Black River is one of the oldest European towns in the island of Jamaica, being shown on John Sellers' 1685 map. It was designed by the Leyden brothers of England, three wealthy men who were substantial land proprietors in the area.[2]
In 1773 Black River replaced Lacovia, 19 miles to the north-east, as the capital of St. Elizabeth.[2] Soon after it became the main commercial, economic and transshipment centre of the parish.[2] By the early 1900s, it was second only to Kingston in economic importance on the island.[2]
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Black River was a busy seaport for the lucrative logwood trade and for exports of rum, pimento and cattle skins from the nearby Holland, Vineyard, and Fullerswood plantations.[2]
Into the early 19th century, slaves from Africa and other Caribbean islands were landed here and sold at auction at Farquharson Wharf (originally Town Wharf). This wharf still stands.[2] In 2007, the United Kingdom celebrated the 200th anniversary of the Slave Trade Act 1807, which ended the African slave trade in its colonies.
A monument was installed at Black River in 2007 to memorialize the slaves killed in the Zong massacre of 1781. More than 132 slaves were thrown overboard at sea from the Zong. They were sacrificed by the crew purportedly to save the remainder and the crew because of a shortage of water on board.[3] The Zong finally landed at Black River. Its owners later sued for insurance claims for the slaves who had been killed, and the case was litigated in 1783 in Britain. The court rejected the owners' claim, as it was shown that the crew had made navigation errors that kept the ship at sea and threatened its supplies. Abolitionists publicized it, and the case became a catalyst for continuing efforts to abolish slavery. Britain abolished slavery in its empire in 1833.

Thanks for the tour. I love the sleepy atmosphere of Blackriver and the old buildings which gives it its charm. Maybe the roads need resurfacing and a few buildings renovated but let's not try to change it to much.

Good morning, fire Reid have a blessing time 😊from UK 🇬🇧 🙏 🙌.
I am with you Fire Reid. As I said before the MP Floyd Green, the Government and Black River Parish Council should invest money with regards to the infrastructure, it requires a brand new bridge and the building needs total renovation and new ones being build. It requires serious investments hence creating jobs for the inhabitants of St Elizabeth.
They've recently stated that there are plans for new buildings since the highway expansion that will take place in St.Elizabeth is expected to run through Hodges. They have stated though, that given the status of many of the old buildings as historically protected that it makes it hard to demolish them or do much else. However, rather than demolish they could renovate these old buildings and make some of them museums for people to pay to tour.
My Father Santos, was born in Bigwoods..he loved his parish...nice ppl come from St.Bess...& my cousin is a nurse at the Hospital..love St.Bess.. the town...lets all.work together to improve the hospital & the town, the schools...❤

I am surprised at the amount of litter and the general state of dereliction in Black River Town a place I know very well. The people doesn’t have to wait for the government to star improving the area. The fish market countdown with a good scrubbing down with bleach and disinfectant.
Hi Reid, thanks for showing B.R.

Thank you for showcasing our town it might not be as 'some people ' would like but it's quite, comfortable peaceful and growing everyday and crime is very low, as time goes by we'll get to where we need to be.

The town needs sprucing up a lot. Guess the old buildings gives it a certain charm but a little paint here and there would make a world of difference.

Lot of work put in by me who subcontracted the steel work for the fire station and aims school and supervisor at the black river hospital gate also at locovia police station
Could not grow before because no land was available. Hendricks and Company would not release the land. High Street was built on reclaimed land.
The town is now growing.
The issue of available lands also affected other towns like Old Harbour.
The Britush would say Black River on Black,
Bewcastle upon Tyne
Kinston Upon Hull
Tyneside
Merseydside
What about Blackside?
Big up black river
blessings up
Good video!!! I love love Black River and that is why I am developing townhomes and condos for sale, and we owner finance it for our buyers. Come and check us out!!
Where are those been build
Nice place but i have never been there,
thanks for watching Beverly one love one ❤
I think the Town need to relocate, to the common between the primary school and the courthouse. That Common goes back to Lovers Lane in New Town and Exchange Drive. The Common is owned by two families but they were married to each other. Hence it’s probably owned by one family now. If the government buy the land and put the Town in the Common. Then a Ring Road around the Town, that would put Black River back on the map. The current Town is too clustered, there are no parking space for shoppers, except people shop at Intown.
Don't hold your breath, they are a dead stock. No creativity among them, and the editors with the money just don't care. What they need to do is sellout and leave town. I was there on vacation and couldn't even find a nice place to have breakfast. Take a look at Junction!
@@jlau979
Yea, I’m from Black River, hence I know the history well. The rich families in Black River didn’t even want outsides passing through Black River. That’s why they build the by pass up by Island Pond (Hodges to Brompton). That’s the route the Southern Coastal Highway, will take now. Black River current Town, should be a Tourist walk through area. The Centre should be in the Common.
I’ll be doing a series of videos on my UA-cam channel, about having an Airport in St. Elizabeth. Starting this week👍🏾.
Why Black River needs to be relocated? Why the town cannot be expanded and also rehabilitated? The town should be rehabilitated with the historical buildings repurposed, keeping the historical aspect of the town intact. I guess we are waiting for the Chinese to come in, and do the heavy lifting, so that we can curse them out. Jamaicans believe that all these things must be done by the government. Private people can do it too, it is not only the Chinese and the government of Jamaica we should expect to do it. Don't get me wrong successive governments dropped the ball on this and Jamaica in general. Blessings to you Fire Reid. You are always on the job, my friend

It’s more of an expansion rather than a relocation I’m referring to. Or changing the centre of the shopping area to another part of the Town. Where the heart of the Town is now cannot be expanded, because it’s hedged in on one side by the River and on another side by the sea. I’m in Black River, two months out the year for the past several years and I can see the struggle with the vehicles. A lot of people are avoiding Black River Town now. A lot of other Towns in the parish are overtaking Black River Town now. Santa Cruz is well ahead, Junction has already overtaking us and other Towns soon overtake us as well. We need some changes and some improvements in Black River or Hodges, Brompton and others will overtake us as well.
I was born in that hospital
Were they giving away blue, and yellow or gold paint in Black River?
maybe
What happen to Port of Call guess house

Black River Sea is still, it has none to very little waves, also don't think it has a beach either, true or false Fire Read.
false
@@FireReid where is the beach?
Tell me why in God's creation, did they paint the hospital in yellow and brown? there is no kind of tranquility about this place. come on Black River people!
Weeeeeellll ! Yellow IS a "feel good, happy color" LOL 🇯🇲✝️
Black River was not my favorite town when I lived in Jamaica, a bit borig
