The Indonesian covers are GORGEOUS. I just love the art style that it was chosen for it and how the more "abstract" elements were combined with the characters (like the map on Kell's coat). Also, regarding the orientation of the titles in the spines, I'm from South America and the orientation that I'm used to in spanish books is like in the french edition. Which is interesting because I never noticed how it is different, but the moment you said it looked weird to you, I was like "why?" and then it came to me that it is how I'm used to see it. Great video! Love this series!

Omg I'm from Bulgaria and I didn't expect to see the Bulgarian editions on the list 😭 that's so cool ❤️ the illumicrate sleeves are made for the special illumicrate edition that you are waiting on btw! They were in the box with the first book you already have
I own the paperback version, which has the white, red and black spines and I LOVE it because I also own Vicious, Vengeful and This Savage Song and the spines fit pretty well together.
I wanna know your take on the edition that owlcrate came out with. I’m caught between that and the collectors edition which I’m glad I watched your video because I didn’t expect the ribbons and the artwork on the inside.
THAT WAS SO COOL. So many different editions. In Brazil we have two different editions, one is like the american editions, the other one is from a box, is a pretty editions but I don't really like them. I love the french edition, I think is so pretty!! Regarding the title orientation of the titles in the spine, in Brazil we have both ways... it depends on the book publisher.
This is off subject. I have just started Mistborn. You have brought me to buying the book and now I'm reading it. I've been watching your channel for over a year now. Love what you do. Most fantasy I've been buying is because of you. So far, I'm enjoying the book. Thank you for hyping up the books. 📚
I have never seen the French editions and they are AMAZING!!! I may have to collect them someday. The art style reminds me of the Polish Mistborn books, which I also really like. Thanks for doing these videos. They're so cool!
Hi Elliot ! Im from iran and i just wanted to say Persian and farsi are the same language ! Also The one before the Illumicrate is farsi too ! In Iran the books have been translated by 3 different publishers .
Great video, Elle! Funny story - watching this, I took a look at my own copies. I originally read them from the library. I just realized now that I never picked up the second book for my own library. I have had 1 & 3 sitting there (for years) and never bought A Gathering of Shadows. Oops! The French covers remind me of the Zack Argyle books. I don’t know if it’s the font maybe or the art, but I thought of them right away when I saw them.
Love this series of videos comparing all the different editions! Sean, I love the Juniper Editions of both Red Rising and Shades of Magic books too! Thank you for putting in the work and money to bring this to us! ❤️📘📕📗📙❤️
Ok, I had to go check and almost all of my Czech books have the text on spine from down up and English ones the other way around. Two random Czech books have it the "English" way. Honestly I never noticed until now :D
yay the Bulgarian ones are here, although not my favs I do like it when my country designs covers for the books I like have you seen the Mistborn new editions they are a bit dark but I love them easily my favourite Bulgarian covers along with the cover for Rhythm of War
I like consistency on the colours of spines for some books, but for Shades of Magic I was in love with the three colour spine of the collector's edition, as I think it represents the story so well ☺ That's why I save up after reading the books from the library to buy that edition, and it looks soooo pretty! (But I'm still tempted by the Juniper jackets, those spines are just perfect) Edit: the russian edition also looks really cool, I'll definitely would cover buy it!
The juniper edition is definitely my favorite it's the one I own & it's my precious 😍 I'm actually not crazy about the US collector's edition cuz the colors don't really work for me that orange/gold instead of grey/black/white/red. Otherwise the Indonesian and Chinese editions have really amazing cover art I love that!
Great video! I've never notice the title on the spine thing before, but since you pointed it out I checked my books. I'm from Ecuador so I have many books in spanish and aparently is whatever the publisher is feeling that day. Half of them is top to bottom, and the other half bottom to top 🤷🏻♀️
Love this video and your amazing channel please stay safe and enjoy your reading love your Australia fan John xxx think I might have to read this series of books 📚 soon as I can get it
I read in spanish as well and try to get those books from local bookstores or imprints in Puerto Rico (where I'm from) and the orientation of the words on the spine isn't consistent which is pretty annoying if I stack books horizontally.
