    I shot this parade in Hubbardston, MA on Memorial Day 2022 for stock footage with my Sony Z280 ENG camera and Sachtler Aktiv8/Flowtech75 tripod. Hubbardston is a very small town so the parade lasted less than 30 minutes. Because I knew that I would have no time to change lenses, it was important for me to use a highly flexible camera that would allow me to get a variety of shots. The Z280 was the perfect choice with it's 17x zoom lens. I was able to quickly get wide, close-up, and medium shots that would have been impossible with many other cameras and lenses.
    Sony Z280 Master Class: vimeo.com/onde...
    As an experiment, I used Auto-Focus (with custom settings) for most of the parade, plus a customized version of Auto-ND for exposure. I also shot with a custom Scene File that I made for the Z280 and then further graded it in DaVinci Resolve to give it "nostalgic" feel with warmer sepia tones and a little bit of glow on the highlights -- including allowing some highlights blow out.
    The CODEC that I used was XAVC-I @ 59.94p. I then converted the footage in post to 23.98p, which gave me a 2.5x slow-motion look. Normally I would shoot in 23.98 and use S&Q Motion to capture slow-motion @ 60 fps, but I can't record sound when using S&Q Motion. In this case I wanted to capture the sounds of the parade in case I wanted to use it later in post.

    Doug, I just stumbled across your channel and I’ve got to say, your reels contain plots. They’re filmed so wonderfully and cohesively. Everything from the colors to composition just further cements my eyes to the screen. Very well done. I don’t care what you post, I’m here for it all. Subscribed.

    It's just the media cards that holds it back for me.

    • @DougJensenVortexMedia
      @DougJensenVortexMedia  2 роки тому

      Yes, the SxS cards are a more expensive at first, but they offer 100% reliabilty, peace of mind, and once you buy a few cards you'll never have to buy media again. I haven't bought any new cards in years. There are also SD card adapters you can get that can be used with some of the camera's CODECs and frame-rates. It's a good solution for interviews, stage performances, events, press conferences, etc. where you have to record for a really long time, but you don't need slow-motion and there is no advantage to using the high-end codecs.

    Nice work as usual Doug. Question: does the z280 have the new S-Cinetone color profile as an option?

    • @DougJensenVortexMedia
      @DougJensenVortexMedia  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you Matthew. The Z280 does not have S-Cinetone, but it does have enough Paint Menu options that someone could create a very similar look on their camera. In fact, I experimented with that idea a few weeks ago and was able to get what I think is a pretty good match between my Z280 and S-Cinetone on my FX6. However, I don't really don't care for the look of S-Cinetone so I won't be using that scene file on my Z280 unless I have to match both cameras on a shoot. My Z280 looks better than S-Cinetone when I shoot with the Scene Files I talk about in my master class.

    This looks good! I need to replace my venerable XF300...which is the camcorder to go nowadays? I have a C100 mk2 and a Sony FX30 but I need a camcorder...is this Z280 much better than the Canon XF605? Thanks

      I've never used a XF605, but I did rent a XF705 last summer to compare it head to head with the Z280. The verdict was that the Z280 was still the better camera. Picture quality was similar, but the Z280 has a better lens, features, functions, specifications, audio accessories, etc. Not even close.

I'm amazed that this Sony is still the better camcorder- any dealbreakers? I know you tweaked the pic a bit and it looks fantastic! Thanks- I have tried one or two of your courses...even on DVD!! @@DougJensenVortexMedia Interesting. I've been co sideline trading in my FX9 for one. I do mainly documentary work, but the FX9 is super cumbersome and having a nice zoom range would be great. Also, it is still very possible to get a shallow dof with the 280 if you shoot at f1.9 and zoom in a bit for interviews.
      I know they are different cameras for different jobs and itd be ideal to own both, but if you could only pick one camera, which one would you prefer? Z280 or FX9?

