No other futuristic racing game so far comes close to scratching the same itch as F-Zero in terms of precise and twitchy control, unforgiving challenge, or even personality. F-Zero is worth bringing back but it'd be one hell of an uphill battle to sell more people on F-Zero and Nintendo clearly isn't interested in making the effort for it since they already have semi-similar properties that already appeal to a much wider audience.
@@magicjohnson3121 Fast RMX is solid but it's closer in feel to Wipeout instead of F-Zero. The handling in general is more floaty in Fast RMX. Not bad but it doesn't scratch the same itch.
I hate that other futuristic racers have been neglected. Wipeout doesn't get new iterations often, the Extreme-G series is dead, and other games like Kinetica never got sequels.
Someone recently posted an 'F-Zero 99' idea on the F-Zero subreddit. Basicly the SNES F-Zero online with 98 other racers. After each lap only the the top X racers can continue. (Just like in the original game, only now going until 1 person is left). So a 99-game for Switch online, but with F-Zero. To me that sounds like a perfect way to reintroduce F-Zero. Anyone interested should look it up on the F-Zero subreddit.
I sincerely appreciate that Nagoshi continues to show interest in a serious continuation of the F-Zero franchise, even if he is seemingly talking to a gigantic Nintendo-shaped brick wall. I'm all too confident that the series may not be able to "innovate" past its current state, but GX alone is such a unique game that I would not mind seeing *more* of that. The future of racing released 18 years ago, and I feel like the whole world deserves another taste of "the future".
Realistically f zero likely would have to innovate to even be successful considering f zero never sold super well so of they just make or rereleases an f-zero title really similar to old ones it is likely to fail
Miyamoto's statement regarding the "oh, we must innovate at ALL COSTS" is a pretty frustrating statement primarily because this entire notion isn't shared with half the games Nintendo farts out. Kirby, for example, isn't exactly evolving much. It's the same game with a new mild gimmick every game, yet the forced spirit of innovation isn't preventing those games from shipping. So many years have passed, a remake of GX would be worth it just because an entire new generation could have their hand at it. What do I want from a new F-Zero game? Well, F-Zero. You don't need to reinvent the wheel every single time to do well, and Nintendo certainly knows this.
Miyamoto's statement on F-Zero and DICE's stance on Battlefield Bad Company 2 might be some of the biggest blunders in understanding your market in the video game industry.
What baffles me as well is that Miyamoto barely had much involvement with F-Zero to begin with. It's not his idea, or his creation. He played a fairly minor role in its creation. So the fact that he's preventing others from making a successor to GX is baffling to me.
For real, we don't need a new hit-or-miss gimmick for every new game, that's supposed to "take the gaming world by storm" or anything like that. Sometimes, people just want a fun, competent, or familiar video game...
I wouldn't add star fox among those. Mixed as Zero's reception is, it's still a fairly recent thing, plus they officially released the previously cancelled star fox 2 not long ago either. Kid Icarus though seems especially cruel. You have a whole huge revival after like 30 years that's universally beloved and I imagine decently successful yet just... Leave it after that. Though I guess it's moreso just the bad luck of sharing your main producer with smash bros and we all which project Nintendo would rather have him prioritize
@@Eichro it's still more going for it than all those other series atm lol. There was also 643D too i forgot to mention. Though given Miyamotos the guy in charge of where star fox goes it seems, yeah he probably won't do much next if he still has his "innovate the gameplay or don't bother" mentality. Ignoring that from what I've seen Zero is just a prettier 64 with motion controls. It'd make more sense to build off the set up Assault seemed to have going
Im one of those few selected, got all the cups, on all the difficulties with all the machines, but while I felt realized and satisfied, the sheer frustration it made me endure left me with no incentive to do it again, so I just retired altogether, after that, whenever I find myself playing it again I do it on normal difficulty at best, so I could better appreciate other aspects like the visuals or music. Im one of those that feel that a sequel is not that necessary just because the last entry was almost a Magnus Opus, so at least the franchise died while it was on its Climax (no pun intended). that being said, I temporally returned to the racetrack when the FAST series debuted, and I can certainly consider it a worthy spiritual successor.
What I want with a new F-Zero is 30 Player Online Multiplayer & all tracks from SNES to GBA to Gamecube to return. Give it the same love Mario Kart got. Also, Pro F-Zero GP where there's no extra lives & retry; You crash & retire--Next Track w/ no points earned...and maybe Esport Tournaments? Finally; NO FORCED GIMMICK CONTROLS. I love Starfox Zero & the controls clicked with me but I'm minority--option select of classic or new stuff. If you wanna make motion controls for F-Zero; go for it long as I can still play like I always have since SNES/N64.
I think a lot of people would like to see that, myself included; it's basically the SSBU of F-Zero. But, Nintendo's Online Service has a lot to be desired. They should probably fix that first.
