The original game is the prototype of the entire genre, there were space combat and space trading games but nothing really pulled them together like Elite did.
Scott, EVERYTHING in this game was procedural, even the names, the entire galaxies, the descriptions.... It was amazing how much you could make with procedural generation, an entire world, solar system, universe....
Every few years I get back into OOLite for a while. I like to max out my passenger berths and shuttle people around. It feels more profitable than trading and less dangerous than pirate hunting, plus I can make up stories about the folks I'm taking on board and why they're crossing the galaxy.
When I began playing the game back in the eighties, it was best to journey backwards and forwards between Diso and Leesti, as this was a relatively safe crossing. The first goal was to save up for a pulse laser that would be placed on the rear - aft - of your ship. This allowed you to run away from attackers, while shooting at them and taking them out. Eventually, you could upgrade to a beam laser and at some point a military laser. This run and shoot tactic was perfect and it was only the dreaded Thargoid ships that could catch you out now and then. Docking was tricky and it also made life so easy if you could acquire a docking computer. In Oolite, there's a nice Fuel 'Injector' addition that is really helpful if you're outnumbered and in trouble. Here's a tip. Once you've done all of your purchasing and are equipped to begin your next journey, before you leave the station, save your game. That way, if you get killed, just reset the game by reloading your save. I can highly recommend this game.
Thanks for the video Scott. Really great game. It blew me away back when it was made. I remember playing it on my school's BBC computers, it seemed so advanced.
I agree. Even though I play Eve-Online, I have had Oolite on my Mac for years and play it now and again, which always makes me smile. The original Elite (which I never played) was the basis of almost all space games. Another game I have on an older Mac (won’t play on newer Macs … typical) is Escape Velocity Nova (again, based upon Elite). Matter-of-fact, Escape Velocity can be modified to the player’s preference, so one could create and/or download some very sophisticated variations via “plug-ins”, including one that was based upon Elite. Enjoyed the hell out of that plug-in. Sigh, it’s too bad Elite Dangerous no longer supports the Mac platform, but I guess I could download Windows and try it out. Sure looks interesting and would be a nice break from Eve on occasion.
I loved the original E.L.I.T.E on C=64.I was stationed overseas in 1984 with the military and had a lot of off duty time. Instead of going out drinking I would go back to my room and play the game for hours. You DEFINITELY needed a joystick.
I loved Elite as a kid. It was my first experience with video games on a PC. I still remember the docking computer music.... I just downloaded OOlite and cant wait to play....thanks for showing us this exists.
It's not time acceleration, in the original manual it is described as "a space-skip drive", and in oolite they've termed it a "torus drive", which is basically just a warp drive. The warp field is disrupted by other ships warp fields so it doesn't work when others are near.
I also started on the Amstrad CPC version of this. I found the supernova mission Scott mentioned, but because it was placed within a random system each time the only way to get away again was to have precognition (saved game) and buy a galactic hyperspace drive in advance, as the star was more than 3.5 light years from any other and had no fuel to sell at the station, leaving you otherwise stranded (the sun went nova about 30 seconds after launch, leaving no time to use fuel scoops).
+Warriorking1963 The way you say "every time I watch this video" almost makes me fall of my chair laughing because I'm imagining you every now and then going "oh go on then" and playing it just to see that moment haha
Blast from the Past... I first played Elite on my Commodore 64! I found this OOLIte game a few years ago for my Mac.. and enjoyed the novelty of re playing it. It really was a ground breaking as far as an idea for the game play! loved it! I always liked the radar system... how you turned and tracked another ship. very cool. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
I remember playing it on my C64...nights and nights spent before that old tv hauling goods between planets, defending against pirates and sometimes being one...oh the fun i had *sighs sentimentally*
They got their Kickstart which is great news I can't wait! I played Elite back on Amiga when only 6 years old and loved the game it was huge!!!! Best intro was Elite Frontier! Thank you for this most excellent video :)
I played this on a BBC using a home made joystick. Was wire frame graphics. The coolest part was syncing the rotation of the ship to that of the station. Just like 2001!
I remember Elite too. Looking back at this era of games, it's amazing how much the mind did (and had to!) fill in the blanks regarding the graphics. Another one of my favs was Homeworld. Not as in-depth as some but very atmospheric. Just discovered a Homeworld 2 mod called 'Complex' - looks real cool too :o) Fly safe Scott :o)
Combat in Frontier was also broken by the use of the autopilot. Once you locked on to an enemy it was a case of selecting autopilot and letting it fly the ship for you, always at the target. Since the computer alerted you when they were a decent distance away, it was cake to lock on and keep firing until they died, absolutely no dogfighting skill required.
