It feels so natural now, that I'm actually FORCED to roll after landing from a huge drop. I watched this tutorial so I would know how to teach it to my friends, because to me it's like teaching someone to walk, and it's really hard.
i tried this a time ago when i was 9 i failed so hard now i am 13 and i tried this again i've been practising for a half-hour andnow i can dive while sprinting and roll thanks man :)
SAME! I KNOW HOW TO DO THE ROLL BUT THE BACK OF MY SHOULDER, SPINE, AND HIP GET BRUISES. I NEED HELP!! Note: I can easily do this on grass, but hard surfaces dig into my bones.
Everyone complains about hitting shoulder/ hip........well if u don't practice u won't improve,I kept doing rolls even tho they hurt and now its really easy and doesn't hurt at all.....so keep practicing, stop complaining
That may be because you have a bruise thats what i found i was like cool it doesn't hurt anymore then my mum said i have a bruise..... so i whatched ryan fords tutorial of the roll (part 1) and it was more in-depth than this one he shows where to come up by drawing on his back and everything
Thank you for making this tutorial! I am a beginner and I watched other channels they said beginners should learn PK roll. I couldn't find a good tutorial and then I saw this. Ten minutes later I got good at PK roll. This helped a lot!
And now my shoulder is getting use to it but I have three doubts -does the head touch the fingers? Does the head need to be within the legs or between the leg and arm while tuckin in...and how to avoid hitting hip?
Hey im twelve and found the best option i found is to get a trampoline and practice jumping off it at different heights until you are comfortable with jumping as high as you can and then roll. My dad and i also built a vault box which is very useful to have on grass in my backyard so i can practice. Your tutorials helped me a lot as well as the guy who runs stunt gym which is a stunt studio that teaches parkour and stunt training. This place is great and if you ever visit sydney look it up
This helped a ton! Thanks a lot. I had injured a ligament in my shoulder a few months back because I tried to roll on top of my shoulder instead of on my back. Again, thanks for the great video!
Dude, thank you this is something I struggled on, everyone seems to show the PK roll but doesn’t show that it’s not a large shoulder roll or barrel roll, but rather you roll in the empty space between the tucked head and back of shoulder. Was always doing it barrel roll way, since watching this I have it down pat, just need to get it clocked in like a second nature.
First start out with like basic rolls. Like do the wrong rolls or how I did it is I start from my bottom and then roll forward or start out with the gymnastic rolls. And then build up to the shoulder roll.
Started PK last week and these videos are phenomenal! I took a run the other day and noticed several things to use as my playground. I also laughed at the 10min cut :)
just to let people know, make sure you do it on the back of your shoulder not on the top because i broke my collarbone doing dive role because i landed on the top of my shoulder.
hunter wiens Try to do some shoulder workouts, take a look out there on the internet. This will build up some muscle in that area, and create a "cushion" should only take a week or so!
hunter wiens there are a few reasons that that could be happening. one is that you don't have enough muscle on the back of your shoulder, the otter reason is you are on the wrong part of the back of your shoulder so i would suggest working on your technique and build some more muscle there. it helps a lot.
It is the best move to start with. It can save you from many injuries and be used for flow. Rolling, tic tacs, and wall runs are great basics to start out with because they are easy to learn without too much risk of injury. After you learn those it is great to go onto cat grabs and vaults. Have fun!
I've practiced the roll plenty of times, and I cannot stress how important it is that you do it properly. One cannot simply just roll however they like and expect that to work. If you jump off something and you land wrong, you can (and I have) really hurt your shoulder, back, hips, or legs.
I was practicing Parkour on my terrace and slipped of from nearly 3/4 height of first floor. Now I'm suffering from infracxullary traction neurofatly of triple left elbow and half of forearm.Still I'm on this probably it will take 2 months for me to heal but now I'm able to do kong vault, spinning vault, monkey vault, palm spin and Tic-Tac.(Above ones are a little tough to learn these vault: lazy vault, basic vault including two handed and single handed:are easy to learn and I could also perform them except of palm spin which im doing it on a low wall)I can't do a wall run until I'm fully healed. Edit:Now I'm practicing diamond roll or whatever,I'm too lazy to google it.Never give up.I was called and Idiot and had to face my parents and guardians and in-between I'm just 13 so why I see adults quitting freerunning and parkour when a 13 year old can bare this.
Thanks man! I was practicing these a few days before I found your video. here's my summary as an EXTREME amateur: Some people may be allergic to grass and won't know it (itches REALLY bad) simply use a sleeved shirt (it also acts as padding), plus practice a lot on a soft medium (grass) before concrete. I bruised my BONES (no joke), super bony guy... thank you sir Flaire for helping me to do it properly!
I knew how to do rolls but just not confident and was very scared, one day when I was training, I went to do a diving kong and my legs couldn't land on the floor, adrenaline rushed through me and I did a parkour roll for the first time, now I'm more confident. moral: overcome your fear by facing it.
if you have trouble with the roll practice standing. Pick a lead arm. Launch with your legs and just follow the line of your shoulder to your hip it's almost a straight line. At the same time you have to tuck your head so that you don't hit your head or your neck. If you let your arm decide the direction you won't ever barrel roll. Lead with the arm and let the body follow. The last one Jesse shows is the most similar to this good to learn.
I started 2 years ago (I'm now 15 years old) I was a bit overweight, and had bad case of asthma that "has a small chance to heal after 7 years if you take your medication for it properly" according to doctors. I lost my asthma in 6 months cause of running, lost weight, gained muscle. I took 3 weeks to learn the roll, not perfect, but very properly. Every day I was going outside 30min twice. I lost weight, asthma, gained muscle and self-esteem. Don't give up, everyone can learn. Good Luck!
For anyone if your shoulder or hip hurts when your doing it on the ground try jumping off your feet just off the floor and landing on your feet and going in for a roll.i use the Diamond technique and it really works if i do the Roll on the ground it tends to hurt, but when i try with a little jump it goes great!Hope this helps
Just a tip for all you people not getting it, you ARE going to feel some impact on your shoulder, because your body is not used to this movement. This impact is great for telling if you're doing this roll correctly, feel where it hurts, if it's at the front of the shoulder, doing it wrong. At the top of the shoulder, doing it wrong. At the upper back of the shoulder, doing it right. Practice this a lot and always be conscious of your form and always review what parts of your body was hitting the ground.
And you know what guys I roll on my right shoulder but hurt my right hip I dunno why also my spine huts too I do the diamond effect but I know I am not doing a completely straight roll and it hurts ,tell me why?!!
Hey thanx I solved the issue of my right hip hurting now my left hip also doesn't hurt I am now doing pk roll itself but my shoulder hurts very badly I tuck in too ...maybe it's the hand placement ...
OMG this was exactly what I needed to see, thank you! My friend is teaching me parkour and he wouldn't actually teach me until I perfected this roll. :D THANK YOU!!!! And for all the other tutorials~
+Travis Trollark you are probably not having enough momentum. If you are rolling on your right shoulder you need to push off with your left leg more so you can go in a straight line across your back (opposite shoulder to opposite hip), and vice versa.
Where doe it hurt? If it's on your shoulder then you need the roll sooner or later, either you're hitting your shoulder or your shoulder-blade. You should be hitting the fleshy area right between. If the pain is in your hip or spine then you're impacting too hard and/or just half-assing it.