After Star Fox Zero, Miyamoto's "new control schemes being the only way forward for dormant IP" argument holds about as much water as a leaky bucket. Weird as it sounds, I'd much prefer it if the financial prospects of F-Zero were the main thing holding it back than one stubborn creative being its gatekeeper. I think some manner of battle royale multiplayer would be a good fit for the series' cutthroat, 30+ racer action.
Hell all we really need is GX with online, there's plenty of characters, plenty of tracks, it plays well, it has a story, you can make custom machines, online multiplayer is really all we need
On the one hand - a sort of racer battle royale would work wonders with the F-Zero formula, and I'd personally utterly adore it. On the other hand... I feel like PowerPoint presentations would have a higher frame rate than a reasonably modern F-Zero game using NSO
Miyamoto says that it needs "innovation" and many disagree, including myself. However, F-zero does need something. It needs completion, a zenith to reach. GX came close, but not quite. GX does not have an X-cup, F-Zero X did. GX did not have a custom track maker and editor, X did. Neither supported online play, and X in my opinion had a much better aesthetic, art, and music direction, a "heavy metal" magazine vibe rather than GX's generic techno vibe (and dont get me wrong, I like techno, but F-Zero is best as a well done "heavy metal 2000" vibe). F-Zero X also had the "death race" (basically battle) mode, and GX did not. GX had the story mode, missions, and far superior graphical quality. GX also had custom machines, which X did not. Lastly, the biggest "innovation" that could be done for F-zero would be Virtual Reality visor compatibility for a genuine first person in the machine perspective. A shift in perspective like this can go a long way to a radically different gameplay experience. F-Zero needs to be completed, not innovated. Its like a David statue, 95% completed, all the pieces are there to reach perfection. So close, yet so far.
@@Next-xm2dh Okay, but what's the story? What's the conflict(s)? What are the plot points? What is the premise? The F-Zero story was already a bit basic, unfortunately... Although I think GX made an excellent attempt with such limited material! Maybe a prequel where we see Captain Falcon become who he is, or a series of prequels...
@@pronounjow Or a story couldn't matter much, GX was the only real attempt at one to my knowledge and even that was mostly nonsensical. They can do whatever they want
@@MagillanicaLouM Right, but they haven't been able to figure out what they want with a new F-Zero, which is an even more strange position nowadays. We the players know what we want (HD, online, track editor (even better with the touchscreen on Switch like Mario Maker 2), and now the ability to play the same game on the go on Switch), but that won't get Nintendo to green-light a new F-Zero if they keep looking back at the 2003-2004 period as the last sales reference. That's also extremely strange considering how long ago that time period was and how the gaming landscape has changed so much since then.
Eeeey man, this was great. As much as I love Captain Falcon as a character, I haven't gotten around to playing these games yet. You've certainly put me in the mood to do so, very soon.
Solid A+, Cabrera would be proud. Was fun helping you film and record my dude, HMU anytime you need more recorded! Really makes me wanna get into the series, but like the title says.. it's left behind, gone, reduced to atoms, much like Nintendo's integrity.
I was always interested in F-Zero, played a bit of the original SNES one and a tiny bit of GX and holy shit, even just watching the N64 F-Zero X part of this video made me realise how badly I really need to play these for real. Love that lightning fast speed, and have always adored the music, especially the remixes in MK8 because that jazz/rock fusion is godlike.
Having recently gotten into F-Zero this past week, playing both the original for SNES and X for N64, this video was EXACTLY what I needed right now. I cannot thank you enough for bringing attention to a series as great yet forgotten as this one ;w;
43:18 shot me all the way back to my childhood watching shitty early 2000s AMVs and YTPs. I vividly remember this as something that was somewhat of an early meme on UA-cam.
Thank you for covering this fantastic series. I love my Assetto Corsa, iRacing, and Gran Turismo, but I still maintain that F-Zero GX is one of the greatest racing games ever made. It's up there in my mind with NFS Most Wanted as one of best experiences to have for fun racing.
I feel a connection with this video since i watched it when I had diarrhea on my father's house on bed. Pretty awful time all things considered, but it kinda gave me a connection to a UA-cam video i never had before or since. So, thank you ig?
