  • The amount allocated for provision of free sanitary towels was slashed by 99 million shillings in the financial year 2013/2014, this is from the 300 million shillings allocated previously to the ministry of education for the provision of sanitary towels to 568,925 needy girls between class 6 and 8, a fraction of the 2.5 million in need of the towels. Do you know what this means? Only 1\3 of the targeted girls will benefit. Judy Kosgei was in Marigat, Baringo county one of the districts which has never benefited from the program and found out shocking details of how girls miss school during their menses and opt use goat skin, chicken feathers, soil and even leaves during their menses for lack of an option.

This is so awful and saddening to watch, but it made me realize how privileged I am to have access to pads and tampons
Also, although I agree that diva cups might be a better and reusable solution, I think that they are impractical in some communities because the women may not have the means to clean them out. And because diva cups go inside the body they may leave the women vulnerable for infections and diseases

This is what One Girl, a charity here is Australia that supplies affordable sanitary pads to girls in Sierra Leone, says about the issue:
"Q: Why don't you use reusable fabric pads instead?
A: After surveying 500 women and girls, we discovered that many of them find it embarrassing to have to wash their soiled cloth in public washing areas. Because Sierra Leone is a developing country, they don’t have the same hygienic means of washing as we do.

Respect to women! If God is in control then the Nature- The Creator- rules. Men and women have their givens and short-comings in secrets. If by chance or ordained man/woman meet each other so be it, but let us be the judge. Let them be! The key should be love. All God's creation is good for purpose for His glory in the meantime till we depart this world. Just my opinion!

I see in Nairobi public schools where girls are issued with sanitary pads yet some of them are well of. Let provide to those who really need it by conducting a survey before rolling out a program.

There are sustainable washable pads and cups available that girls can count on month after month for years instead of struggling to get what they need month after month. Check out Days for Girls and Ruby Cups. Both work in Kenya and beyond. This issue is all over the world. Everywhere that families have to choose between food and pads, they have to choose food. Girls and women suffer many consequences as a result. We can change this together.

Appalling. Where does Foreign Aid go in these countries? Kenyan women and girls need to stop hanging their heads in shame and take to the streets in their millions until this situation is rectified. What about those cups to catch the menstrual flow...they are reusable and I doubt that providing these to needy women would be a great expense. Nothing is thought through or implemented. Nobody cares and the silence and shame surrounding the subject is aiding this. I'd rather be dead than a woman in these countries.
