Here is the context. I have many LED bulbs Calex (Tuya platform. Works with Smart Life) which work great in different Google Home routines, voice or time triggered. Now I want to make more complex automations, like motion sensors triggered or door/window contact triggered. Therefore I bought a Sonoff Zigbee bridge, motion sensors, door switch and button, but I have no chance to command the LED bulbs, because Google Home and Smartthings apps only see the door switch. My question is: can I connect the Sonoff sensors directly to the Aeotec hub and manage them within the application? Thank you.

    • @MichaelHooo
      @MichaelHooo  3 роки тому

      Hi Dan, I am not sure because I have not tested a Sonoff device with the SmartThings hub, but based on what I have read online about Sonoff devices, it should be compatible with the SmartThings hub. Assuming the Sonoff devices you mentioned, i.e. motion sensor, door switch, and button, are connected successfully to the Sonoff Zigbee bridge you bought, you should be able to control them using the SmartThings app, just be warned that the control may be more limited compared to what you can do with the Sonoff app. For example, with my ecobee thermostat, I have a lot more control using the ecobee app compared to the SmartThings app that leverages the Arlo app-I can still control turning on off and setting temperatures on my thermostat, but I lose abilities like setting a "smart schedule" or "comfort settings"-hope this helps.

    is there anyway to integrate a bulb, which is not zigbee or z Wave with the hub? I just purchased 10 (Nedis) bulbs, which were cheap but they either have any of those systems... They work with smart life, but I am unable to integrate them on the smartthings app... Thanks !!!

    • @MichaelHooo
      @MichaelHooo  3 роки тому

      Hi Bruno, the SmartThings hub can also connect to smart home devices with WiFi connection, in addition to Zigbee and Z-Wave. What problems did you run into while trying to integrate them with the SmartThings app? When I go into my SmartThings app and I add a new device and search for "Smart Life" I see the integration option for "Smart Life - > Lighting" which should work with your Nedis bulbs-let me know if this helps.

    • @brunoreinoso
      @brunoreinoso 3 роки тому

      @@MichaelHooo I wanted to start with the smart home concept, but apparently i bought the wrong bulbs... do you know the brand "Nedis"? I'm not able to connect them, if you could help me i would be very thankful, since I puchased 10 of them😪 (btw I'm based in Germany)

    • @MichaelHooo
      @MichaelHooo  3 роки тому

      @@brunoreinoso I do not know the brand "Nedis", but based on the SmartThings app I did not see a Nedis light bulb integration; however, I did see a Smart Life one, so if your bulbs are already connected to Smart Life, you might be able to still control them by using SmartThings which will access the Nedis bulbs via Smart Life. If this does not work, I would maybe look at custom device handlers or into new SmartThings compatible light bulbs.