1. Instead of recharge ground, have it recharge orbs/barriers. This allows getting the same charge no matter what speed you go through the recharge zone. 2. Instead of instant death after shield depleted/falling off course, have a Latichu type mechanic pull you to the center of the road but takes a long ass time. This ensures no one is totally out of the fight making everyone you've knocked out a threat possible later in the race. 3. Make courses slightly longer and/or make it more laps. All the actual professional races in the real word are built off of endurance as well as who is the fastest. This helps point 2 giving the knocked back players a chance to come back for revenge. 4. Make courses travel to different places like how they do it in the Outrun series. You're telling me for how fast these machines are going they never travel beyond the zone's limits? 5. Add assist "items". Notice I didn't say "weapons" since this isn't a Mario Kart type series. Like auto pilot for X seconds. Or an ability to freeze time so only you can go for X seconds while everyone is frozen for that time. These types of items don't punish good players but it helps the people in the back. Also for "expert play" simply turn these items off. 6. Force pit stops like they do in some professional racers. Like lose the ability to grip the road for example. Also for example going too fast and too often could tear up your machine forcing you to pitstop. 7. Make attacking consume even a small amount of energy. Now this becomes a gambling situation. Do you really want to attack and miss and now you have less energy? 8. Make a perfect timed block on attackers. Like the parry system from 3rd Strike. Gain some energy from a perfect block and retaliate if you wish. If you wish because your attack could also be perfect timed blocked back. In addition, mis-timing the block makes you lose energy forcing people to stop spamming attempting to block. 9. In addition to 8 this one is debatable: Make boost and health/shield two separate bars? The person in the front doesn't have to attack meanwhile everyone behind has to juggle between attacking/blocking/boosting if it's still just one bar. 10. In addition to 8: Make the spin attack also perfect time blockable and make the spinner completely stop and machine disabled for X seconds. This puts a gamble situation do you really want to spin attack. Flip side successful spin attacks gives much health/shield back. 11. Add "boost zones" like a warp speed section. Taking someone out here puts the person in grave deficit since the person taken out now had to start at the back of the boost zone. 12. Evolving stages. Say lap 2 a comet destroys a section of the course now that part of the stage is no longer usable. If a person who's being lapped just so happens to be in that comet's path? Too bad, you're too slow, you're being lapped anyway. 13. Choice evolving stages. Whoever is in the lead from lap 1 the start of lap 2 gets to choose what events happen to change the course. 14. Like how Mario Kart does it now why not have stages with no laps, just a straight shot to the finish. This is kind of point 4. 15. More racers at once, increase the number to 50 or even 100. 16. Mario Kart and GTA5 actually already did this but imagine a futuristic version: machine goes from ground vehicle to underwater vehicle to aircraft mid race for certain parts of the track. 17. Have checkpoints. This is really just to help stop glitching the game for some "speedrunners" and this is just a personal point for me. It's not impressive to me when I see your machine just flying around the air off the track and magically you're already on lap 2. By putting checkpoints all throughout the laps this helps stop this exploit. I fucking love GX and badly want a new F-Zero.
I know it's a bit frustrating, but not many IPs can say they died on a good note as F-Zero did. And F-Zero does (sorta) live on through Mario Kart. Way way better of a fate than being dragged through the mud and carried solely by meme power or being strapped to a generator, drained dry of all of its resources, but continues on because it continues to put out big numbers-or just completely forgotten to the passage of time.
I’m more glad that you watched the anime lol because I feel like the only person who has. This is a great video man, I hope someday we get a remake of this game!
This was a great video. But the ending was a bit conflicting to me. While I can appreciate the sentiment that F-Zero ending without the company churning.out a new entry every year, I still can’t say I really think X or GX are feeling like the pinnacle that they once were. Sure, there might be a lot of passion. But a lot of the new content in GX feels pretty half-baked. But then again, so does X. F-Zero even today has its flaws rolled up on it’s sleeve, but I still highly enjoy it because it offers an expierence no other series can offer, not even the indie developers that attempt to say they’re inspired by this series. I hope it comes back, and fixes issues I’ve had with the series. But I won’t hold my breath for the next 15 years. Edit: To me, my biggest wishes for the series is to actually make multiplayer more than just 4 racers. It always feels so small racing in a track made for 30 racers. More modes is better. Bring back death race. Bring back Track editor. And give us a career mode for Deathborn’s sake, I always wanted that in F-Zero. Balance out the racers way better than in X or GX. Give us more music options besides just Mute City/Big Blue SNES. Maybe add in flying sections like they were going to in Zero Racers. Or go back to Super Cars. Just a taste of any of the concepts they can expand upon. Also characters and story certainly do need to be improved from GX and GP Legend. I can think of quite a lot of newer ideas and older ideas they can try again. But I don’t think Nintendo cares.
Excellent video! I'm still hoping Nintendo will one day hand over the F-Zero license to the devs of the Fast Racing Neo games, those are basicly F-Zero names without the name attached to them (and I believe it even has the same announcer voice as the one from GX/AX)!
F-Zero is my favourite racing series ever so it's a shame that it's been absent for so long. I don't think a sequel needs to reinvent the wheel every time so it's a shame that Miyamoto has that mentality. I don't think he contributing much to the series besides maybe producer or supervisor but I believe he has a lot of involvement in many of Nintendo's decisions. I would just love a new F-Zero game like GX on modern systems with online. I'm impressed with your F-Zero skills. The only characters I beat Grand Prix on the highest difficulty was Bio Rex & Falcon.
