- Ein Gedi is the home of desert goats known as ibex. Around 1000 BC, Ein Gedi served as one of the main places of refuge for David as he fled from Saul.
The Ibex shofar is sounded in the Year of Jubilee. From Biblical times through today, one can go to the wilderness of Ein Gedi (literally “the wellspring of the goat”) and see the ibex upon the rocks, climbing them with extraordinary agility. The word ya’al, as a verb, means “he shall go up,” and would be an appropriate description of these superb climbers. The view in the Mishnah is that the familiar ram’s horn should be used for Rosh HaShanah, with the ibex horn being used for the shofar of Yovel (the jubilee year): Rabbi Yehudah says: The shofar of Rosh HaShanah is that of rams, and of Yovel (the jubilee year) is that of ibex. (Mishnah, Rosh HaShanah 3:2)

With a properly carved mouthpiece, it's as easy as tooting a bugle.
With a bad one (I'm looking at you budget priced sheep horns!) all you'll get is a dissapoinment and an asthmatic arkvaark mating call.

I've been to Ein Gedi 1985 and while walking one Shabatt 1986 in an area surrounded by overgrown brush and boulders suddenly out of nowhere face to face with a young Ibex that took off as swiftly it appeared in Jerusalem!

Praise God, what a sound. The ancient Israelites would've used this, along with male sheep's horns, and possibly Arabian oryx horns. Maybe Solomon had a few kudu horns with all of his trade connections.

Best sounding ibex shofars are in the 40" to 45" size range. Mine is 43". There is a man by the name of Shimon Keinan, who owns a reputable shofar factory in the Golan Heights called Kol Shofar. This is one of the few places you can get a true ibex.

I am not a Jew by blood, not am I one by faith. I am SDA like Doug Batchelor. However, my wife is a Messianic Jew by faith. For some reason, I have felt compelled to begin learning some of the traditional Hebrew blessings/prayers. I have felt compelled to begin learning to read, write, and speak Hebrew. What blows my mind is that it feels like I have a very strong and firm hand guiding and driving me toward it. It is like I am feeling compelled by someone/something greater than anything in this world to do so, while never forsaking my faith. With this compunction, I have found the blessing I have learned has come to me easier than I thought it would. Along with this, is a compelling/driving force urging me to buy a couple of shofar and learn the traditional calls as well as calls I can hear sounding in my head as clear as though they were being played right next to me. This, by and large, is the strongest of the compelling feelings I have. I do not know why it is there, or why I am getting this feeling, but I am. I have an idea from whence it comes but, I have to wonder..."Why me?" Beautiful shofar calls. Really gets the blood pumping!