4:50 That is not "time acceleration". That is what is called "Torus drive". It warps spacetime around you to create a "gravitational wave" that allows you to fly much faster than normal. The downside is that if anything powered or massive enough comes too close, the wave collapses, you slow down and won't be able to speed up until you get out of range of the thing. However time is NOT accelerated when you are Torus driving around. It only accelerates when you hyperspace around (the time it takes to traverse the wormhole is square of the distance). The clock syncs when you emerge from the wormhole and that is what you see.
Excellent vid sir of Oolite. For a good replay I advise to download the new 1.77 deployment build. Install The BGS.oxp along with the Griff and Smivs chipsets. Add Random Hits.oxp (for advanced killing contracts) along with new Cargoes and then you have a whole new game with lots of other career options. The power of Oolite really lies into the expansion packs. But you mention that. I liked the unexpected crash at the beginning of the vid :).
Your English was fine, and I share your feelings- Hopefully it will be as awesome as it sounds- Which it probably will because Cris Roberts is awesome like that.
A great space game with newtonian physics is Independence War (or I-War) there is a Deluxe edition that contains tons of extra content... Instead of a small fighter, you fly a corvette class ship. A true classic.
I remember playing Elite on my Apple II. It was one of the first great space games. I even liked the tiny novel that came with it. I found it online! The novel that is.
I remember this game so well. It was hard too. Dont know if you know, but there's a HD version of star control 2. The Yogscast have done some videos on it. Thought you might want to check that one out too. Keep up the vids.
Can't believe this exists!! I played Elite when I was younger, and I still have fond memories of it. I can now go and relive them! Oh and after all the fuss you made about slaves and ruining your reputation, I like how you casually sell them.
Loved Elite back in the day. Played on Commodore 64 and IBM PC AT. One rumour I think I actually saw was tribbles (like Star Trek). Once you bought them they multiplied and filled your screen.
My dad put Elite on my PC when i was young, it was way outdated by the time (2003 or 04 maybe). I also had a very old joystick, makes flying into stations so much easier. Oh the hours I spent....
5:30 Space full of mostly nothing and you fly into the only thing there. Like a car leaving the road and crashing into the only tree on a mile long strip of road. Sorry for the necropost, bought E:D on PS4 and been doing some research. Long time, first time. Big fan of your KSP series...
I know this is an old video, but I have to correct you. Trumbles were in the C64 version of Elite. If you used an escape pod, at least one Trumble would be on your new ship. The only way to get rid of them all was to fly close to the sun. The BBC version had the Constrictor Mission as the first mission.
Have you ever seen Vega Strike? (vegastrike on sourceforge) It has been in development for quite a while and has been slowly growing in distribution size. It has trading, space combat, and is similar to Privateer.
X3 Terran Conflict (or Albion, almost same, just some new tweaks) is imo the best space sandbox game in existance in the modern times. They do require ALOT of learning and patience, but so do most of the top-of-the-line sandbox games. (transport tycoon, europa universalis, master of orion, anyone?) But it may be "too late" to get into it now, as the newer X: Rebirth will come out this year. It aims to be easier to get into, but we'll see if it retains the same depth as the previous games.
Use mouse control. It really is good, once you get used to it. The analogue nature of it, and it is much more easier to use than the keyboard. You use the right hand mouse button as a "brake" to stop spinning. It really helps the game's controls, in my opinion. ;-) I hope that helps.
I remember many text based space trading games often in BASIC and often typed in from various magazines. I would suspect those to be the basis of such games.
It's funny, this game looks complicated as hell. But it still looks easier to figure out than Elite Dangerous. Like, I'm new to Elite Dangerous. It's confusing as fuck. Maybe it's easier to navigate the menus, shops, missions, etc, with a keyboard and mouse. But on Xbox, dealing with all of it is super confusing and hard to remember. Add onto that every other thing you need to remember about what you can and can't do, can and can't buy, where to buy this or that, what can even be used on your specific ship, how much cargo space you have, what to equip for specific things, what subsystem needs to be changed to equip that part, managing your shields and engine, dealing with random players being able to shoot your shit whenever, dealing with the various rules you have to follow around stations, and whatever else. Hell, you have to enable specific settings and click on specific menu options, just to get your mining laser to fire...and that's after the 20 minutes spent trying to figure out how to even install it. But looking at THIS game, I'm just sitting here like "this looks manageable." I know some people love it, but I feel like Dangerous went a little too far into the "sim" side of things, that they forgot it's a game. I know there's No Man's Sky or even to a lesser extent, Astroneer if I want a simpler and more casual space game. But I love how Elite Dangerous looks and feels. And I love how it's essentially just "shitty job simulator" but in space. But I feel like they could have simplified some of the mechanics just a bit.
how cool was a precigiol generated galaxies, the code back in the day had to be maxed, I think David is playing with his code again simple but perfect he has a good team not sure all of them know basic but I backed the beta
You misspelled Procedural. It does not mean random, it means that you can pack a lot of data into just one or two numbers. Those numbers are called seeds.