There was no other series like it. Pulse pounding music, adrenalin rush racing, blazing through tight corners and spirals, hitting mind blowing speed and ripping through tracks, all the variety of characters that had their own themes, the distinctive locations and course variety... I wish Nintendo would bring it back. It won't have the same spirit or soul. GX was the last of the great games and the peak of the series. I had the pleasure and frustration of mastering the game and loved the challenge. Beating the game was so rewarding. I miss that era of Nintendo...
From someone who's never played an fzero game. It looks super fun to master. And I think I know how the game could evolve in general, it's an overused concept but I think it might fit for it Fzero 99, turn it into a battle royale game now that the tech is there and you can fill the lobbies for it
Never listened to the GX OST, but it's uncanny how similar your samples were to the original Sonic Riders soundtrack, especially Babylon gsrden and Babylon Guardian. I unironocally love the sonic riders soundtrack. Interesting to see that you mentioned shadow in this video as carry-over assets.
Fast RMX is an amazingfuturistic speed racer that looks incredible and runs like a dream. It scratched the F-Zero itch for me. (Still want a new F-Zero though) . Also it’s made by just five guys.
Great video! While I do worry that a new entry could only be inferior to GX, I would trust those AV veterans to get it right if Nintendo would let them. I really don't want much, just some graphics on the level of Mario Kart 8, new cups, a new story, online mulitplayer and maybe bring back the track editor for longevity. Definitely don't need forced gimmicks like Star Fox Zero haha
I didn't play all F-Zero games, but I spent a fair share of my N64 time in F-Zero X. In fact, I just recently finished GX's Story Mode after seeing so much about it the past 20 years. What I do know is, Captain Falcon will always prevail. Racing his way to our hearts. We love F-Zero, even if there won't be any new games.
Nagoshi's been working on the yakuza series for the past 15 years and when you think about it a polished and improved GX like racing experience with some Yakuza like overworld missions where you can do crazy cinematic falcon punches and falcon kicks on enemies would be rad as hell. For fucks sake, Falcon's main occupation is of a bounty hunter. Just give us some of those bounty hunts with Yakuza gameplay.
This feels refreshing. Feels nice to see a positive retrospective from you after all this time after the double whammy that was the Sonic and Smash videos. F-Zero is a series I enjoy whenever I get the opportunity to play it. It's definitely hard though and requires patience to understand. X also has one of my favorite soundtracks ever in a Nintendo game but GX is still pretty good, though I admittedly prefer Hidenori Shoji's other work (see below). Also curious if you'd be interested in trying Nagoshi's other golden goose, the Yakuza series, since while a different experience entirely, you can see a lot of design philosophies that reflect on not only his past work but Sega as a company.
F-Zero I feel isn't really the type of series that needs to innovate all that much considering I would still say there aren't ANY games on the market since they stopped that replicates its gameplay (alot of the indie futuristic racers are more Wipeout in design rather than F-Zero with only one off hand I can think of that actually did try to be F-Zero) and like you mentioned, small mechanical changes, improvements to what's already there and new track ideas would already be good enough places to start with a sequel. I also just think if Nintendo isn't intent on making a new game, they could at least make the games themselves more widely accessible since your best bet for F-Zero X is through the old eshop channels (one of which is already shutdown and I can only forsee the Wii U's closing soon too) or emulation and F-Zero GX just straight up hasn't even had another release so unless you still own a backwards compatible Wii or a Gamecube, you can't even play those. The franchise in general is just really in a tough spot right now and I feel like Nintendo's only gonna shoot it in the foot going forward instead of trying to bring it back in some fashion and in the right light.
Nintendo releases formulaic Pokémon games every other year with core gameplay that hasn't changed since the first game yet they won't make a new F Zero that only polishes core elements from previous games. Shit, I can't even find a copy of GX for under $80 and at this point I would take a zero effort switch port. If they put out a modern F Zero with current hardware & a soundtrack influenced by recent music, I'd lose it. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get Splatoon's music writers on board
This is a beautiful love letter to one of the best series of all time, a series that was pushed to the absolute limit everytime, these games were my childhood, even though I wasn't that good at it. I love this world, I wish it got like an anime movie, in the style of the movie Redline would be amazing. Nice review Ps. I found this video searching for the soundtrack :p Edit: y'know what, earned sub, I've watched your sonic vids too Double edit: I believe mine boosting was 100% intentional, and adds another layer to how wild the f zero world is
I would love to see more of the world and interactions between the characters. There's so much that was implied to exist from the racer profiles, aliens that came from war-torn planets to race for their people, deranged war veterans, hair-brained biological experiments, cyborgs, psychopaths, undead returning from centuries past to race again, or just dudes trying to raise money for their orphanage. It's all wacky and silly, and each character has such a unique flavor that they feel like protagonists in their own anime. Seeing such a diverse and eclectic setting built upon, with a narrative embrace for the wildness of the characters that inhabit it, would be a fantastic starting point for a sequel. They have a very rich world that they've built, and it would be a shame for that to be unexplored.
