Love his style. Low center of gravity. Good speed. Very inspired. I'm going to try this style at my home break in Oceanside. Very peaky waves with some stretching shoulders here in San Diego but u didn't hear it from me.
Great clip. Big fan of that spot. Thanks for sharing. Guess Bobo was one of the better surfers from Kauai back then. I've only heard of guys like Carlos Andrade and the Kinimakas. His style so reminds me of David Nuuhiwa. Is he still surfing actively? Hope so.
Bobo (Stanford "Satomu"" Morinaka) was my high school classmate @ Kauai High School / Class of 1968. We grew up in the same Lihue neighborhood playing Little League Baseball and hanging out at the Kalapaki Bay seawall on Kauai in the 1960's. I watched the entire scene unfold throughout the early 60's surfing era, before I left for Oakland, CA to attend art school. I met my college roommate, Keone Downing in the 1970's, straight from Kamehameha High School in Honolulu, at The California College of Arts & Crafts, now known as CCAC, as an undergraduate. We became life-long friends. We also became interested in Photography, Graphic Design, Multi-Media and Video. Today, We are beginning to compile surfing history from a Local Hawaiian Islands perspective, that never made the pages of mainland surfing magazines or film / videos. .....before the stories get lost for future generations. ~ Stay tuned. ~ Aloha.... BOOM Hawaii ~~~ NATION of Pacific Ocean Islanders ~~~ POI Nation.
Use to surf there from the mid 80's to 2004. You gotta walk past Bulls to get to the break. They stare at you ready to charge. Was ready to hide behind a tree. A little ways down South from there is Pipes. I surfed there on a big day and after a ride you would end up on dry reef. But wasn't sharp. Kinda nuts place.
We were honored to meet this legend today! Aloha Bobo!
This was filmed in 1970. I just saw Bobo at our 50th Kauai High School (Class of 1968 Reunion) and he was as cool as ever. (April, 2018) Kauai, Hawaii
excellent BoBo
