  • Coastal Command is a documentary style account of the Shorts Sunderland and PBY Catalina flying boats during the Battle of the Atlantic. The film includes real footage of attacks on a major enemy ship by Hudson and Halifax bombers based in Iceland. Later, the film depicts a routine sea patrol, in which a Sunderland flying boat flies over a convoy and bombs a German U-boat. Two versions of the film were made, one featuring an explanatory voice over. In this version, the film ends with the Sunderland crew returns home after the successful attack on the cruiser, and the wounded crew member is hospitalized. After a visit to the hospital, the film ends as the Sunderland crew is informed they will be re-deployed to West Africa, to begin a new mission.

My Uncle flew these in RAAF 10 squadron, for three tours of duty during the war.

At 16:50 a gorgeous shot of the Sunderland coming in for a perfect landing. Watching it sink to meet it's reflection. There's been some splendid camera work on this bit of propaganda for home consumption.
    Sending audiences home feeling safe.

I noticed at 10:52 steam coming off the tea, didn't miss a trick in those days. Poor old cameraman must have been sitting on the nose, I wonder if he got one.

You only needed two qualifications to be a pilot in the RAF: Be a snappy dresser and an all round good egg ☺️ I love these old information films, even if the 1940's style was stilted and wooden.

Shocking bad form old boy to speak normal English. In the early days of the RAF, you couldn't be an officer unless you had been to a public school and had an accent that sounded like you were trying to swallow a whole plum! But still the Short Sunderland was the finest flying boat ever built.

"Something the matter with my banter Squadron Leader"? It is a bit thick, but I bet they were easier to understand on the radio. Imagine the fellows with the thick Cockney accents!

During the Battle of Britain most pilots were Flight Sargent's from Grammar or Technical Schools. Th Public School myth was reinforced by the film The First of the Few and the most successful Squadron of the Battle was 303 which was a Polish Squadron

Well, one day some kid will say our style of speaking is awfully affectated by our times, and they'll be right. One thing I know is that they, and American flyers too, were taught to speak very calmly even when being attacked. These kids were facing death day, so let them have their snobbish or whatever affectation.

If you think that accent is bad, you should watch DVD "Target for Tonight", I'm sure they forced themselves to speak like this when they were on film, it's just not natural.