It really is frustrating at times to often think back on where F-Zero (and gaming to an extent) *should* be at this point in time. All F-Zero gets really is cameos, instead of a proper entry or some way for the current audience to access the games instead of porting the SNES game over and over again. A few antigrav games can kind of placate F-Zero fans, such as Aero GPX and Super Pilot. But neither have the universe F-Zero fans are familiar with (it's a Bug Fables/Paper Mario type of situation). Still there's worse fates. We've had to rely on emulation and rom scenes for years. And thank goodness for mods in other games that try to include F-Zero as well such as Trackmania United for example, and even that one Sonic Mania mod. That even stretches to games that allow character, vehicle, or track creation. They would be some way to at least keep F-Zero alive and featured through other current games. I suppose one takeaway is that at least there's folks still doing F-Zero related things. It could always be worse.
Great video, thank you for shining a light on such an under-represented and forgotten series! I've adored these games for decades, from the speed and thrill to the look and feel of everything. I've almost unlocked all the AX racers, and am close to getting to the tracks too- though Story Mode 9 still eludes me. One of these days I wish to find an AX machine.
Don't mind me, just a 2 month late comment dropping here... Tbh, I've always been fascinated with the world of F-Zero just thanks to its music in Smash and obviously the walking badass meme that is the Captain of Falcons. Though I'd be lying if I didn't admit that my look into the series was a bit... rough. F-Zero X through Wii VC was my first game, and playing it with my brothers was bizarre to me. As kids that basically grew up on Mario Kart, this game was a shock to us lol. And while I've since given the series more chances by revisiting other games, it still never clicked with me personally. I like the wacky premise, the futuristic aesthetic, the world, and all... but I've always felt like F-Zero would be better if slightly taken in some new direction. That's... obviously not ideal to F-Zero fans of course, and trust me, I understand the pain of a series transforming into something very different. But I feel like for the characters it has and the world it has, it has some potential outside of racing alone. But that's just me. Great video!
Bangin' tunes across the series! Had a high school friend that used to use some card thing to play AX arcades and transfer bonuses over to the GC version; he was obsessed.
I am surprised some indie studio didn't make a F-zero clone to exploit the void left behind. ...Well. technically, they did. But none of the clones went into the cartoony ridiculous characters and the voluntary hyper-corny story that we can see most in the later titles and the anime. So, in the end, those indie future racers ended up feeling more like WipeOut in terms of visual identity, even if some had a game-play that was actually relatively close to F-zero. ...I wonder if a smaller project/team will ever decide, one day, to emulate everything that made F-zero F-zero. Including the dumb shit of that legendary story mode. The world needs more of that pure, raw, "so bad it's good" cheese XD
Fantastic retrospective, Jeb. I've waited 11 months for this. It was worth the wait! Looking forward to the next upload, because while you may not upload regularly, the audience is always in for a treat on the occasions you do upload.
I gave up on Nintendo recently because they just don't speak to me anymore. Would it hurt that they make another F-zero or Pilotwing. Even the Wii-U Starfox game wasn't made with fans in mind but to show off the hardware. Nintendo can suck it as far as I care. Luckily Waverace 64 remains the pinnacle in it's genre. Great video and points to think about
F-Zero is my favorite racing series of all time and this video really did the series Justice.... Yea, don't have much to say here, just wanted to say that.
“What do you want that we haven’t done before” Idk, new side modes, gimmicks, better graphics, controls, and customization. It’s not much, but it’s all Mario kart has been doing ever since the ds, and that series is doing better than smash bros. (Much to my confusion) funnily enough that series was only made because they didn’t have the tech to make a multiplayer FZero game.
New F Zero after the charm and everything extra and charming in GX is so good. Games with heart and be both thrilling and still know when to chuckle and enjoy itself from soundtrack to goofy scenes and premise.
As far as new idea go, the only idea I had, was the ability to levitate, that is elevate your ride a few feet off the ground, you'd have analogue conrtol over it, so you could choose exactly how much you hover. While hovering your steering is usually worse, since your farther from the road, but if you drift turn while elevated your vehicle would turn on it's side, allowing for super precise turning, but at the risk that if you loose control while turning this way, return to the ground without righting your vehicle properly, you could be at severe risk of crashing. More risk, for more control. Heavier vehicles might be able to jump over the top of others, and drop down on them for massive damage, while lighter ones, might just be able to pass over them, at the risk of landing on them and taking damage themselves. bumpier roads like the one seen in this video on Fire Field could be navigated by alternating your levitation to match the dips in the road, resulting in a smooth ride. And it would probably lead to crazy track jumps and short cuts. Adding HD rumble support to have the feel of the engine in your controller could be neat too, but that's obviously more a gimmick than a mechanic. though it could maybe assist in Motion control accuracy if that were an option.
