Just bought my second rig after totaling my other inw I had after 7 years. Prior I had no experience on DD15 engines as I had an ISX. Very thankful for your videos.
Thank you so much for this video. This is the only video on UA-cam that explains everything and the option to change just the upper part. Volvo is very reluctant to sell just the repair kit.. My breather is dripping oil.from it's exhaust pipe. Ofc if it is not spinning the oil is getting dumped outside through the exhaust pipe. I will.order the repair kit online it's around 230 vs 1600 from volvo.
I never would imagine that the blow off vapors could cause sludge. interesting. I cleaned mine last year and it was sludge free. It spins fast after I turn my truck off. At least I feel better about changing my oil often. I use full synthetic. Expensive, but, my truck runs like a champ. Thanks for this video.
Hi Joe, you mention your crankcase breather spins fast when you turn it off, is that normal?. when I turn my truck off I can hear IT spinning and actually makes a whistling sound, is that what your does?. Thank you
Hi ! Thanks for explaing this. Mechanic has had my car for a week..ordered and received the part 2 days ago. Now he says..3 more days to pick it up. Now i realize its not a big job. He just put me on the bottom of his list. I will change my mechanic after this. Im a 71 yr old woman..guess he thinks i wouldnt know how long it takes. You explained this very clearly. Thanks
You know that’s pretty cool, I kind of like to get myself prepped up a little bit so when I do have a problem I have a little bit of knowledge so I can fix it, I bought the kid They sell for that and I have that saved up just in case brakes on me I can take it I’ll clean it and put them back together, thank you friend, 👋👌👍
Hey man question. I just had mine replaced on d13 engine. But the new one now makes a noise for like 3 seconds after i shut the engine. Is that normal or its supposed to not sound at all?
Hi, I have a 2013 International 4300 with maxxforce engine. I recently had the turbos replaced because I was told my turbos were bad. So I got them replaced but I still see that engine oil coming out of the crankcase breather along with smoke. And also where you check the engine oil level, there’s smoke coming out. You can see that when the dip stick is removed. Is that a reason why engine is loosing oil like everyday?
Looks like the breather hose that comes out of the side of the CVV on my 2016 Volvo 670 has cracked in half. There was a little smoke coming from there and I think oil as well.
I like your video I'm having problems with my International and I just bought that piece since I'm an old mechanic I like to take things off and fix them is there any way that you can clean this and put it back on.
The plastic part inside the oil separator/ Crankcase breather cannot be clean, since soot accumulates around it and you can notice how gets into really tight places. You should replace the whole oil separator. Volvo offers a kit to replace just the top part of the oil separator/Crankcase breather (this apply for Volvo engines only). For International, it depends, if that one has Cummins Engine does NOT use Crankcase breather as you should know. Maxxforce and A26 engines use Crankcase breather but Maxxforce is a pain to replace it, so you should use a new part instead of cleaning the old one, A26 seems to be a bit friendly but still same opinion like Maxxforce. Glad that you like my video and I hope this help you and never is too late to learn new tricks.
@@LetstalkDIESEL thanks for the quick replying so quickly I already bought the piece so looks like I am going to replace it and you're right maxxforce 13 it is a pain in the ass to replace it.

Thanks bro nice explanation I have Volvo d13 808500 miles my crank case make noise abt 3 min aft stop engine little bit oil leaking from block n crank case so I have to replace whole part or only gasket please reply
You could replace just the top part of the breather, Volvo dealer sells the kit for that. Also, you could replace the whole assembly as well, but it will be more expensive, if you are planning to use an aftermarket part, be sure it is from a recommended place and has good reviews before buying it. Thanks for watching.

It will make turbos start sucking up oil and you will lose power just happened to one of my trucks started leaking first we couldn't find where it was coming from then the turbos let go
If your crankcase oil separator still making noise after your turn off the engine, you can listen it, if you hear like a grinding noise when spinning, replace it. If no sound is found ayer turning off the engine, then your crankcase oil separator is fine (unless leaking oil). I hope this information help you and that for support the channel.
That could be a reason, but the stop light usually turns on when the crankcase pressure sensor failed. Try to use the PTT (Volvo software) to be sure that it is reason why your truck is turning off.
My truck turned off while I was running. No lights on dash came on at all,No gauges were low,Everything was perfect,I eas checking my gauges during the whole trip,Then I made a left on a stop sign and as soon as I straightened the truck to take that street my truck turned off. I really hope you can write back soon because I have 5 cars on my trailer that need to be delivered these following days. Thank you so much for your time and your videos. God bless you.
