Early 2000 I had a 5 year military assignment in NATO. During a 3 week course at a military base in Italy (we were all wearing uniforms) I was approached by 2 americans attending the same course as me. They asked if they could help me escape to USA so I did not have to live in a socialist/communist country. When I very confused tried to explain that I was quite happy living in Norway their response was even more disturbing. They asked if my refusal to escape was because my relatives in Norway was being held in prison and would be executed if I did not return. It still confuses me to this day why a country would send dumb dumbs like that to represent their country in uniform.

Oh, I've heard worse. I ilive in a very small community (around 80 people) in the innermost part of a fjord in Northern Norway. There is not a lot of Americans coming here, but it happens. Here's a few quotes of things I've heard from them personally over 20+ years: - Where's the nearest subway station, I wanna go to your university - Where are all the polar bears? I wanna shoot one, my brother dared me to do so. - When are you going on a whate hune? Can I join? - You're not a Norwegian, you're not blonde. - We're in Sami territory, why aren't you dressed as one? (No Sami here at all...) - How can I get back to Europe? - (Watching my 18 years old nephew having a beer with me, and asks his age). Why isn't anyone calling the police? - Where can we meet real vikings? Me: the viking age ended almost 1000 years ago. American: LIAR - are you hiding them in your basement? - Where can I buy a gun? Me: you can't. American: what is this shithole of a country? - and more... And btw, Norway being the capital of Sweden, that one is more common than you may think.
Was studying with an american exchange student back in university. A total gem of a girl, but I have to admit she wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. I remember m The first day when I met her. We were having a get-to-know-each-other-party between all students and I asked her if she had any expectations for her time here and she said, and I quote, "I honestly don't know where to start. I never imagined I would be able to visit Swedens largest capital". Not THE capital of sweden, which was bad enough. She believed Norway was the biggest, meaning apparently Sweden have several capitals. It took me over an hour to prove to her that 1. Sweden only has one capital, just as any other country in the world... 2. Norway is not Swedens capital 3. And no, Norway is not even a city of sweden, but a whole separate and independent country of it's own.

Norwegian here. The Northern Lights/Midnight sun made me remember two stories I've been told from friends working as receptionists at hotels in northern Norway. One of them was approached by middle-aged American woman that was very unhappy when she asked when the Midnight sun would rise and was informed that it's the regular sun not setting. So no midnight sun sunrise to see. The other had an American couple in middle of the winter asking for the midnight sun. My friend was like "you mean the northern lights, right? Aurora Borealis?". No, they wanted to see the midnight sun and had read online that the best time of the year to see it was summer. So they traveled to Norway when it's summer in the Southern Hemisphere. They hadn't thought about the opposite seasons of there northern and Southern Hemisphere. Fortunately a couple of nights of stunning northern lights seemed to do the trick and they were very happy when they checked out, despite the lack of midnight sun.
I have to comment here as a Canadian living in Edmonton,Alberta, we had aurora this summer which really surprised me because it actually happened in the summer.
The polar bear thing and the capital of sweden have come up way too many times in my life 😂 I also remember a few years ago after frozen 2 came out (based on norwegian nature and sami cultures) someone "fixed" the sami characters because they were so tired of the whitewashing of native cultures. They made them dark skinned with dark textured hair, and it went viral
Well Schweden took Bohuslän, Jämtland and Härjedalen, the only arable land of Norway, and let those Viking tribes use the rest as a reservation! And Schweden lies next to Austria, where the Australians lives. So its imposible for polar bears to live there, its rather kangaroos on the streets!🤣
Honestly, I don't think we have anything in Norway that you don't have somewhere in the US. The difference is that in Norway it's spread over a much smaller area.
"Do you live in actual houses or tree huts?" I think I would have replied: "Do all Americans live in actual houses or in tepees?" ^^ And BTW ... No one build taller buildings than the Americans? Abu Dhabi any one? It HAS been a year or two since the US held THAT record! ^^

_"I know you get the food faster in a drive-in with or without a dog anyway"_ ??? Do you mean, "I know you get the food faster in a drive-in (as opposed to another place)"? I'm so confused by that sentence 😅😅
Hmm that one about midway through about walking upto a sales window to buy being confusing, just makes me wonder if Americans will eventually evolve into a legless population, and I don't mean "pisssed".
Polar bears don't generally wander around the streets of Longyearbyen in Svalbard. They're way too dangerous to be allowed to do that. Polar bears (around 3000) do habitate the wilderness in Svalbard. Therefore you need to bring a gun when traveling into the wilderness. However, polar bears can move to areas with humans like camps, tents, huts and even the outskirts of Longyearbyen. The bears are looking for food. So you need guns even close to your home. You can compare this with grizzly bears in USA. They're not living in the streets of US cities, but you might encounter one occasionally in the outskirts.