German here. I must say the direction of text on the spine is pretty inconsistent here. In my experience one way does not occur more often than the other. I appreciate that at least my English books fit together on the shelves.
I always thought that there was no "usual" way for the title to be on the spine because my collection is mixed - but as I am looking around myself it is literally all my english books that have it "top to bottom" and all my german books that have it "bottom to top" Which just blew my mind - I had never made that connection before^^
I'm surprised when different languages have the book titles differently as well. It makes me feel very weird although it's also sorta cool? For example Hamnet in German is called Judith and Hamnet and truthfully... Yeah I was surprised
Ngl I thought you were also going to show how the book holds and a little bit of the inside from your announcement video, not just the cover. Because good covers are nice but with hand mobility issues, certain format types work better for me to read from like really floppy and easy to open or light weight.
The only one I’d say feels lightweight is the Indonesian one, which is why it’s the only one I really made any kind of remarks about the feel for. The English ones feel like standard hardbacks-hope that helps!
Bilingual reader/speaker from Belgium here: yes, French books have the writing facing the other way! It actually took me a while to notice it myself because I read very little in French compared to in English. I noticed it with my non-fiction books and was like "huh, that's interesting" lmao. On the other hand, I despise the fact they couldn't even be bothered to translate the titles into French...?! What kind of half-arsed nonsense is that? Don't get me wrong, the French often suck arse at translating movie and book titles decently, but it's still better than just lazily co-opting English words in the repulsively trendy way it is today. Ugh (yeah, I know, it may sound silly, but as someone who has both English and French as their native tongues, it's a huge pet peeve of mine).
For the Juniper edition I just noticed this and it felt kinda annoying that the order of the Londons isn't as described in the books. From just reading the first one I remember it was grey, red white and black in that order and it was actually pretty important based on the plot points
A tier: original, uk, french, farsi, illumicrate sleeves original ones are just chef kiss. it’s simple, eye catching and stands out from other fantasy covers. uk covers somewhat reminds me of crime novels? the gold is so rich that it looks expensive. i personally LOVE artworks as covers so french edition is right up my alley. i agree that they kinda look like fanarts and they also look like ya paranormal romance in a sense? farsi is by far my favorite of all. i can see why some ppl won’t like them if they don’t like ppl on covers. illu sleeves are so EPIC and i like them. B tier: juniper, bulgarian, collectors edition, italian, german, russian, persian juniper ones are so sleek and clean but the spines are not my cup of tea at all. bulgarian editions look like the standard fantasy covers. i like the colors of collector editions but i wished they had new different book covers. italian, german ones has similar silhouette as the uk ones but not a fan of those colors at all. russian one looks like a horror novel. persian: the purple is not the vibe at all. C tier: indonesian, barnes and noble, chinese, serbian, eng apparently, illumicrate, indonesian: i prefer realistic art style than really stylized ones. objectively they are so cool tho. b&n i don’t see how only changing colors makes a “special” edition chinese, serbian, eng apparently, illumicarte ones don’t tell me anything abt the story (and kinda boring) if that makes sense. my ranking doesn’t make sense at all lol. after seeing the farsi one, i badly wanna see the animated series of adsom in that artstyle. damn, i badly need farsi edition in my life :,)
I want an animated series too! I actually said that in filming and then edited it out when I was trying to cut down the length of the video 😅 But that would be so cool 😄😄😄
Tbh, the us cover looks too simplistic for me. It just looks very bland, compared to the UK one where it's simple but it has something going for it. And I SO AGREE ON THE COVER WITH THE VEINS! That just looks awesome, wish they were available as book jackets though. Lastly, I like the Indonesia version where it has Kell's face (Too bad this wasn't the US one) but it does kinda scream Manga vibes
I haven't read this series yet, but I own the US collector's editions with the different colored spines & I like that they're different! I think they go with Schwab's other series better that way since her books always seem to be black, white, or red. It makes them all look like they belong together - even if this particular series looks a little more eclectic as a result. (I'm also generally not a fan of white so...there's that.) 🙃 I do agree with you that the 'white' parts of the collector's editions could be more white though - not gold. For the French spines - I'm not sure about other countries, but you know the series The Mirror Visitor Quartet by Christelle Dabos? (First book is A Winter's Promise.) Those are translated from French but even the English translations have the words going up the spine instead of down the spine. I thought I had a misprint at first but no, they're all like that! It bothers me. 😅 When you stack them on their sides, you have to put the book upside down in order for the words to be right-side up...?!?!? I don't get the reasoning. (Also, why are the titles still in English if it's the French edition??? That's surprising.) I adore this video series. Thank you for doing this! 😊
Can't wait for the Wheel of Time different editions. Including the new Orbit covers for the show, they look dope. However, buying 15 books of each edition might leave you bankrupt, unless you go for used books.