It is NOT normal that smoke come out from the breather, if you can see white smoke, there is the possibility that there is coolant intrusion into the oil pan. First check your oil color, usually water makes it milky, if everything is ok with your engine oil, then go underneath your truck and pay attention around the outlet of the breather, if you can see drops of water coming out then it means something is going on with your engine. I cannot tell you that is your problem exactly but you should take your vehicle the nearest repair shop for a look. I hope this help you and May God Bless You. Thanks for the support and watching the channel.
I got the code for cvv but want to ask, if i have oil leaking on both side of truck and all the way back to fifth wheel part of frame, could this still be the issue?
You might want to take a closer look to your breather and make sure that is the reason for the oil leak, but if you say there is oil in the other side of the engine, it might be something else as well. Try to clean your engine properly and check it out again. Alternatively, you could let a technician or mechanic take a look to pinpoint the problem faster. Thanks for watching.
What do you mean with “Illuminate”? Usually, you can removed the top part of the crankcase breather but you must remove it from the engine block... it will not leak oil from there because the oil level must be below of the breather position in the block. If you notice any oil leak that will be from the breather itself. Just put a small oil pan underneath. I hope this help with your question and thanks for watching.
Got very little fume/smoke coming from oil cap. 2015 Volvo d13, 390k miles. Breather never replaced. Any idea whether it's bad Breather or engine problem? Thanks
You could replace the oil crankcase breather first, then see if there is any difference. If problem persists you need to take your vehicle to a repair shop for further diagnostic. Thanks for watching and support to the channel.
Alex when i remove the breather on the Volvo ( the 3 screws) does the whole top half of the unit come out together, i took one off today but the bottom half stayed on, do i gently tap on it to remove it, or is this a sign that this part is no good I'm needing to replace the seals on mine.Any reply would be great and thanks for all of the helpful videos.
The bottom part of the breather is aluminum, so just hit it a bit, or use a flathead screwdriver to separate the plastic top part and it should come off easy, like you said gently because, usually, it is not that tight. Sometimes, that happens that even after you remove the 3 screws still stick to the bottom part. So, just make sure when you install everything back, use everything that comes inside the kit. I hope this help and thanks for staying around.
Hi my 2009 Volvo D16 is using a lot of oil, gallon a day and Volvo said maybe the separator stopped spinning or a valve in the separater unit is not working, my blow by tube is dry it’s expensive to replace, $2000 they recommend a lot of expensive repairs, what are your thoughts?
1st. Wash your truck underneath, clean all the places with oil, try to clean it the best you can. 2nd. Run the engine for at least an hour, then go under your truck and pay attention around the engine area, perhaps you would be able to spot the leak. If you find the leak like this, try to see if you can fix yourself or requires a Technician. 3rd. If you cannot see any leak with the engine just seating and idling, then drive test your vehicle for few minutes in the highway, that way you will put more stress into the gaskets or the Crankcase breather. The leak might appear with this method. 4th. If after all these steps your truck still not showing a major oil leak, then perhaps your truck has another issue, that is not related it with an oil leak. I hope these steps help you to find out your problem. Thanks for watching.
Hello sir. I got a code that says crankcase ventilation system disconnected, i don’t see anything wrong with hoses, but it seems like there is some rumbling noise coming from crankcase filter when the truck is on, when I turn it off, there is no noise, so I’m little bit confused. Do you think the crankcase filter is bad,or clogged or something else? 🤔 Thank you
After shutting down the truck, pay attention close to crankcase breather area, if you hear a noise coming from there, probably it is the oil separator (crankcase) the problem. I hope this help you.
If the DDS60 has the DPF system on board from factory then yes, otherwise, older models do NOT have Crankcase breather (below 2008). Thanks for watching.
Is it possible that the motor can damage the crank case filter because I put one in april 2020 because it was leaking oil and a code came on so I replaced it and problem solved 7 months later while I was driving I heard a pop noise on the driver side I stop and noticed that I was spilling oil I thought that it was my crank case so I replaced turn on the truck it seems everything normal 15 or 20 min later I heard the same pop noise what could it be
Hey bro, I have d13 engine 2014 freightliner cascadia. I had my truck sit for 4 months due to covid and then i took it out for a spin the other day and got this MIL light/check engine light on and when i checkeed the codes..it said spn5444 fmi1 . It reads that oil breather too low. So i changed the breather, speed sensor and check the wiring but the problem still exist. Please advise..
If you replaced the breather and the speed sensor on the top of the breather, it might the engine harness your problem, it is possible to fix the harness (if the damage wire is not to close to the MCM junction or inside the hard cover around the oil pan). If you had repaired the engine harness before this problem, the only option is to change the engine harness. This is just my personal opinion, for a proper diagnostic take your vehicle to repair shop to know your exact issue, ok? Thanks for watching and for the support to the channel.
Yea. Mechanic found out that there was a problem with the wiring somewhere around the engine so he bypassed the wire through another way i guess. Now the code is gone and looks good.