This was a great video, maybe one day (copium) we'll get some awesome race car driver by day, bounty hunter by night F-Zero game, but reminiscing will have to do in the meantime.
Strange, some people argue Deathborn had the best actor. Although this line isn't helping. But at the same time it's my favorite line next to. "Falcon! You've come to die."
I have to give a little credit to Fast RMX on the Switch. It, like F-Zero was a release title for the newest Nintendo console, has great music and the controls on the game are good. It's got a lot of F-Zero in it, I just wish it WAS F-Zero....
I have a hard time seeing a new F-Zero as anything more than an HD GX, but that's just a result of it being part of the Racing genre. The Adventure genre can do all kinds of different things. Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild for example feel and play completely differently, but they're still undeniably Adventure games. The Racing genre feels a lot more restrictive to me. I'm not saying that they should never make a new F-Zero, but I think finding that balance between satisfying the current fanbase as well as doing something new and interesting would be incredibly difficult.
@JebTube Great video and actually in thought feelings. I think the hardest part of trying to make F-Zero relevant can be the same issue with Star Fox. It boils down to one question that I would like your thoughts on. What does the world of the franchise mean to the creator? It can be easy to look at F-Zero and Star Fox currently as it represents just racing and space travel. But what is beyond that? The ground work for it is the hardest part no one talks about. Like no joke, trying to make a universe for F-ZERO will be a hard task and an unspoken reason why there hasn’t been a new game. You can’t just making a game without context, Balan kinda shows that without enough of it, there would be questions raised. I think the proper way to reinstate F-Zero into the Nintendo brand is to construct a game...that constructs a universe...a cohesive one. F-Zero needs a groundwork title that establish what it’s about. What goes into it? Who is Captain Falcon and crew? Why does he like to race with others? Why is he a Bounty Hunter? Does he now Samus as well? All these questions need to be addressed when creating a universe for these franchises. No so much real world aspects, the franchise’s own unique style of real world, that’s the hardest step. Same can be same for Star Fox, it’s the reason we haven’t seen another one. There’s no groundwork and the closest we got was Adventures which bombed. In order for these to get mainstreamed again, they each need a game that boldly shows the universe they live in. Creativity for that task is damning, but it’s not impossible. Nintendo just needs the right people with creativity and the right people for programming the games. The Switch could be the break the dormant pasts need to get back and running.
I have an idea: F zero NX Campaign is extremely linear story driven with a focus on racing and segments of Arkham-style beat em up sections where you collect bounties. There can be a score attack more to see how long you can last and how long of a combo chain you can maintain But the main mode and multiplayer mode remains as the racing experience. They can bring track creator mode that was from the DD
Heck yeah, shotgun kiss is one of my favorites. I was glad they put in in smash. Also I agree with the sentiment. I also don't know what else I'd like in f zero except for bringing them up possibly to newer systems with some new features. They put a lot of passion into gx and it shows. That's what makes it more memorable for me. And that's why I feel a lot of people want it back. Sad to think though that it haz to possibly die because of it already reaching it's peak. That and the disappointment in sales and what not but yeah. Enjoyed the video! Have a nice day everyone.
Excellent video! I've been subscribed for a long while but somehow never saw this video before. I wish Nintendo would give F-Zero one more real chance on a popular console like the Switch.
Fast RMX is great check that out. Super fast. Maybe even faster than F-Zero
@@magicjohnson3121 Fast RMX is solid but it's closer in feel to Wipeout instead of F-Zero. The handling in general is more floaty in Fast RMX. Not bad but it doesn't scratch the same itch.
There is hero mode which is basically f-Zero mode 😉
I hate that other futuristic racers have been neglected. Wipeout doesn't get new iterations often, the Extreme-G series is dead, and other games like Kinetica never got sequels.
Shout outs to Wipeout and Episode 1 Racer
Someone recently posted an 'F-Zero 99' idea on the F-Zero subreddit.
Basicly the SNES F-Zero online with 98 other racers. After each lap only the the top X racers can continue. (Just like in the original game, only now going until 1 person is left). So a 99-game for Switch online, but with F-Zero.
To me that sounds like a perfect way to reintroduce F-Zero. Anyone interested should look it up on the F-Zero subreddit.
This sounds just like the Bomberman game for the Switch.
That will never happen. LMAO!!!
Well looks like that Reddit poster was a time traveler from September 14th 2023 because he basically described the new F-Zero 99 to a T

BRO DO I GOT GOOD NEWS FOR YOU!!!!!
Why not make a F-Zero GX remaster on the Switch? Why? WHYYY??
@@LostSoulSilver Cause I can already see Nintendo charging $60 for it.