From top to bottom is common for French edition, which is a nightmare when you put the book horizontally on the shelf. But what I don’t understand is why they didnt translate the title in French
I have the special edition because they were cheaper than the original hardbacks, but it bugs me soo much that the spine of the last book is kinda yellow. I really prefer the normal editions :'D
having the gherkin on the Chinese one really throws me off... because the books aren't set in modern London, and it's such an obviously modern building
This is something that I don't understand for the french editions : they want an english title, but change it from the one the author picked... Why ? Either keep the original title or just translate it, changing it is a little weird. And it's true for the way the title is displayed on the spines, I just realised it this year, having my french and english books next to each others. And it confused me so much, that means that we are not turning our head the same way when reading book titles on a shelf... Also, when you put the book horizontally, the french books are going to have the back facing up, while the US/UK will have the cover facing up and it makes more sense in my opinion. I wish all books had the title on the spine this way. Sorry for all this rambling, I'm very pationate about all this :) Very cool video serie by the way, it's great to 'visit the world' this way
If I was rich I would buy so many editions of all of Schwab’s books (not just Shades of Magic and probably all my other fav series). She’s truly blessed with great covers
I have the US paperbacks and the spines are different colours. Also have the first UK hardback and waiting for illumicrate second and third. Wish I got the first one but didn’t know about it until after they were sold out
I liked the Indonesian ones; I know they are not as sophisticated as many of the other styles, and the fact that book 3 doesn't match the other 2 on the spine is super annoying, but I still think I'd pick that set over the others.
Red Coat is the character's signature! They simply can't have the other characters wear it lol, so I prefer the Original edition to the US Collector's Edition.
@@ebnovels if you lay them down on their sides (so you can read the text) the top one is still part 1 and the series is still in order counting up. Other books are in order but counting down. That’s why I like the idea of this, but the look clashes a bit with books in other languages.
Yes! Do give it a go, although I'd warn you that the level set by the first book was never really matched up to by the remaining two. But that's in my opinion, nevertheless a great series to read!
I enjoyed it! I actually thought the first book took awhile to get going 😅 People seem to have very different reactions to the different books in the series, which I think is partly because each book sort of swaps who the main character is. I hope you like them though, if you do get around to them 😄
When I type in what the pronunciation is, it says it’s pronounced ur•aan. Also, I know it’s not English; I was amused that it’s listed as English when it so clearly isn’t. Sorry that wasn’t really obvious! ☺️
@@ebnovels ohh totally acceptable! And people usually do pronounce i_ran but it's actually ee_ran! So just wanted to mention it here and don't worry! I love your videos and you collection is fabolouse. And thank you for showing so many underrated countries (like mine )collection it's meaningful 😊

Oh man, as said in the video, I love consistency, so I think my brain would have a hard time with 50/50!