12:03 My favorite thing to ask people that think they know Norway is what is "Janteloven"? For the people that never have heard of it before, its basically how we see ourselves and with others. In Norway we learn that "your not important, you shall not believe you're better than others and so on..." There for saying "I am Norwegian, my great grandma was" is something a real Norwegian would never say. And we know you're not real.
That one guy was probably thinking of Nigerians 😂 Not to say he's right about Nigerians either! But then the skin, height, and geographic location would make more sense 🙈
To be self critical: In some moments i thought to myself (to who else should i thought to? Also a little dumb): Do i watch this videos, maybe just to feel a bit better, than the US Americans? Could be, but i don't think so. Maybe i even know more about the USA than some people there... or maybe most. Now i feel better! Thanks for asking, not asking! 🤣😂😜 Also a nice story: A US guy visited Hamburg/Gemany (not that one near Scranton/USA!), and asked me: "How does it come, that u speak english so well? I thought french people didn't like to speak english!", i answered: "I was born and raised in Hamburg, i am not french.", "that can not be, u have a french name, so u r french!" At least i showed him my Id card to proof that i am german. U can guess what he said? "Wow nice fake ID card. I still claim that u r french!"🤨
I sat on a plane to Minnapolis, and a lady wondered why I fired up an imported (smuggled) Norwegian smoke called Red Prince, and I told her American sigs suck. And that was the end of that conversation. she had the ugliest jeans I have ever seen ;)
The Norwegians were the original vikings. How come I have never seen "the dumbest things a Canadian has ever said about America" or about anywhere else for that matter? I am Canadian and have met some dumb Canadians, so they do exist, but have never found anything like "the dumbest things Americans have said" about anything. If anyone has a link for something like that, please let me know.
(S): Let's be honest. The good American aunt knew about the Northern Lights and midnight sun. I, as a Swedish resident in the north, have never even thought "when can I see the Northern Lights". OK, that midnight sun thing you/I can't avoid knowing. But how will she know. Give the aunt credit for asking. She does not represent 'stupid' Americans. Just a curious, willing to learn, older lady.
the question "did norwegians have the same problem with vikings and americans and native americans?" Was weird because weren't norwegians a part of vikings?
I think a lot of U.S. Americans (not all) have delusions of grandeur their whole life or are accustomed to this mindset because USA USA and all that. Then they travel, and suddenly feel small, and must go around talking to natives like they know everything and know it better than themselves. It's just dissonance, really. Well that, AND a lack of education or any form of attempt at self-improvement... Again, these are *NOT* representative of a typical U.S. American (yes this is the proper term outside of USA, since "American" is non-descriptive beyond the entire New World) and most U.S. citizens are nice and friendly and outgoing. And likewise, considering the foundationless grandeur and boasting demeanour of some of these, there's absolutely _no_ reason for anyone to try and defend it, nor is there any reason for someone from USA that is at least somewhat cognizant to feel offended.
I'm halfway through and I just want to say, USA didn't "take" much from Native Americans, in their defense: When USA was established, there wasn't many Native reserves left, and initially it wasn't like the Native Americans was sprawled across EVERYWHERE at this massive continent; they were nomadic. It's rather that "modern" borders had to be set up of sorts, during and after the colonialist Era. I mean, still, it's horrible by today's standards, but it's often said without context or understanding, even from Northern Americans themselves. What they did to Mexico was arguably worse, however Mexico/Spain was in turn worse than that again, in these areas... If someone from elsewhere in the world should complain about USA and its treatment of natives, they should rationally mention Peru, Colombia, Mexico or Spain instead. Way, way, WAY worse. Not everything was exactly planned like that (disease has most of the fault), but it was in practice literally genocide in the millions. And most other nations in "the new world" has a similar story, just to varying degrees.
In the army I met quite a few americans - and their knowlege of Norway is minimal. And few of them has any idea og what is socialist, social democrasy and so on. Frankly - what politics concerns, the american shoollsystem really sucks.
The skiteam one... Not the dumbest, we are great at skiing, mostly. Allthouygh some unlucky kids don't have the resources or interest to ski, it is not like 50 years ago. This winter there was a snowdump that came very sudden so the buses couldn't hamndle it. I saw more than 10 people skiing in the street and I envied them, because they were the only ones that got anywhere
and fun fact is that northern lights must be seen in winter, and midnight sun in the summer. So you would at least need two trips to nothern parts of Norway to see both things.