    • @DougJensenVortexMedia

      @@SuperPhunThyme100 It is very hard to recommend one camera over another when they are such different types of cameras. It's like choosing a SUV or a sports car. Both of them might be very good vehicles, but suited for entirely different types of driving. First of all, I'd rather have an FX6 than then FX9. So, if I had to choose between my FX6 or Z280, it would be a very difficult decision. But if my main use was documentaries, then I'd rather have the Z280.

    Look at 1:11, their arms in shadow are extremely grainy. Is this a codec rendering artifact or a low bitrate one? Other than that, the look overall is good, technicolor vibrant colours.

    • @DougJensenVortexMedia

      @@DougJensenVortexMedia OK, also since you are here, is there a way the camera can record externally?
      And if yes is it a full signal (so 4:4:4 unobstructed signal output)?
      I love the prism cameras, I own the very last prosumer camera with 3cmos, the panasonic HC-X920, I am a little mad most companies abandoned the prism technology and only sony does them now. But they seem to make them into the professional range only.
      I'd absolutely kill to have a prosumer camcorder for 4K 3cmos camera (even if i was only 30p) because the 3cmos cameras are the only cameras capable of true vibrant colors.

    • @DougJensenVortexMedia
      @DougJensenVortexMedia  2 роки тому

      @@aryaprincess2479 It's great to hear your enthusiasm for 3-chip cameras. Yes, it is possible to use an external 12G SDI recorder to capture the Z280's full-blown 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 output. However, there won't really be any benefit to doing so because camera can record those exact same specifications internally. Also, when you record internally, you eliminate the expense and hassle of dragging around a recorder, tethering it to the camera, powering it, etc. You are also able to use Sony's excellent XAVC-I codec internally, where an external recorder would probably require the use of the much more inefficient ProRes codec. XAVC-I is just as good at ProRes at about 1/3 the file size.

    • @aryaprincess2479
      @aryaprincess2479 2 роки тому

      @@DougJensenVortexMedia Yes, if it sends a 4:2:2 signal then there is nothing beneficial to it.
      I also read that since the sub pixels are real and there is no interpolation there needs to be less computation for that part and since the RBG color of the pixel is real any algorithm that decides to compress makes a far better compressions and better decisions, no moire noise, no chromatic aberration and thus the 4:2:2 compression of a prism camera is better than a 4:2:2 of a bayer sensor.
      I wonder why the PXW-Z750 doesn't have the 600Mb/s option too, only 300Mb/s, I know it has a bigger sensor and theoretically better image, but the highest bitrate it offers is not as high as the 280.

    • @DougJensenVortexMedia
      @DougJensenVortexMedia  2 роки тому

      @@aryaprincess2479 I think you have wrong information about the Z750. The Z750 has all the codecs found on the Z280, including XAVC-I 60p (600 Mbps) -- plus a few more codecs not found on the Z280. Whatever the Z280 can do, the Z750 can match or do a little better.

      Nope, not the CODEC. The 4K XAVC-I 10-bit 4:2:2 recording format is the same one used in all of Sony's high-end cameras. You'd have to got o a Venice to get better. If you don't like the look of the video, that is fine. I graded it in Resolve to purposely give it a different look that I think works for the subject matter and my intended stock footage market. @@petrub27 Yes, I misunderstood. You are exactly right. The codec when I exported would certainly introduce some image degradation. I exported this video from Premiere as H.264 @ 50Mbps. That should be good enough for normal 4K, but maybe the vignetting and other effects I added don't hold up as well. I'm traveling and don't have the montiors and tools needed to dig deeper. few things, first its a quite small sensor to be exactly 3 chip 1.2 sensor. its close to a 1 chip sensor size as a m4/3 sensor. so the dynamic range not that high because its still a 1/2 inch sensor (but has 3 ) its keeps the cropfactor of a 1/2 sensor so the DoF is not shallow like a super 35 or full frame sensor. but it has better do the 3 chip sensors it has 4x more blue and red channels. the collors are technical better. Doug jensen is not a profesional collor greader i dont say hes bad, he still 20x better then me at greading fotage. but he doesn't grade images like one that does this as his fulltime job,
