  • Justin Dewey was one of three judges who sat on the bench during the Lizzie Borden trial of June 1893 in New Bedford. Dewey would also give the charge to the jury which held undertones of sympathy for Lizzie. Justin Dewey had three daughters at home in Great Barrington just a few years younger than Lizzie. He could not imagine his daughters committing paracide. His family, a large and distinguished one which included Admiral Dewey and Israel Dewey settled in the Great Barrington area and many are buried in Mahaiwe Cemetery on Rt. 7. The judge would build a house for his 3 girls in Great Barrington while he maintained his professional office in Springfield in later years and a residence as well. He died in 1900.