To be fair, if an american said they were from insert small city in a less populated state, i wouldnt fucking know 90% of them, so to expect an american to know a small city in europe is insane.
To be fair i think i would secretly be wondering about polar bears lol... I am glad its americans asking that question lol. But i love the skiing question lol
If Americans had known how many social democracies there are in Europe, they would never have a good night's sleep again - cuz social democracies are so very... dangerous...? 🤦🥴

Maybe there is a thing about Americans not being that concerned with details either? Mr Walker here, constantly regurgitates what he is reading wrongly!
The sami has status as «urfolk» as deceided by norwegian goverment. The samis came from east of the ural mountains, while at the same time germanic tribes started populating Norway. However the samis are a minorty in Norway with their own culture, language and ways of life different to the average norwegian. The idea is to protect the samis from the majority so that they are less likely to be be discriminated by the majority. So the american claim that the vikings (here: norse-germanic) were native is as correct as claiming that the samis are native. The only differences are that what people referred to as viking is a boring white norwegian today, while some of the samis live a life similar to what they did hundreds of years ago.

You mean, there are three countries besides America?
The one about Vikings and Native Americans I heard the first time in the 90s - probably more of an urban legend.
The polar bear thing and the capital of sweden have come up way too many times in my life 😂
I also remember a few years ago after frozen 2 came out (based on norwegian nature and sami cultures) someone "fixed" the sami characters because they were so tired of the whitewashing of native cultures.
………..
I'm 7% Viking and I demand retribution for what the Norwegians did to my people!😠
😂
😂😅😊
Honestly, I don't think we have anything in Norway that you don't have somewhere in the US. The difference is that in Norway it's spread over a much smaller area.
Yes, especially if we include Alaska. That’s “Norway” on steroids.
@@oh515 Your comment seems to imply that you can find it even without including Alaska. Where do you find the midnight sun in USA outside of Alaska?
we don't have kfc
@@simenkolas9373 FUCK! Don't remind me! :D
@@simenkolas9373 that was in reverse of what the comment was tho
"Do you live in actual houses or tree huts?"
I think I would have replied: "Do all Americans live in actual houses or in tepees?" ^^
And BTW ... No one build taller buildings than the Americans? Abu Dhabi any one? It HAS been a year or two since the US held THAT record! ^^
That professor, did he get his degree through mail order or something? The tallest building in the world is surely The Burj Khalifa in Dubai? 😅
The polar bears in our streets one is a classic. I've also been asked if we live in igloos and ride reindeer to school/work/wherever.
8:43 Once walked my dog and wanted to buy a burger at the same time, I went through the drive-in. it went perfectly and they give my dog one ice cream. and I know you get the food faster in a drive-in with or without a dog anyway
_"I know you get the food faster in a drive-in with or without a dog anyway"_
???
Do you mean, "I know you get the food faster in a drive-in (as opposed to another place)"? I'm so confused by that sentence 😅😅
When you use insurance for the welfare, it will be twice the price.
You need to pay the insurance companies and the hospitals.
Hmm that one about midway through about walking upto a sales window to buy being confusing, just makes me wonder if Americans will eventually evolve into a legless population, and I don't mean "pisssed".
Polar bears DO wander around in the streets i Norway.
They live in Svalbard which is Norwegian.
Yea but it's about as accurate as saying polar bears wander the streets in USA.
They wander around far away from any streets.
Do polar bears wander around in the streets? Only rarely in the 4 northernmost towns in the world, Пирамида, Ny Ålesund, Баренцбург, and Longyearbyen.
That one guy was probably thinking of Nigerians 😂
Not to say he's right about Nigerians either! But then the skin, height, and geographic location would make more sense 🙈
You don't HAVE TO live amongst those people. You CAN move. To Norway for example. 😉
Husk at vi ser på de verste skrekkeksemplene da.
We have drive throughs in norway but as long as you don't interrupt any cars then they will be fine with it lol
I knew a guy from USA who tought Norway was in North America 😂Scandinavia too was part of North America
Isn’t Norway the capital of Sweden? is the most common question I’ve heard! 😂😂😂
I worked for a few years in a store, and every day I went too work I hoped I could meet one of these people. Sadly never did:(
To be self critical: In some moments i thought to myself (to who else should i thought to?
Now is Utha in Michigan?
Not everybody keeps the map in their head.