Ok then so that means you need to put more force into the roll, don't be scared, and also roll a little sooner so that you hit the fleshy part of your shoulder
When I learned to parkour when I was 7 I got the roll right but I always had problems jumping off real high things. Thanks for this vid it helped a lot.
This is literally the only tutorial that made me realize I had to have a tight and slightly curved back, I tried it and it felt way better than the foot holding with no further instruction the other videos did
I am a beginner myself but instict tells me that landing on your feet and then instantly going into a roll would be the better option as one's legs are naturally stronger and can endure more than one's arms. This means that it would be wise to let your legs take some of the impact and not let all the energy be absorbed by your upper body. I too though await a response from an experienced lad which has been doing parkour for a while.
I got a love for parkour and free running as soon as I saw ur videos ...thnx bro I am on my way to escaping from this world as wind ....I would need some advice though ....to begin.
Hey just wanted to say that I really needed this tutorial because I pretty much taught my self parkour took me a month to get the wall run down but whenever I rolled my head would hurt or my spine would hurt or my shoulder it could just be because I'm all bone and basically no fat and decent muscle and now it's fixed so hurray I can do the roll on concrete now so thanks 😊
i just have to say that your tutorials are very good and descriptive. that's why i only watch your tutorials. i mean seriously, who else can make a 13 minute video on how to roll?
It's pretty important. For times like intentionally jumping off of something, I think you can really do either side, so it's not that important for that, but if you were doing a vault or something and clipped your feet, you wouldn't have much choice of which side you're going to roll over. I'd recommend learning both sides.
Strengthening all of them is probably a good idea. There are lots of exercises you can do to work multiple muscles at once. I'm just going to mention some bodyweight ones right now, since the movements are similar to some parkour movements but you can use weights as well. Pull ups/chin ups (biceps & upper back), push ups variations (chest, arms), handstand progressions (shoulders, core, arms), sprints and distance running (legs, core). Send me a pm if you want a longer answer or clarification.
Ok thanks! I've practised it on soft surfaces before but i am going to do it more now. I live in Sweden and it a lot of snow here right now so it's barely no grass to practise on. We got a place that is kinda like TFA (tempest freerunning academy) but it's called klättercenret. It's a spot there that is really soft i'm going to practise there. Once again, Thanks! :)
Guys practice on soft surfaces like grass or carpet anyway through weeks of pain and training I've found a way that works for me basically its just like a gymnastics roll but when you come in you bend one elbow and roll over it or when your falling down to put you're hands in a diamond shape and bending one elbow (depends what hand you write with) and rolling over it anyway hopes this helps And Sorry for spamming on other peoples comments just trying to help out people and I can't be asked to keep writing it over and over again, therefore I've just copied and pasted it
well rolls are very important for safety and if you're watching a "difficult flip" tutorial, odds are you already know the prerequisites but you need that extra tip to nail it
I have a friend who landed on his clavicle (collarbone) and broke it, just practice on soft surfaces and do it somewhere safe like on a grassy area, and avoid landing on your collarbone, try landing on your shoulderblade rather than directly on your shoulder.
I think you are thinking of a dive roll. When it comes to landing from high places, always land on your feet as it helps to distribute the impact. The dive roll Ryan showed is not meant for landing off of high places, but rather as a breakfall should you fall by accident (foot catches on a Kong or something). Check out Levi's tutorial on how to go into the roll (watch?v=0JoBLxFKkbM). And remember, don't drop from too high before you are ready! Hope this helped.
I got the technigue otherwise completely right but I jeep hurting the BACK of my shoulder not the top. I need some help and tips snd I really would appreciate any help. Thanks! :)
I did this the other day trying to outrun one of my friends we darted to my back porch and since I recently moved here I forgot how high it was (14 feet) I vaulted over the porch and before I landed I remembered when I had been practicing parkour the first move I learned was the roll it helped a lot and I didn't get hurt at all
U need to be tight as Jesse says.I train Aikido,I do this roll easily. You need to know that your hand is going to take that force. So try to this like this: 1.Dont try to fly when doing this move, start slow when u crouch. 2.Like Jesse said dont go over your spine, little diagonal. 3.When u finish try to land on your feet. Practice! You will hurt your back less. When you practise out the move it will go so easily :D I'm not a expert to this move but I know how to do it ^_^ Hope I helped :)
Thank You, Me And My Friend Xavier Used To Climb Big Trees And We Always Ended Up Getting Hurt When We Jump Off Now That I Know This Roll No More Staying Inside To Heal
Like Jessie says in many of his videos you just have to commit. What I like to do is imagine myself doing it over and over again before I actually do it. It gives you a better idea as to how you are going to execute it. Don't forget to try it on soft surfaces first! :)
This has been the best detailed roll tutorial yet and most helpful. My biggest problem is I can roll but I noticed I roll and go angled instead of directly in line of where I'm going which causes me to hit my hip bone/butt. How can I correct this?
yes, you land on your feet first... if you land of the back of your shoulder straight from a jump you will almost def brake a bone on harder surfaces... you have to land on your feet
there are many playgrounds that have the new soft floor or rubber - or go to a beach if you have one in your area and do it in the sand. Hope that helps
well i can help you here, i have had the same proplem, and i faced it first, you should to the normal landing, while you landed you to a instant diamond shape with your hands, then start doing the normal parkour roll, and try different ways of it untill you get it right, hope i helped.
i cant do it long enough to actually play with it, i feel to many pertrutions?... ive tried and quit trying this move too many times, im going back to it again, its really hard...
Thanks for this video I can avoid my mistake because I jumped a pretty high place and i landed on one foot it hurted like hell but I recovered at 3 days or so thanks man !!
Because the roll is a very important foundation in parkour and injury prevention. It helps in all spheres of it and is mandatory to master. The basics are always the most important because they help you be able to do things like flips while being safe...just saying
I'm quite good at the PK roll. However I like to take it to the next level, like diving off of something and then going into the roll. But I always seem to get bad impact and hurt either my head or my shoulder, any tips guys?
The problem that I'm facing is the head placement when rolling. I don't know whether the head is suppose to actually touch the ground and be in line with the back, or it's just hitting the ground and absorbing some of the falling force the whole time? it could cause some damage to the neck if I don't learn how it goes.
The head should never touch the ground because, as you said, it will cause damage to the neck. What you should do is tuck in your head as close as possible to your chest (in other words, just look down at your chest and keep it there as tight as possible). You could also look towards your arm but that may cause problems if you land incorrectly. But yeah, just keep it as close as possible to your body and never let your head touch the ground.
haha Jesse read the comment, you should have said that you don't want your head or neck to hit the ground. Also you don't roll to keep all of your momentum. You roll because of the "Impulse of Force" the continued momentum assists this by keeping your momentum from from pulling down and causing damage, really is just a bonus. Alot of people say if you freefall you have no momentum... not true.