chinese, serbian, eng apparently, illumicarte ones don’t tell me anything abt the story (and kinda boring) if that makes sense.
my ranking doesn’t make sense at all lol. after seeing the farsi one, i badly wanna see the animated series of adsom in that artstyle. damn, i badly need farsi edition in my life :,)
I want an animated series too! I actually said that in filming and then edited it out when I was trying to cut down the length of the video 😅 But that would be so cool 😄😄😄
What language was that "English" one? It looked like something from the group of Arabic, Hebrew, or Hindi.
iran language
Tbh, the us cover looks too simplistic for me. It just looks very bland, compared to the UK one where it's simple but it has something going for it. And I SO AGREE ON THE COVER WITH THE VEINS! That just looks awesome, wish they were available as book jackets though. Lastly, I like the Indonesia version where it has Kell's face (Too bad this wasn't the US one) but it does kinda scream Manga vibes
The red illumicrate one nd the juniper's jackets were amazing, nd I believe the last three are all Farsi translations (different translators tho).
Interesting that there are different translators!
That's surprising.)
I adore this video series.
Yeah, I don’t understand that either! It’s so fun to see these random details 😄
In Spain the bottom to top writing on the spine is the norm, though I have found a couple top to bottom ones it's rare here.
That’s so bizarre that it’s not always the same!
I have the special edition because they were cheaper than the original hardbacks, but it bugs me soo much that the spine of the last book is kinda yellow. I really prefer the normal editions :'D
I know, I wish it was white, or that they were all the same spine color!
They look so great
Right? So many great editions 😄😄😄
That first of the what could have been covers looks like Gambit from X-men.
Oh my gosh, you’re right! 😂
having the gherkin on the Chinese one really throws me off... because the books aren't set in modern London, and it's such an obviously modern building
The one that you mentioned as "English apparently" is actually the Persian edition.
Thanks! I knew it wasn’t English, but I got a kick out of it being listed as such 🤣
This is something that I don't understand for the french editions : they want an english title, but change it from the one the author picked...
Sorry for all this rambling, I'm very pationate about all this :) Very cool video serie by the way, it's great to 'visit the world' this way
Well thanks! And yes, it’s so bizarre!!! Also, I must say, I literally lol’s imagining people tilting their heads different ways 😂
I throughly enjoy these comparison videos, unfortunately it usually costs me $ when I see editions I just can't live without 😂🤦♀️.
If I was rich I would buy so many editions of all of Schwab’s books (not just Shades of Magic and probably all my other fav series). She’s truly blessed with great covers
I have the US paperbacks and the spines are different colours. Also have the first UK hardback and waiting for illumicrate second and third. Wish I got the first one but didn’t know about it until after they were sold out
I’ve seen people selling them from time to time on some Facebook buy/sell/trade groups! 💗
I liked the Indonesian ones; I know they are not as sophisticated as many of the other styles, and the fact that book 3 doesn't match the other 2 on the spine is super annoying, but I still think I'd pick that set over the others.
I like the originals too
Oh man, I wish I could read French, I love those covers!
I wish I could read literally any other language 😂 But I get what you mean and yes, the French editions are awesome!
Red Coat is the character's signature! They simply can't have the other characters wear it lol, so I prefer the Original edition to the US Collector's Edition.
Ahh, a very interesting observation!
The "English One" is the Farsi version 😅 I'm Persian so I noticed it right away.
I figured! Idk why they had it listed as English, but I found it amusing 😂
@@ebnovels same! It was so funny because the next two were both in Farsi/Persian too😂
For the spines in the French editions: this is the same with DVDs as for books. It seems to be a French convention.
Not only in France it's the same in Germany 😅
Ohh, how interesting! I wonder why that is 🤔
@@ebnovels if you lay them down on their sides (so you can read the text) the top one is still part 1 and the series is still in order counting up. Other books are in order but counting down. That’s why I like the idea of this, but the look clashes a bit with books in other languages.
is shades of magic good???
I hope you like them though, if you do get around to them 😄
YOU NEED TO SEE THE DUTCH EDITIONS!!!
Different shades of Shades of Magic
the "upside down text" is a continental Europe thing. You Americans have it the other way :D
The one that you named as "english apparently" is iranian actually. And iran is prounounced ee_ran🙄
And thank you for showing so many underrated countries (like mine )collection it's meaningful 😊
all french books have the words that way down the spine xD weird huh
Almost all the French books are that way
That’s helpful to know!
