      Would it be unethical to bring someone back from death if it means putting an end to their peaceful slumber or whatever?

    A small correction, a defibrillator will not jump start an asystolic (stopped) heart, CPR is the method for that.
    Defibrillators are for resetting the rhythm of the heart, tachycardia when the rhythm is in runaway mode and going too fast or faster and faster is where they are often used. A friend of mine has a difib built into his chest for just that symptom.

    As a reader of the novel Frankenstein (I had to read it for my English class haha), I just want to note that Victor actually never finished his studies… he created the creature, got scared and ran away, then fell ill and then left Ingolstadt to go back to his family. Some other things happen that stop him from ever going back and finishing his studies. So technically, every movie calling him “Dr Frankenstein” is wrong because Shelley made him a quite young man that never finished studying o_o
    I mean, at least in the original book he never was a doctor, but we looked at plenty of adaptations now and I have come to realize every movie changed a lot so whatever I guess haha XD
    I hadn’t ever watched or read Frankenstein before so now that I read the book I can’t stop seeing everything people “got wrong” so to say
    Just wanted to put that out there as a fact, maybe someone finds it interesting

    • @blehh_mae
      @blehh_mae 2 роки тому +1

      i dont know what exactly it takes to make someone a doctor, but id say if youve studied a bit and you can reanimate the dead from a bunch of random parts, youd probably atleast deserve the title, but maybe not all the respect that comes with it for obvious reasons

    • @toughbutsweet1
      @toughbutsweet1 Рік тому +1

      During the time of Mary Shelley and Victor Frankenstein, there were universities, but there was no governing board that determined or bestowed doctoral ship on individuals. So Victor could have just called himself a doctor. But you are correct, that in the book he is not called Dr. Frankenstein. But I did always wonder why the Monster never got a name? He could have just called himself Sparky or Bolt.

    My father was born with Cystic Fibrosis - 3/4 of his siblings had it. Diagnosed in 1967 when he was 9, they doctors gave him six years to live. His passed away when he was twelve and his brother when he was 27 (from a failed double lung transplant. Though his lungs came close to failure many times in his life, he pulled through every time. In 2013 he received a double lung transplant that was successful - only the second human being in the world to survive this surgery. For four months it went back and forth from hours to live to doing great. Today, at 63 years young, he has a new lease on life. He is now the longest living human being with cystic fibrosis in recorded history. As the video describes, he will be on immuno-suppression medication for the rest of his life but modern science has come a long way.

    Frankenstein is one of my favourite novels, I'd argue that society also helped create the monster as much as Victor Frankenstein (who isn't a doctor in the novel) did. All he wanted was to be loved and accepted but he was rejected because of his appearance and lashed out at the world that hurt him.
    I've also been watching the Frankenstein Chronicles on Netflix which reignited my fascination with galvanism, as well as the other stranger areas of science such as cryogenic and the like. It's fascinating.

    I don't recall Miss Shelley ever mentioning electricity in her novel. Dr. Frankenstein was a modern alchemist, and I envision his creature bathing in strange fuming brews and sparkling juices, rather than surrounded by cables, violent voltaic arcs and sparks. I believe all that thrilling blazing paraphernalia is actually a Hollywood thing. I guess the only way around is to read the book again! I did enjoy it quite a lot the first time-

      Frankenstein's apparatus wasn't described. He just says, "I collected the instruments of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet." That's all the book tells us about it. I got the impression that his "instruments of life" weren't large or impressive, and the "lifeless thing" was just lying on the floor. Also, if I recall correctly, it's not even clear that Frankenstein (who wasn't a doctor) stitched the creature together out of body parts. He had studied corpses, but for all we know, the creature was made of artificial tissue. What Mary Shelley described wouldn't look interesting on film.

      Ehhh kinda. The evidence for Epinephrine actually doing anything is inconclusive, we basically still do it because that's how it's always been done. CPR is absolutely necessary because without oxygenation, there's nothing to defibrillate. AEDs are great, super easy for lay responders. Their algorithms have gotten extremely good in identifying V-fib and V-Tach, the only two shockable rhythms. The best way to do it is still manually, but that takes quite a bit of school and training. But no, you require defibrillation in addition to other antidysrhythmics such as lidocaine or amiodarone in order to treat more easily reversible dysrhythmias. Aystole (flat line) and PEA (Pulseless Electrical Activity) are non-shockable and very rarely respond to Epinephrine, at least in my experience and the experience of my coworkers.

    I work in heart surgery. A defibrillator does not "shock" someone to life. In fact, the shock STOPS the heart. The point is that the patient is in a lethal arrhythmia, usually ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia. The shock stops the heart, and allows the normal pacemaker of the heart (the sinus node" to start it's own normal rhythm.

    The defibrillator is used for ventricular fibrillation when the parts of the hearts are beating out of sync without pumping blood. In asystolia (the heart fully stopped) usually the prognostic is bad and the defibrillator rarely works. What you see in movies when someone has the heart stopped and is brought back with a defibrillator is just that: a movie. In fact the presence of those machines in malls and supermarkets can cause more harm than good, that is why today most of those are automatic and only act if they detect fibrillation to avoid people using it when someone has a coronary infarction.

    Electro Convulsive Therapy is considered barbaric today, because it burns the brain. I personally worked in a facility that still used both ECT and Insulin Shock Therapy in the early 1970s, and some degree of memory loss was common. Some of it came back as the brain found new pathways to work around the injured cells, some could not, but my point is, there WERE injuries to the brain.
    The idea our mustachioed friend states, that the monster might have been happier and a more positive influence in society if better treated, was in fact Mary's point. Her own father distanced himself from her, and her portrayal of Victor Frankenstein's reaction to his creation, was a thinly disguised picture of how she saw her father's behavior toward her.