Thank you for making this tutorial! I am a beginner and I watched other channels they said beginners should learn PK roll. I couldn't find a good tutorial and then I saw this. Ten minutes later I got good at PK roll. This helped a lot!
I need help. I usually hit my shoulder/lower spine. AND IT HURTSS
Mine too dude !:(
turn your hips as you come out of the roll.
And now my shoulder is getting use to it but I have three doubts -does the head touch the fingers?
Does the head need to be within the legs or between the leg and arm while tuckin in...and how to avoid hitting hip?
Razor Stan No, the head does not touch the fingers, no, and twist your hips when you come out and roll on the nice fleshy part of your thigh.
UCLA cuber also you should be tucking your chin
Hey im twelve and found the best option i found is to get a trampoline and practice jumping off it at different heights until you are comfortable with jumping as high as you can and then roll. Best roll tutorial

i like how you can do parkour but you also sound educated.
Yah
PaperMind he went to college
Thank you so much! I'm a total beginner and couldn't really find any videos that had this much detail in it! Thanks again!
I never get enough courage to do it... i'm too scared. any motivation?
Its a fucking roll dude I DID IT FIRST TRY!
Nathan Stallard dude stfu
You can do it I've got it down :-D
First start out with like basic rolls. Like do the wrong rolls or how I did it is I start from my bottom and then roll forward or start out with the gymnastic rolls. And then build up to the shoulder roll.
Do it on a king size matress in the store :)
Great tutorial. I've been doing martial arts since I was 8ish, I'm 28 now. Rolling out of an impact is SOOO Important to keeping your body safe.

