some neighbors tried to get our 8 foot ramp shut down by the city in portland maine. It was 16 inches too close to the property line. Within the day of getting the notice we had our buddys rigging company over and moved that sucker 3/8" over the line that was up to code. Town surveyors had to come use some serious laser equipment to ensure our work was within code. We made sound redirection walls to project noise at their bedroom.
Is rollerblading a crime? Put it back in the XGames. XGames got its start because of of blading in the 90's.

Happens all the time. There was a gun range a few miles down the road from me that had been there for decades. Eventually houses started to be built around it. Before long they were complaining about the noise and eventually got it torn down. I don't think that should have happened but it's common.

The new neighbors were the ones complaining. Did they not read their disclosures from the sellers that there is a skateboard ramp next door? It's always the new people that want things changed. Do your research before buying a house. Great job on fighting this.

also, it is skateboarding in your backyard vs someone getting some peace and quiet in their home. i skated for 11 years and understand that having skateboarding going on constantly by your house is not quiet and would absolutely suck under certain scenarios like having a newborn.

I grew up hearing the races every weekend then had to drive all the way to Carlsbad to race. Now my local track in Phoenix is going away. The city is a loud place, when I'm not paying the bills I go to my property with no neighbors for miles and make lots of noise on the mill or lathe. ;)

Unfortunately, this is a tale as old as time. This happens a lot to farmers when their neighbors sell out and the new home owners complain about the dust, smell, and noise the farmer makes.

All they would have likely had to do is have a reasonable conversation with the ramp lord. Im imagine everyone could have pitched in, builts some cheap sound barrier structures or somethin. Neighbors at our backyard bowls and ramps that are respectful and supportive get that back tenfold. People move into a neighborhood where this skateboard ramp has been there for over 10 years. I'm sure when they moved into the neighborhood they were warned about it's presence but they moved in anyways. Good on the owner to fight back.

Glad city council sided with skater. I absolutely despise people who buy homes next to trains, skate parks, race tracks, etc and then proceed to try and sue everyone. It's so stupid, why would you move there if you knew you may potentially have an issue with noise, a home is THE biggest purchase of your life for most people you'd think they would consider all of the small things.

Heck no I wouldn’t move next to an airport or concert venue. But if it was a great house and nice neighborhood then yes most people would complain about noise. It’s not a city skatepark. The skateboard noise is one thing, the crowd, especially when riled and/ or intoxicated is probably another. The term “grandfathered in” is to protect people in these situations. If you don’t want to hear air planes flying around don’t move next to an airport, if you don’t like the sound of drag racing don’t move next to a race track and so on. My only issue would be that it was built properly so if a storm comes it’s gonna be in one piece not flying pieces smashing into my house and there isn’t super loud parties there every day like the entire town is using it all hours of the night.
@pachuco1815 agreed! This man has been instrumental in keeping many kids engaged and involved in something positive - this will be his legacy, and I applaud him. However, I will also say that those ramps are very loud. My neighbor 3 doors down had one when the neighborhood kids were growing up. A BIG ramp, not wide but very high. Very loud. Good thing my kid was one of those enjoying the ramp and we were all good friends! Every one of those kids are now nearly 30 years old and such good humans!! Love every one of them - it was worth the annoying sound.
People say ‘put your phones away’, but I say ‘put your kids phones away’. Let them just be kids and learn some self-confidence and skill through something productive.

To be fair you can see the Airport, And was probably heavily advertised. This albeit, absolute Karen, most likely didn't find out till their first 10pm skating sesh. Because i don't really see many rules saying you need to declare that you have a vert ramp in your backyard, pretty niche. So really wasn't either fault but honestly the person who moved in next door would have had more luck complaining to the real estate who sold it to them. And worked out some terms to be refunded and moved elsewhere.
@jazzmeltsface your right all along. I'll give you a fun story though. I went through USMC boot camp in San Diego. I had the top bunk in squad bay on the 3rd floor facing the San Diego Airport, maybe 500 yards and a fence between me and a runway. I definitely would have passed out each night not dreaming of rushing that fence, but as soon as we got released, going to introduce myself to those guys and drop in a few times on the way to tijuana 🤠

Did that one guy really have the nerve to say that his quality of life has been ruined by the skate ramp?
He is the one that moved into that neighborhood, He is trying to do destroy the quality of someone else's life that had been that way years before that guy moved in.
As kids, we had the same complaints from neighbors. We ended up finding old carpet on the curb and hung it up on the backside of the ramp like baffles, and the noise went down significantly... crisis avoided.
Damn the entitlement is real with these people. DOnt buy a house next to a vert ramp if you dont want to hear the noise
They will regret this act of war until they take the big snooze haha
my neighbor had a halfpipe in their back yard back in the mid 80's, everybody from all over was there almost every weekend just to watch the skaters

Why’d the guy move in next to a ramp if he didn’t like skaters? GTFOOH! The restrictions are dumb too! This is America. It’s private property. We pay property taxes to criminals in government and they still have the audacity to try to tell us what we can and can’t do on OUR private property.
Bravo to Vista city council, got something right for a change. I’ve been in Vista for 15 years now and it is becoming increasingly gentrified. I’d rather these kids were skating than breaking into my car or truck. Keep skating and fighting for your rights!

@@HansM-bg8lm prices along the coast are so high, people are moving into Vista. The Paseo project is just one example of the gentrification. All kinds of new home construction, new businesses, etc. Good and bad, good for me for home equity, bad for commuters as traffic is insanely heavier. Same is going on with Oceanside, San Marcos and Escondido. Some of the folks moving here may think it’s a quiet suburban neighborhood, but it’s becoming more city-like. Also, Skate culture has been here for a long time, too. Just look up Bob Burnquist's mega ramp! Pretty insane.
Gentrified does not equal car break ins.

Reminds me of how recently people who moved into new homes near Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey were trying to get the racetrack shut down. That track is famous and has been there since the 50's. You can't move near a racetrack then complain about the noise.
I dont even skateboard anymore, but I'd love to live next door to a ramp like that just so I could go out and watch people skate. Waking up to a cup of coffee, a joint, and seeing the neighbors stick a mctwist sounds awesome 😂

Typically when someone has a dog that barks all day it's because they keep it chained or locked up all day. So not a great comparison.

That vert ramp is also the same one from the Encinitas YMCA before they remodeled. ALOT of skate history in that ramp.

People are literally going outside and improving the quality of their life with physical activity and hobby. Maybe he should join them, it might actually improve his quality of life.

Everywhere I've lived for 50 yrs I've had skate ramps and neighbors complain but I never stopped. I skated until the sunset, skateboarding is no longer a crime.