The problem with Star Citizen is that it will take so long to come out, that i'm not sure if it will be up to the 'standards' we will expect.. I mean, today we have incredible randomly generated universes like in Space Engine, and i imagine that the WiP Infinity: Quest For Earth may enter beta as well, also with a procedural universe. Will Star Citizen really be able to keep on par with that? So far it seems it will contain a set number of hand-made worlds... To be expanded, but not infinite.
Bad English? That was probably the best English I have seen from a non-English/American person. In fact, it was probably better than the English I have seen from most English/American people on the internet lol.
I can't do anything in this game, lol. I didn't have enough fuel to do any of the starting delivery missions, and when I tried to do one I warped to the neighboring system and immediately got attacked by NINE pirates.

I remember going right up to the suns in Elite and using my scoop to fill up on fuel.
callisto8413 scoop fuel and fry the Trumbles lol.
I did not get to play Elite much. But what i did play alot was Elite 2 Frontier. Fantastic Game. One of the most influential games of my childhood.
"Hmm, that looks like an asteroid I'm about to fly through..."
*flies into asteroid*
"I did not expect that!"
lmao this made my day.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one who played freelancer. Quite often no one I talked to has ever even heard of it.
Every few years I get back into OOLite for a while. I like to max out my passenger berths and shuttle people around. It feels more profitable than trading and less dangerous than pirate hunting, plus I can make up stories about the folks I'm taking on board and why they're crossing the galaxy.
Fantastic nostalgic moment. the docking music brings back the many hours I spent immersed in this world when I was about 8yrs old.

Elite blew my tiny mind! If only I could jump back 25 years and give myself KSP to play with.. my brain would melt.
I'm sorry Scott, it really isn't personal, but every time I watch this video I near fall off the chair laughing when you smack into that asteroid! :)
+Warriorking1963 The way you say "every time I watch this video" almost makes me fall of my chair laughing because I'm imagining you every now and then going "oh go on then" and playing it just to see that moment haha
+Squiggleblorg It's not funny mate, it's sad because it's true!!! :O) The Scottish accent adds to it too!
It is actually quite funny :D- I had to rewind

How can you not love a game where worlds are 'plagued by deadly edible arts graduates'?
I did mention the X games in the video.
I own them all.
I was born in '84 and 0:22 made me cry a bit.
I remember Elite too. Looking back at this era of games, it's amazing how much the mind did (and had to!) fill in the blanks regarding the graphics.

