Investment Casting || Precision Casting || Lost Wax Investment Casting
Investment casting is a multi-step process that produces near-net shape precision parts that usually require few finishing details. The process begins with wax being injected into a die to create a pattern of the finished product. The patterns are then affixed to wax runner bars to create what is known as a “tree.”
A robot dips the tree repeatedly into a slurry to develop a ceramic shell, and then the wax is removed in a steam autoclave. Once the wax is removed, the ceramic shell is fired and then filled with molten metal to create the part.
Also known as lost wax casting, investment casting can be used to produce a wide variety of precision parts from many alloys and metals, including aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, brass and bronze.
Parts made by investment casting are used in a broad range of industries, including fluid power, oil and gas, food and dairy, military, aerospace and aviation and agriculture.
The investment casting process offers numerous advantages over other casting, machining and manufacturing methods.
Is investment casting the same as lost wax?
Investment casting (also known as lost wax investment casting) produces parts with fine detail and excellent as-cast surface finish. Investment castings shape into internal or external features, thin walls, and internal passageways to get to a near-net shape.
Is investment casting a precision casting process?
At this time, the investment casting foundry pour the molten metal from the pouring port. After the melt has cooled, the required parts are made. Investment casting is also called precision casting. This and lost wax are both a manufacturing process.
What is wax investment casting?
Investment casting, also known as precision casting or lost-wax casting, is a manufacturing process in which a wax pattern is used to shape a disposable ceramic mold. A wax pattern is made in the exact shape of the item to be cast. This pattern is coated with a refractory ceramic material
Is Lost Foam Casting investment casting?
Lost foam is essentially the same process as investment casting except that that patterns are created using expanding polystyrene foam instead of wax. There are also some differences in the shell building process due to this change.