Love how you said 'noice'
Ernesto Rodriguez Always :)
Thank you so much, I'm a barrel roller myself, the whole "Ryan Doyle" format really really really helped!!!!!
6:48 just play with it... Play with it untill it feels riiigghht. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Could not stop laughing for like 2 minutes!
WTF? Why is that even funny?
Uhh, did that offend you or something? Not sure what you're so mad about...?
Ricky Bronze no? But he just says until it feels right in a total normal way and you are laughing at that for 2 min u wot m8? Lol
Uhhhm what? Still confused as #### xD

Wow that's awful! you doing alright?
Lol yeah I'm fine.
Thats good.
+321pwner serve yourself some pancakes and syrup and you'll be fine eh?

weeaboo
Kirigaya Kazuto That's a good moral. Except when I don't face my fear unintentionally, I don't face it at all!
Kirigaya Kazuto O overcomed the fear on rolling on the ground but somehow I still hurting my spine...

man you are like my saviour... i've been practicing this roll for like ages... thx so freakkng much
lol I already am a master at this, I have been doing this exact same type of roll since I was like 3...

this is the main move i'm trying to master this month (along with the dive pk roll & kong). gotta master the basics.
I always have problem with hitting my elbows. Any help people?
The elbow when going into the roll or the elbow when coming out?
I think when I am coming out.
Yes got some help keep them in your chest k
i was like doing the standing roll and got the same problem. any suggests?

Razor Stan If your right shoulder and right hip and spine hurt then your doing barrel rolls
Hey thanx I solved the issue of my right hip hurting now my left hip also doesn't hurt I am now doing pk roll itself but my shoulder hurts very badly I tuck in too ...maybe it's the hand placement ...
very good tutorial. I love to see people who care about safety getting the word out properly
just play with it, play with it until it feels right
Sounds dirty

