    I had a similar experience with being nervous to set up my reef tank because of everybody saying how hard it is. It’s definitely not an “easy” tank, but I didn’t need to be nearly as worried as I was. The only difference between saltwater and freshwater is the salt. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @Zense_19
      @Zense_19 3 роки тому +3

      Yeah honestly once you figure out the several new pieces of equipment you need, it’s the same as freshwater

    • @dylanneff
      @dylanneff 3 роки тому +1

      Ya, I’m not even convinced that you NEED any of the extra equipment. I’m using the same equipment I had on my freshwater tank + a higher K light and I’m running at undetectable levels of nitrates and low phosphates. Also only two casualties out of the livestock I’ve added including corals. Granted I’ve only had it for 7 months so there’s still plenty of time for things to devolve into chaos…

      @@dylanneff do you mind sharing your filter setup? I have a canister filter and I’m not sure how to go about ordering the media in it

    • @dylanneff
      @dylanneff 3 роки тому +1

      I’m just using a Tetra Whisper hang on back filter with bio rings and filter floss. Not my favorite filter, but I had it laying around so I thought I’d try it. I’ve never used a canister before, but I’ve heard others suggest the order floss, coarse sponge, fine sponge, bio media, chemical media. If I were to set one up on a freshwater tank I’d probably just start with sponge, but again I don’t have direct experience.

    • @dylanneff
      @dylanneff 3 роки тому +1

      Oh also I have Ulva macroalgae! That’s a huge part of why I don’t have nitrates in the water.

    Careful with that 525 gph wavemake lost many clowns and anemones to those i would definitely upgrade to the 660gph currents usa pump to connect to your loop system. It has a sponge around the pump to protect stuff from getting sucked up. Great video tho man!

      Thanks for the advice! I recently switched to a hygger wave make and haven’t had any problems with fish getting sucked in. Hopefully it will stay that way!

      @@BarrysAquarium i usually recommend 1 snail and/or hermit crab for a gallon of water. At the same time different snails will do different things. Some are great for algae some are carnivorous. Having a mix is great.

      It’s a Current USA Marine LED. This light is great if you only plan on keeping low light corals in my opinion. Another cheaper option is the Finnex Planted Plus. It’s very similar to the other light except it’s usually marketed to freshwater, but I’ve seen people on UA-cam use it for coral and have great success with it. Yes defiantly, I would advise though to do your best to get the all the fresh water thoroughly out. Tap water or the chlorine anyways is toxic to salt water fish, whereas freshwater fish can tolerate much more from what I’ve learned, getting into this hobby. Currently cycling my evo can’t wait, also check out as many local saltwater stores as possible, and pick their brain. My local guy has been super helpful and really keen to teaching beginners right.