@@inendlesspain4724 A small price to pay for the salvation of F-Zero
Realistically f zero likely would have to innovate to even be successful considering f zero never sold super well so of they just make or rereleases an f-zero title really similar to old ones it is likely to fail
Nagoshi should've made the Kart racer mini game in Yakuza 7/Like a Dragon an F Zero successor instead.

Top 10 cruelest lies in gaming
Saddest anime ending.
Well, we did get GX after the end of X (1998) so it wasn't technically a lie. It definitely still hurts though...
Pain
We did see F-Zero a couple of more times to be fair. It's not like it vanished after F-Zero X.
Ah, who am I kidding?
@@TheDr502fzero 99 fills the void for me. Not for everyone but for me
Miyamoto's statement regarding the "oh, we must innovate at ALL COSTS" is a pretty frustrating statement primarily because this entire notion isn't shared with half the games Nintendo farts out.
Let's aslo not forget the ironically named "New Super Mario Bros" series which has yet to meanfully change with its four games.
For real, we don't need a new hit-or-miss gimmick for every new game, that's supposed to "take the gaming world by storm" or anything like that. Sometimes, people just want a fun, competent, or familiar video game...
Well Miyamoto has nothing to do with Kirby and Mario is a much better seller
Press F for F-Zero, Advanced Wars, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, Golden Sun and Sin & Punishment.
@@MagillanicaLouM Star Fox was in life support before Zero. After Zero's fiasco, it's as good as dead.
Damn your comment pisses me off. Because it's so true! 😭
Don't forget Punch-Out!!.
Nothing makes a person feel more powerful than having won all the F-Zero GX grand prix cups in all difficulties
Especially when you unlock all the character movies.

Captain Falcon, F-Zero X.
If they could do that and make it as fun and twitchy as GX, then I think Nintendo would have a best seller.
Well, now you have F-Zero 99. It ain't much, but uh, _Online_ I guess?
After Star Fox Zero, Miyamoto's "new control schemes being the only way forward for dormant IP" argument holds about as much water as a leaky bucket. Weird as it sounds, I'd much prefer it if the financial prospects of F-Zero were the main thing holding it back than one stubborn creative being its gatekeeper. I think some manner of battle royale multiplayer would be a good fit for the series' cutthroat, 30+ racer action.
Nice idea. I preferred the X physics of ramming cars over GX feel.
I would totally play F-Zero 99
I doubt it’s just Miyamoto stopping it
Hell all we really need is GX with online, there's plenty of characters, plenty of tracks, it plays well, it has a story, you can make custom machines, online multiplayer is really all we need
On the one hand - a sort of racer battle royale would work wonders with the F-Zero formula, and I'd personally utterly adore it.
On the other hand... I feel like PowerPoint presentations would have a higher frame rate than a reasonably modern F-Zero game using NSO
Miyamoto: What do you want from F-Zero that we had never done before?
Me: A 30 player intense racing game with *good* online multiplayer
Captain Falcon is too cool not to have one last ultimate flashy high speed adventure
When the last major game involves the main character defeating the creators themselves I imagine it's hard to think of a sequel.
Pokemon Gen IV had Arceus. Game Freak still went further, regardless of game quality...
Reboot the series or put someone else as captain falcon

I'm actually shocked more people aren't trying to make F-Zero based creations in WWE games.
@@custom-r Yeah that is surprising.
31:07 everything about this scene is perfect
50:41 You actually did it man! The way you combined X and GX in that ending... that actually pulled a tear out of me. That was fantastic!
Having recently gotten into F-Zero this past week, playing both the original for SNES and X for N64, this video was EXACTLY what I needed right now. I cannot thank you enough for bringing attention to a series as great yet forgotten as this one ;w;
Dont forget burnout
I have so many fond memories of throwing my controller at that GX story mode. Thanks for covering this franchise, Jeb!
Every year since like 06 I've been waiting for a new F-Zero announcement and every year I die a little more on the inside.
I feel a connection with this video since i watched it when I had diarrhea on my father's house on bed. Pretty awful time all things considered, but it kinda gave me a connection to a UA-cam video i never had before or since. So, thank you ig?
For that matter I'm fine now
I still play F-Zero GX pretty much whenever I get the chance. I love this series.
All of the cg from gx feels like Playing the movie foodfight
I know it's a bit frustrating, but not many IPs can say they died on a good note as F-Zero did. And F-Zero does (sorta) live on through Mario Kart.
Way way better of a fate than being dragged through the mud and carried solely by meme power or being strapped to a generator, drained dry of all of its resources, but continues on because it continues to put out big numbers-or just completely forgotten to the passage of time.

I’m more glad that you watched the anime lol because I feel like the only person who has. This is a great video man, I hope someday we get a remake of this game!
A love letter to a more or less long forgotten series if I've ever seen one. The wait was certainly worth it.