Podría trabajar, pero quizás botaría mucho aceite de el respiradero, no le puedo contestar correctamente por que aquí no se permite anular el respiradero de esa manera por las emisiones. Gracias por ver el video.
Thanks for sharing My 2014 d13 had a Stop engine warning and the code.. SA 16 DTC P113500 which says online crankcase pressure too high you think replacing the breather should fix it or it's a crankcase or oil pressure sensors.? Thank you
I recommend you to change the Crankcase breather Sensor if the STOP light is coming on and off and Crankcase breather/Oil separator if it is leaking oil. Oil pressure sensor has nothing to do with the breather unless you see in the intrument cluster the oil pressure gauge is not reading correctly. I hope this advice helps to your issue.
You do NOT need to drain the oil in order to change the crankcase breather. This apply for all Diesel engines. (Detroit Diesel, Paccar, International, Cummins and Volvo/Mack).
There s a open type crankcase for some trucks like maxforce dt. They made them close type wich what happen. the CAC get oily and plugg due to oil from crankcase. But the new stlyle open crancase its made to send oil or blow by to the atmosphere not tilo the CAC anymore. do you know or has any picture of that new open crankcase. Its call open type..
Ok, now I understand your question. Those in that kind of engine (Maxxforce 13 older design), you have to replace the whole assembly, I did one of those once, hard to remove it from that engine, so if you want to replace just remove to whole assembly, I do not have photos for it, but if that it is hard to remove just replace it, remember if it leaks again because you just replace one part and put it back it will cost you more money in the long run. In the newest 2019 A26 engine and others, they removed that and it is like you said... just going out to the atmosphere.
There is no schedule interval to change your oil separator/crankcase breather. The rule of thumb is to change when it is leaking oil from the gasket or from the outlet side of the breather. Also, when a strong noise (like humming or grinding) comes from it. Those are the three things that usually requires to replace it. I hope this help with your question. Thanks for watching.
My crank case separator only leak at square gasket , at engine valve, my separated or filter can be cleaned with diesel or brake cleaner , let me know please,
First, make sure your truck is clean before start an inspection of any leak. Also, if your truck is leaking oil from that side it might be the gasket. So I suggest you to clean around all the areas you see leaks and then take a closer look where is leaking when the engine is running.
Yes , I cleaned with brackets cleaner, and I see oil leak from square gasket, where the assembly connects the engine wall, just help me how to remove and can I clean the upper round separator with Desil or brack cleaner
If your engine is DD13/15/16 you might need to replace the crankcase breather speed sensor, it is on top of the breather. If that doesn’t work perhaps is a harness issues. This is my personal opinion, for a proper diagnostic please take your vehicle to a repair shop. Thank you for support.
I am in California. Unfortunately, I do not own a repair shop. Perhaps, in the future, for now just stay tuned for more content to come. Thanks for watching.
Check the engine oil level is fill properly. Perhaps both Crankcase breather are bad. You should get a new one to eliminate that possibility. Also, check the surface area where the Crankcase breather gasket sits maybe it is damage. Try to apply a thing layer of silicone around the gasket, this might help to prevent future leaks. I hope this help you with your issue and thanks for watching.
@@LetstalkDIESEL had freightliner change this part now have blow by blowing out like crazy and it's leaking oil do you have any answers to why this would happen was not doing this when I took it in to the freightliner shop
Can you just remove this, take it apart and clean it? I have a dd15 engine. I don't see any broken parts. Seems like you could just clean it up a little..
You might be able to do that and may work temporary but the problem is inside the spinning plastic cylinder and the bearing, since it gets clog with soot that slows down the cylinder, even if you clean it and may cause the breather to fail. So the best thing you can do is to replace the whole crankcase breather so you will not run into problems later, like a oil pan gasket leak since the pressure cannot be release properly because a clog breather. Freightliner does NOT sell the kit to rebuild the crankcase.
@@LetstalkDIESEL yeah, I just took mine off and took it apart. It's not serviceable. You can separate the top plastic part, and the down pipe, but that's about it. You can't actually take the spinning piece out of the plastic housing. But mine spins very freely. It still leaks a whole lot of oil. That and the oil pan gasket, and also the camshaft housing leaking. I'll just replace it, and take it to the shop to have the oil pan and camshaft housing gaskets replaced. Thanks for the reply tho.
You can clean old one I went to buy new $500 mechanic told me just clean it no need to buy new
y haciendo un bypass del aceite que retorne al carter?
I have the same issue with my 2015 frirghtlinner DD15 and thinking about changing it myself but do I need to drain oil out or not?
You do NOT have to drain the engine oil to replace the crankcase breather.
Thanks for the advice!!!!!!
Hello Bro ,
I want to illuminate the crank case spinner . Could I remove the filter plates? Or would oil come out blow by ? Thanks
@@LetstalkDIESEL , I think he is saying, "eliminate". He wants to get rid of the spinning wheel, lol.