I sat on a plane to Minnapolis, and a lady wondered why I fired up an imported (smuggled) Norwegian smoke called Red Prince, and I told her American sigs suck. And that was the end of that conversation. she had the ugliest jeans I have ever seen ;)
Northern lights are only in winter mostly. Midnight sun is in summer
To be fair to the person asking a Norwegianto join their ski team; we are known to be born with skis strapped to our feet 😂
8:40 this is so cringe it makes me wanna just idk pull the plug of myself aka die of cringeness ffs
15:36 i almost feel offended 😕
The Norwegians were the original vikings. How come I have never seen "the dumbest things a Canadian has ever said about America" or about anywhere else for that matter? I am Canadian and have met some dumb Canadians, so they do exist, but have never found anything like "the dumbest things Americans have said" about anything. If anyone has a link for something like that, please let me know.
(S):
Let's be honest.
(S): We still have problems with Vikings, or rather "Vikingarna" ua-cam.com/video/c-INCDvcSWQ/v-deo.html
the question "did norwegians have the same problem with vikings and americans and native americans?" Was weird because weren't norwegians a part of vikings?
Norwegians WERE the Vikings. Along with Swedes and Danes and so forth.
And they reached the present day Canada and USA a thousand years ago. Leiv Eiriksson et al
Im from Norway. Is that in Oklahoma? 😂
It’s so funny that the Americans here don’t seem to understand that vikings we’re Norwegian (and danish)
I'm halfway through and I just want to say, USA didn't "take" much from Native Americans, in their defense:
When USA was established, there wasn't many Native reserves left, and initially it wasn't like the Native Americans was sprawled across EVERYWHERE at this massive continent; they were nomadic.
Yes, Norway is in Africa...
18:30 now you know how I feel almost all videos
Or stay for at least half a year.
@@Quzinqa1122 yes, but you cannot do that on a tourist visum.
@@Quzinqa1122 It will probably be cheaper to have two trips as well.
getting quite bored of the NO WAY when I say Im from Norway
We have all run in to this silly Americans eather online or on real life.
Me and wife we walk up to a drivetrue and order burgers i york. That was no prob. The girl was like, thats the first time someone walk up here. But she smile and was very kind to us Norwegin walking idiots😅😅❤
Somebody told me a story about americans asking "When do they turn on the Northern Lights?" I am not sure if it is a true story, but some other comments make it seem more likely....hahah
To be fair, if an american said they were from insert small city in a less populated state, i wouldnt fucking know 90% of them, so to expect an american to know a small city in europe is insane.
Technically, it's called a "drive through" for a reason. Walking people can go inside and order. Cars can't. Logic really.
To be fair i think i would secretly be wondering about polar bears lol... I am glad its americans asking that question lol. But i love the skiing question lol
If Americans had known how many social democracies there are in Europe, they would never have a good night's sleep again - cuz social democracies are so very... dangerous...? 🤦🥴
A burger walk about 😅😅
"You can´t be Norwegian ..."
"You can´t be American ´cause you are not racist enough! Oh no, sorry, you are!"
-
BTW: There is nothing wrong if you don´t know anything. But to teach people in the wrong about their home country is - not nice.
As a swede I'm jelous that you focus on Norway :)
I was in Florida. Someone asked us where we were from. We answered Norway. No Where? Where is it? Was the response from the Americans.
It is not norweigan to walk up to a drive thru. Its super american to not give any alternative than to do so 😂
Easy to solve, if there are two of them. One walks towards the window while the other mimics the sound of a car engine.
I hate skiing. But I'm still pretty good at it.
you have oslo in usa to
The one whit the vikings..! 🤣😂
time has no meaning to americans it seems.
Because there is no racial similarity between the tenth and twenty-first populations, it confuses the poor things.
oh this has to be good.
See you next time. 👍 🇳🇴
Honestly, how are people from the US even able to survive? You have warning labels on every single thing?
Dom kan inte klockan och dom kan inte räkna 😅
Why is this American wearing headphones, while reading reddit? ;-)
I'm from The Norwegian Palm Coast, but live in Arendelle. Both are as far north as Juneau, Alaska, but the summers are as hot as an Californian winter
Dom vet inte ens var dom bor 🙏
Vær ikke vred på amerikanerne, thi de ved ikke bedre. 😏
they have a computer in their hands, walking around, use it.
Maybe there is a thing about Americans not being that concerned with details either? Mr Walker here, constantly regurgitates what he is reading wrongly!
"regurgitates"?
regurgitates wrongly?
Lefse is not bread.
NO: NORWEY IS NOT IN SWEDEN.
:( I like it better when you react to videos. Please, videos only :D
Not your fail pr gilt
Are im aloud to say de stupidest stori i ben told
i mean... do you need glasses? or can you just not read? that BK lady didnt say no, she had no idea how to react.......
Nigerians❤?
Do americans not have any perception of time? The vikings were not the native people of norway, the Sami are.
The Sami are no more native (less actually) than us Norwegians.