I tried this and now I have a broken back
lies how could you have a broken back just because of a roll

i just have to say that your tutorials are very good and descriptive. that's why i only watch your tutorials. i mean seriously, who else can make a 13 minute video on how to roll?
It's pretty important. For times like intentionally jumping off of something, I think you can really do either side, so it's not that important for that, but if you were doing a vault or something and clipped your feet, you wouldn't have much choice of which side you're going to roll over. I'd recommend learning both sides.
Thanx Jesse yuve been a lot of help!!
I have been learning this! You are really awesome coach I've met! Thank you so much, master!
Excellent turorial. Thanks.
Thanks LaFlairParkour! Helped me a lot... At first I didn't have enough courage to do it, but you motivated me! THANKS!
Guys practice on soft surfaces like grass or carpet anyway through weeks of pain and training I've found a way that works for me basically its just like a gymnastics roll but when you come in you bend one elbow and roll over it or when your falling down to put you're hands in a diamond shape and bending one elbow (depends what hand you write with) and rolling over it anyway hopes this helps
And
Sorry for spamming on other peoples comments just trying to help out people and I can't be asked to keep writing it over and over again, therefore I've just copied and pasted it
this is one of the best roll tutorial i've seen. :) great work breaking down the concepts
You are a really good teacher.
well rolls are very important for safety and if you're watching a "difficult flip" tutorial, odds are you already know the prerequisites but you need that extra tip to nail it
I LOVE YOU LAFLAIR AND YOUR PARKOURING TUTORIALS
la flair makes one of the best parkour tutorial...atleast for me..
I have a friend who landed on his clavicle (collarbone) and broke it, just practice on soft surfaces and do it somewhere safe like on a grassy area, and avoid landing on your collarbone, try landing on your shoulderblade rather than directly on your shoulder.
you are the most mature person i have ever seen, i mean 80% of the people giggled or laughed at some of the things you said.
Thanks! :)
Thanks jessie now i know how to roll perfect but i still need to practice ..
I did this the other day trying to outrun one of my friends we darted to my back porch and since I recently moved here I forgot how high it was (14 feet) I vaulted over the porch and before I landed I remembered when I had been practicing parkour the first move I learned was the roll it helped a lot and I didn't get hurt at all
Holy Crap that roll demo at 6:27 looked so smooth. You are a true ninja.
U need to be tight as Jesse says.I train Aikido,I do this roll easily. You need to know that your hand is going to take that force. So try to this like this:
1.Dont try to fly when doing this move, start slow when u crouch.
2.Like Jesse said dont go over your spine, little diagonal.
3.When u finish try to land on your feet.
Practice! You will hurt your back less. When you practise out the move it will go so easily :D I'm not a expert to this move but I know how to do it ^_^
Hope I helped :)
Thank You, Me And My Friend Xavier Used To Climb Big Trees And We Always Ended Up Getting Hurt When We Jump Off Now That I Know This Roll No More Staying Inside To Heal
wow thanks!!! i finally mastered the parkour roll :DD
This was VERY helpful, thank you so much!!!!
I tried the Ryan Doyle one and I finally did it!
yes, you land on your feet first... if you land of the back of your shoulder straight from a jump you will almost def brake a bone on harder surfaces...
you have to land on your feet
thanks man. i really got this roll down now
there are many playgrounds that have the new soft floor or rubber - or go to a beach if you have one in your area and do it in the sand.
I am 13 and i start training using your videos..you are awesome!!
Thanks for this video I can avoid my mistake because I jumped a pretty high place and i landed on one foot it hurted like hell but I recovered at 3 days or so thanks man !!
Lol I remember watching this video when I was first starting parkour. 7 years later and im still actively training, still a good video.
Because the roll is a very important foundation in parkour and injury prevention. It helps in all spheres of it and is mandatory to master. The basics are always the most important because they help you be able to do things like flips while being safe...just saying
i practice this about month, do i need to practice more or try another version?
Thanks for teaching roll now i can go do extreme tag vid. Not sure how to put it on youtube but ill try my best! THANKS JESSE LA FLAIR
I'm quite good at the PK roll. However I like to take it to the next level, like diving off of something and then going into the roll. But I always seem to get bad impact and hurt either my head or my shoulder, any tips guys?
Get your rolls good first. Learn how to roll while on the ground and keep perfecting it. Then perfect your method of falling into the roll.
This is my first n most effective teqnique i learn from u thxxx!!!
Thanks really good video learned it perfectly in a couple tries
The problem that I'm facing is the head placement when rolling. I don't know whether the head is suppose to actually touch the ground and be in line with the back, or it's just hitting the ground and absorbing some of the falling force the whole time? it could cause some damage to the neck if I don't learn how it goes.
If you roll over you right shoulder, try to rake your head as long down against your left shoulder, so that it does not hit the ground.
Alot of people say if you freefall you have no momentum... not true.
this is the best roll tutorial there is (it still took me like a month to learn it btw)
Great tutorial, I'm gonna start practicing. Used to know this 25 yrs ago but I forgot ;-)
Thanks a lot!