Whether KSP or Elite, time accelerate will kill you. Also, the Solo quote made my day.
A great space game with newtonian physics is Independence War (or I-War) there is a Deluxe edition that contains tons of extra content... Instead of a small fighter, you fly a corvette class ship. A true classic.
Can you imagine aliens with more than 2 hands? I would be crazy to see the controls of their vehicles.
I like to imagine Humanity couldn't figure out space windshields yet so these were the visuals they had to deal with.
I remember playing Elite on my Apple II. It was one of the first great space games. I even liked the tiny novel that came with it. I found it online! The novel that is.

Well you didn't listen very well because he mentioned the X series )_) ...still a damn good game though. ;)
Loved Elite back in the day. Played on Commodore 64 and IBM PC AT.
One rumour I think I actually saw was tribbles (like Star Trek). Once you bought them they multiplied and filled your screen.
Yes, this happened on the C64 version at least. I had it happen to me.
@@davidtaylor6124 cool. Glad to know dementia has set in yet.

OK I will I can think of 3 I want to cover.

(because it might just have been)
and now this video is starting to be old itself 😭
Pioneer Space Sim is the most rescent remake of Elite 2.
YES! Cover Newtonian space combat games!
X3 Terran Conflict (or Albion, almost same, just some new tweaks) is imo the best space sandbox game in existance in the modern times.

I would just turn off docking animations and dock instantly.
They now have an Android remake of this! Its called Alite. Its pretty good so far.
Freespace is another one to look at if you like shooting things

Have you seen the game "Pioneer"? They say it resembles "Frontier: Elite 2". It currently is in alpha and is free.
So if your ship is a Cobra, and your rank is Commander, wouldn't that make you a Cobra Commander? ... I'll show myself out.
Scott, did you hear about the remake of Elite with godlike graphics?
It exceeded its Kickstarter goal by 26%.

yes and they're only useful if you have 3 hands
good stuff
Homeworld 2! awesome! I have held off upgrading my OSX so as to not leave the last OSX version that will still run HW2!
Bad English? That was probably the best English I have seen from a non-English/American person. In fact, it was probably better than the English I have seen from most English/American people on the internet lol.
Moonbreakers was newtonian physics done right
Scott: Recites star wars line
Me: badass
:P
There is a remake of Frontier: Elite as well. Check out Pioneer. It's still very alpha, but steadily getting better and pretty fun.
Scott, do you not have partnership yet? if you dont You should REALLY get partnership!
4:58 Fly safe, Scott! :O
...Wow, so the original game was most likely the inspiration for the Escape Velocity series, wasn't it?
I can't do anything in this game, lol. I didn't have enough fuel to do any of the starting delivery missions, and when I tried to do one I warped to the neighboring system and immediately got attacked by NINE pirates.
He mentions it in this video.
I'd like to play Oolite using Frontier controls and hud, it's way easier to control your ship in Frontier.
This looks cool :D I've been going on a space sim binge and think I might try this out
Quick question though: Is there a cockpit view or at least a mod for one?
I want that a lot already just looking at it :'(
That game is older than me >.
Just remember to fully wind it up first, LOL :oP
Let's face it, any smart phone could handle it running in the background! :o)
"Incoming misi-"
*kaboom*
Famous last words 😆
Did you watch the video? He mentioned it in the video!
FlashTrek: Broken Mirror is a neat game that's pretty similar to this, except i think it's more startrek inspired.
I couldn't even work out how to fly the ship in X3...
He mentioned it already so I think he knows =P
i just downloaded this i have a question HOW Do I Redifine The Controlls
You should take a look at the Freespace 2 SCP
The dot(.) and comma (,) keys are the yaw :)
How the hell did you get all that equipment with five kills and being 'harmless'?
I remember Elite and elite 2 frontier on atarist
I saved up and bought an anaconda and use it to ferry people and things across the galaxy
@13:27... "Never tell me the odds!" :)
Independence War 1&2?