I hope that Nintendo ports the F-Zero X and GX to show that they acknowledge F-Zero. Plus those games are hard to come by.
Excellent video! I'm still hoping Nintendo will one day hand over the F-Zero license to the devs of the Fast Racing Neo games, those are basicly F-Zero names without the name attached to them (and I believe it even has the same announcer voice as the one from GX/AX)!
Happy one year anniversary to fzero 99. The BEST 99 game
This is the best video on F-Zero
From someone who's never played an fzero game. It looks super fun to master. And I think I know how the game could evolve in general, it's an overused concept but I think it might fit for it
Fzero 99, turn it into a battle royale game now that the tech is there and you can fill the lobbies for it
Never listened to the GX OST, but it's uncanny how similar your samples were to the original Sonic Riders soundtrack, especially Babylon gsrden and Babylon Guardian.
I unironocally love the sonic riders soundtrack. Interesting to see that you mentioned shadow in this video as carry-over assets.
GX is my personal favourite but I won't deny that the opening cord of X is the most iconic thing in the whole franchise
Fast RMX is an amazingfuturistic speed racer that looks incredible and runs like a dream. It scratched the F-Zero itch for me. (Still want a new F-Zero though) . Also it’s made by just five guys.
You may defineitly want to check out Aero GPX and Super Pilot next. They pretty much advance what F-Zero set forth.
Late 80’s and early 90’s kids grew up with F-Zero, I’m surprised they haven’t made a new game since F Zero GX in 03
That ending kicked me in the emotional nuts.
No lie, F-Zero GX is one of my favorite racing games of all time. It's _criminal_ we haven't gotten another one (in America) since then.
Guess whose back? Back again? Jeb is back. Tell your friends.
BROOOO F-Zero beeing made by Sega makes SOOOOO much sense, cuz I was looking at it and was thinking this kinda gives me Sonic Riders vibes
Yeah, one day I think I would like to. I hear it's quite legendary.
LMAO I love the Drake and Josh reference! I finally have context for that scene over 10 years later!
It’s always amazing to see people talk about f-zero!
I wonder what would be more surprising: a new F-Zero announcement, or a Sonic Adventure 3 announcement.
Wario Land 5
What would be surprising is a Jet Set Radio 3
Or TTYD remake
Wild Arms 6.
2:15 was that a freaking AVENUE Q REFERENCE?!?!
That blooper scene with Black Shadow dancing to shake off a fall will never NOT be funny to me lol
Great video. I get the feeling I'll be re-listening to it often.

It got me thinking about the xgra racing games at the end of the video.
I guess I can't be too bummed about these games dying 😔
The GP Legend and Climax games are well worthy of a deep dive. They’re excellent entries in an underappreciated series.
My favorite UA-cam video. Thanks for making this, it was a great 51 minutes of my life :)
F-zero: Mach 2
That is the next title releasing late 2025 for Switch 2 as a launch title. Just as F-Zero was for the SNES in 1990
Fantastic retrospective, Jeb. I've waited 11 months for this. It was worth the wait! Looking forward to the next upload, because while you may not upload regularly, the audience is always in for a treat on the occasions you do upload.
It's pretty cool how connected f-zero is to Sega through GX. Never knew
Been playin the series since 91. SMW and FZero were the newest games to play and life was good.
Really nice to see you back man! You're one of the most honest yet coolest of content creators on here!
38:52, yo, maybe I'm imagining it, but those tracks sound so Yakuza to me that it makes it obvious who worked on GX.
"Hey all you people" is probably one of the best openings to a video I have ever heard :D
This was a great video, maybe one day (copium) we'll get some awesome race car driver by day, bounty hunter by night F-Zero game, but reminiscing will have to do in the meantime.
31:04 it is not bad voice acting! It's genius, it makes always smile since release :D Alone this scene motivates me to win this race
Strange, some people argue Deathborn had the best actor. Although this line isn't helping. But at the same time it's my favorite line next to. "Falcon! You've come to die."
Ah finally, the Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed retrospective/review.
I have to give a little credit to Fast RMX on the Switch. It, like F-Zero was a release title for the newest Nintendo console, has great music and the controls on the game are good. It's got a lot of F-Zero in it, I just wish it WAS F-Zero....
i love it when people talk about fzero
I have an idea:
F zero NX
Campaign is extremely linear story driven with a focus on racing and segments of Arkham-style beat em up sections where you collect bounties.
There can be a score attack more to see how long you can last and how long of a combo chain you can maintain
But the main mode and multiplayer mode remains as the racing experience.
Climb up and get the last chance! My favorite soundtrack from the game! ohhh god f-zero has a big part on my heart.
Excellent video! I've been subscribed for a long while but somehow never saw this video before. I wish Nintendo would give F-Zero one more real chance on a popular console like the Switch.