How do you change the crankcase filter on a Volvo D13
I am planning to make a video about it, stay tune.
@@LetstalkDIESEL will that make the truck run different. If you don't change it what could happen?
Got very little fume/smoke coming from oil cap.
2015 Volvo d13, 390k miles.
Breather never replaced.
Any idea whether it's bad Breather or engine problem?
Thanks
You could replace the oil crankcase breather first, then see if there is any difference. If problem persists you need to take your vehicle to a repair shop for further diagnostic. Thanks for watching and support to the channel.
Thank you good job. 👍👍
Thanks I never could figure it out just add oil
Good sir nice explain please make more video regarding Freightliner cascadia
I will try. Thanks for your support.
@@LetstalkDIESEL Thank you so much sir, for the response, I will try that for sure. 🤝🙏
Does the Detroit 60 series have it?
If the DDS60 has the DPF system on board from factory then yes, otherwise, older models do NOT have Crankcase breather (below 2008). Thanks for watching.
Does a 1994 international school bus DT466 have a crank case breather?
I do not think so, I start to see crankcase breather around 2009 trucks.
@@LetstalkDIESEL ok thank you.
Is it possible that the motor can damage the crank case filter because I put one in april 2020 because it was leaking oil and a code came on so I replaced it and problem solved 7 months later while I was driving I heard a pop noise on the driver side I stop and noticed that I was spilling oil I thought that it was my crank case so I replaced turn on the truck it seems everything normal 15 or 20 min later I heard the same pop noise what could it be
Is the crankcase factory new or aftermarket? Is the pop noise constantly? (When engine running at idle) is still leaking oil with the pop noise?
Hey. Question.. my is leaking coolant!!🤯 any idea!?? Thanks.
You need to take your truck to a repair shop for proper diagnostic, do it as soon as possible. Thanks for the support.
Hey bro,
I have d13 engine 2014 freightliner cascadia.
Thanks for sharing
My 2014 d13 had a Stop engine warning and the code..
Do I have to empty the oil off my engine before changing crankcases breather
You do NOT need to drain the oil in order to change the crankcase breather. This apply for all Diesel engines. (Detroit Diesel, Paccar, International, Cummins and Volvo/Mack).
Thanks and I forgot to mention I have a detroit engine thanks for the info
Whats the new update one wich ls open type to avoid oil going to charge cooler??
Can you rewrite your question? Charge Air Cooler and Crankcase Breather are two different parts and are NOT relate to each other.
Who knows how often should I change my crankcase breather(filter) ???
There is no schedule interval to change your oil separator/crankcase breather. The rule of thumb is to change when it is leaking oil from the gasket or from the outlet side of the breather. Also, when a strong noise (like humming or grinding) comes from it. Those are the three things that usually requires to replace it. I hope this help with your question. Thanks for watching.
@@LetstalkDIESEL Thank you
Hi what will hapen Continue to drive Bad oil separator
I changed it but I still have the code Engine Crankcase Breather Oil Separator Speed
SPN 5444 FMI 1 what I have to do?
If your engine is DD13/15/16 you might need to replace the crankcase breather speed sensor, it is on top of the breather. If that doesn’t work perhaps is a harness issues. This is my personal opinion, for a proper diagnostic please take your vehicle to a repair shop. Thank you for support.
Hey Alex where are you located?
I am in California. Unfortunately, I do not own a repair shop. Perhaps, in the future, for now just stay tuned for more content to come. Thanks for watching.
Let’s talk DIESEL. Thanks for the reply, you don’t do side work?
At the moment, no. I will let you know if I do it in the future.
Thank you sir
Took it off like older models i ratter have more oil pressure to my bearings than to this waste
My Freightliner dd15 it's leaking a Lot of oil from the Crank case i chance for another used one and same thing leaking a Lot of oil whats wrong???
Check the engine oil level is fill properly. Perhaps both Crankcase breather are bad. You should get a new one to eliminate that possibility. Also, check the surface area where the Crankcase breather gasket sits maybe it is damage. Try to apply a thing layer of silicone around the gasket, this might help to prevent future leaks. I hope this help you with your issue and thanks for watching.
@@LetstalkDIESEL so you think is bad the Crank case bad is not leaking from gasket it's from the plastic Pipe of the Crank case thanks for answering

@@LetstalkDIESEL had freightliner change this part now have blow by blowing out like crazy and it's leaking oil do you have any answers to why this would happen was not doing this when I took it in to the freightliner shop
estoy fuera de los Estados Unidos
It would have a problem for the engine
It is part of the job, because when I really want to know something relate it to the engine or other parts, touching textures or fluids might help me to understand better what is going on. Of course, in regular basis I use gloves. Thanks for watching.
