Oh man @LegalEagle in the comments! If you haven't had the suggestion yet, check out Broadchurch! Would love to know your thoughts on the UK court system in that show!
Mark/Jake deserve a pizza for allowing us to critique their match! I'm assuming indoor courts here are faster, some skid factor. Mark came back 6-1 in the 2nd, kudos to him. Jake has a great serve motion, once he dials that in (and doesn't double fault FIVE times) he will definitely win his serve as he moves it around. On a side note I'd like to see Essential start using 'yellow arrows', on the screen and dots to better point out hitting spots, landing spots. Of all the instructors here Kirby has the smoothest stroke, looks natural and unforced. In your early years you were outside and it seemed windy every dang day, now the videos are worth watching more than once as the tips are golden. If you're ever taught friends who wanted to 'get better', you quickly realize it takes time on the court, unlearning bad habits and a commitment to react/change -but that friend 'might be awhile'.
It's great to introduce strategic thinking at this level. Having a plan takes the mind off self-criticism and makes the game more complex and interesting. Great video! I'd love some detail on quickly making a plan based on the ten minute warm up.
See that chart we're using? It's part of the most powerful singles resource ever created... keep it in your tennis bag and use it in every match to completely dissect and destroy your opponents' game: essentialtennisvideos.com/singles-matrix
These are solid 3.5 players. Yes, they don't have the fastest serves, hit many winners, or put tons of pressure on their opponents...but that is why its 3.5. At this level, most of your points come from unforced errors, and consistency and placement will win you most games rather than pure power. Also keep in mind, in recorded footage amateurs tend to look worse. Try recording yourself playing and you might be shocked!
EVERYBODY is shocked when they see themselves on video 🙂 The only people who criticize on the internet haven't ever seen what their own game looks like. If they had they wouldn't say a word....
Pinworms666 We did it once, and the strokes looked more or less fine, however we did move soooo slow compared to the TV pros. And that was, when I was in my early 20.
This is a really great idea! Watching players at what is, I believe to be, the average play level getting coaching from much better players. Better thought process, better decision making! I think most players could really benefit from this
I think to test the chart you need to only help one player in the match. Maybe have a 3.5 play a 4.0 and help the 3.5 as he should on paper lose. Or have 3 matches with 3 pairs and help only one side and see if the chart helps win the match.
How do you have the time to fill this out at the end of warm up and after each change over? This tool sounds really helpful, but is it really possible to use this in the middle of a match? You have a limited amount of time to write stuff down and reformulate your strategy before the next game in the set has to start.
There are over 2,000 videos here on our UA-cam channel for free, Juan. More than most people will ever watch in a lifetime. Those who want to go deeper on a certain topic and want to support us and what we do are welcomed to sign up. If that isn't you then no worries! Lots for you to take advantage of here at no cost!
I really enjoyed the video. I know they did it with women but you think they will ever have a coach on court during a match. I think it will bring a different element to the game where a coach can coach a player.
I know this is an older video so don't know if Ian will ever see it but I would love to see some more content like this. Maybe one of Ian's students vs one of Mark's?
Actually, no. 3.5 players are anywhere from 3.00-3.50. A player with a USTA ranking of 3.51 would be a 4.0 player. But yes, there is a wide range of playing abilities within the 3.5 category.
Richard Saenz I believe they didn’t really mind his foot faulting because they were more interested in improving their strategies. If you noticed, they didn’t focus on any negatives.
It wasn't a foot fault coaching session, it was a strategy coaching session, Richard. Talking to them about everything ELSE they needed to improve would have made learning impossible. -Ian
Yes, it is, haha. "Hey.....your foot keeps moving too far when you serve.....don't do that....but definitely don't rethink it!!". You honestly think he's going to make a change to his service technique without "rethinking" it?
I agree, if this were a regular game, but it's not a regular game. The coaches missed an opportunity to participate in a teaching event. The fact that the coach defends ignoring the rules means he is complicit in promotion of cheating as a tool to win.
If you clicked the link then you know $197 isn't for "a sheet of paper", Thomas. I'm sorry if it isn't worth while for you, but please know we'll continue publishing more high quality coaching right here on UA-cam for free than any other channel. We've got your back either way. -Ian
@@EssentialTennis well I'm very well aware of that. My parents though won't understand what this sheet has to offer. They'll think it's a waste of money. However, I will try to convince them so wish me luck
Blue shirt your serve is a liability Terrible service mechanics and surprised nothing has been done about that being a 3.5. That serve alone drops you down to 2.5. Why are these tennis experts not even addressing his serve mechanics?
More of this please! Love seeing amateur strategy with advice and adjustments. The prior videos of coach matches plus analysis were also amazing.

Ah this is the series I’ve been looking for, more please! For weaker and better players
Glad you enjoyed it, Pancakes!
This is really amazing on court coaching and strategy for players with their own level of resources. Cool Video.
Jake and Mark were awesome to work with! Maybe we'll do more of this in the future. Thanks for watching 30s!
I would like to see more of this type of content! 3.5 vs 3.5, 4.0 vs 4.0 etc!
Thanks for telling me!

Nice vid! My dude with the dodgy call at 6.33 though 😂
Thanks for watching, Vince!
Agreed!
was gonna comment about that!
Great stuff. Keep this going . Really great to watch this type of stuff
You should really have more of these types of videos. Really interesting to watch.
More on the way, Colin! Thanks for watching 🙂
Great format for a coaching/analysis video.

Science!
Could there be more foot faults from Mark?
Yeah ! I love your videos about singles strategy
Glad you enjoyed it, Diabeureu!
I was rooting for the older fella, cuz #oldguysrule :)

I love the idea of the sheet but was thinking the same thing. 🎾👍
Really love this idea and the videos.
Once you look at the sheet, you can make mental notes on those things. Seems to me the 'sheet' represents what you should be looking at as you play.
Where do I get the tool?
This is great 👍
Very useful
Great to hear!
197 for the sheet a bit expensive if you ask me
If you think all you get is a sheet of paper then you clearly didn't read the page, Juan 🙂
Essential Tennis - Lessons and Instruction for Passionate Players 20 bugs more and I can buy the babolat pure aero
Essential Tennis - Lessons and Instruction for Passionate Players you could give the pdf for free

Does anyone know what NTRP 3.5 is in UK ratings ? anyone
3.5£
Looking at theM I’d say something between a 8.2-6.2
@@PruthviPrakash00 So is a lower number better in the UK ? is it 1 to 10
Thanks for watching as always, Pruthvi! Where do you live?
@@EssentialTennis Do you know the ratings in uk Ian ? or kevin -
Split step! They need to make that a normal habit or they won’t get far!
cool concept :)
Thanks for watching, Christopher!
3.5 and 3.9 players are lumped together as 3.5...
That's very true! The difference from the bottom to the top of each NTRP level is huge.

Out at 6.30 definitely in!
The guy in blue kept foot faulting on his serve and no coach told him to stop doing it. You coaches should be holding them to a higher standard.
Richard Saenz I believe they didn’t really mind his foot faulting because they were more interested in improving their strategies. If you noticed, they didn’t focus on any negatives.

That's the opponent's call. If he doesn't call it, it's not a fault. Play on.

Yes, it is. The real problem is you don't know what your own game looks like, you've never seen it on video.
It's definitely 3.5. I know one of those guys and have played against him.

They play decently for 3.5, but not great, need to give more pressure to Your opponent.
