Don't get ripped off! || 5 TIPS FOR MOVING CROSS COUNTRY
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 сер 2024
- Over the last 7 years, I've moved cross-country 5 times, and I'm about to do it again. Moving cross-country may just be the best decision you ever make! Enjoy the 5 tips I'm offering for moving, especially if you're unsure if moving is right for you, or if you're on a budget.
I’m moving back to California, my home state, after a couple of years in another state… it’s easy, convenient, and paradise… and I actually found people were more engaging and down to earth in California. We have a casual cool vibe about us.
Same!
Yeah this video is great, but CA literally has it all. Beaches, mountains, forests, deserts, amusement parks, etc. Plus the amazing weather. I’ve lived all over and will continue to do so for work, but nothing beats California!
I'm moving OUT of Cali, where I was born and raised. Liberal soy boy politics, self absorbed narcissistic people, mask wearing, non critical thinkers - DONE! Pretty scenery is NO comparison to that nonsense!!
Same for me I moved to Virginia from California but have decided to move back to Cali since ALL my family is there and while I loved VA I really miss my family.
I've never even heard of Penske before. You literally saved me $600 on my move for that tip!
Thank you for posting this video.
PACK RATS POD, 8x8 POD @ 1200 miles was only appx $2500. Bonus? Got TWO weeks to pack it myself (senior slow speed lol) + one week transport was required + one week to unpack. Clean box. Great follow through + price matching + discounts for the asking (ie aarp, student, military, Costco, Sam's, AAA, ask away, they'll find something). PS Use plastic bins, heavy duty garbage bags, strap stuff in half way, wrap and wedge things well. Airtag it. All great peace of mind.
I’m moving from California to Alabama & it’s costing me about $8k using a 16’ pod & driving myself in my car!
Gas prices don’t help!
Unfortunately rentals in ca are hard to come by (as so many are leaving!) & I have a big old dog to transport who probably won’t fit in the cab of a truck with my son & I. Ugg.
Thanks for the AAA discount suggestions & free supplies ideas. Gonna check both of those out.
I agree with your thoughts on Ca & very excited to have a fresh start in Alabama!
Thanks for your video!!
Great tips thanks!! “FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS”, I love that!
Expensive doesn't begin to cover it!
I am moving less than 700 miles, living in a 1,100 ft. Condo (stuff in storage,as well), and the quotes from PODS and midlevel movers are around $10,000. That is 5 1/2 months of ALL my expenses...rent, insurance, car costs, car insurance, food, vet bills ...everything!
It would only take them 2 or 3 hours on each end to load/unload, and a 12 hour drive. 3 days wipes out nearly half a year. It is "all that the traffic will bear"
I feel you! It costs us $4,000 just to pay the movers to move us 600 miles. And this was a shadey moving company that cut corners so we could hire them "so cheap". It was at leat $8,000 total once we accounted for deposits, gas, fees, etc. We had to take out a loan Now we're doing it again, but trying to do it ourselves this time. And NEVER moving out of town again!!!
This is one of the better informational videos on how to move across country. Thank you so much!
Budget doesn’t charge per mile! Pretty great
So only daily rate u mean?!
Im currently trying to move from arkansas to arizona this october, and coming across your video while doing the research for it felt like a sign :) I know this video was years ago, but you still helped open my eyes to some things I need to look out for. Thank you! I hope your move went smoothly :)
This is your sign. Do it! ❤
Thank you!! Great video love your outlook! Get out there in the world! 🌎
Thank you for this. I just moved across country, and agree with all you shared.
It’s been four years since you posted this and I hope you are doing well 😊
Thanks for your great video! We are in our mid 60's and retiring....moving to another state and pretty nervous about it....but you have bolstered our courage. Thank you for the inspiration!!
The moving boxes online is such a great idea! Thank you!
as a fellow born California - I agree with you completely
That last tip is everything! I want to see more than just the midwest and west that I'm used too. USA is BIG! Cheers!
Thank you so much for your video!!! I am moving from Georgia to California for school and this video was sooooooo helpful!!! I hope that your move went well. Thanks again for all of the wonderful tips!
Very sweet. Thanks a bunch. 😊❤
I am so shocked to hear someone say Delaware 😅 Born and raised there, and now moving back from Florida.
Started in AZ with one large suitcase leaving with enough furniture and stuff for a 3 bedroom house with 2 car garage.
Moving from Pennsylvania to Arizona so this is really helpful! Thank you!
I STAY IN ARIZONA YOU GONE LOVE IT
O.m.g. Your video just gave me goosebumps because I am also fleeing from California where I have lived my whole life and I am leaving for the exact same reasons you stated. I can't stand how everybody puts it on such a pedestal and I'm moving to Alabama where I know absolutely nobody and girl I am terrified but your video just gave me so much courage I can't even explain. What I really want to know is how do you find somewhere to live from across the country
Ahh girl it's going to be okay! I love your courage! As for me, I have done it all. Typically, I havent been able to visit before I arrive for work, so to find somewhere to live, I've messaged people on Roommates.com, I have found places on Craigslist before, I have found apartments on apartments.com...anything you can think of I've probably tried it (I've moved around quite a bit). Do you have a job lined up out there? If you do, try contacting the HR department and ask for recommendations on where affordable/safe places to live are! And do a lot of research on google, if you don't get to see it before you arrive!
@@diligenthandsfinance8326 I have actually visited a few times to the area I want to move. I'm currently working on getting a job out there and I suppose next step is housing. I was looking to move into an actual house but I think an apartment is easier when you haven't seen it etc.
I’m in the same boat girl...I’m moving to VA in April and don’t have any family or friends there. It’s kinda scary but I’m excited about starting this new journey. Good luck with your move!
There's a reason for everything and moves are one of them.
If I had listened to my intuition years ago I'd be happily settled in the Verde Valley AZ instead of following my insane (literally) ex husband.
I am now planning on going back to my home state by myself no pets nothing and I can't wait.
Don't be afraid. You may meet some people that are pivotal in your journey-they help you with employment opportunities, introduce you to social groups and activities.
If you're not meant to be somewhere-thats where I'm at now-everything is a struggle and seems to go wrong no matter what you do. That means it's time to go. Like I said don't be afraid. Things will get better and good luck to you!!
Agreed! You’re not alone! I’ve heard of people going through facebook groups to find housing as well. It’s definitely different when you don’t know anyone where you are going.
Not sure what it is, but I like this video more than all the moving videos I've been watching. Thank you!
This is the kindest comment anyone has ever left! thank YOU!
Oh, no problem!
Amazing video! i live in Texas for 22 years now my whole life my dreams to move to Colorado. Seems like such a hard thing but i need it this is the year!
I hope you moved to CO & love it
Thank you for the video! Super helpful tips and came at the perfect time! I’m ready to spread my own wings
Thanks for the video, I love your energy! You are saying a lot of the same things I was thinking and arranging when it comes to my move. I decided to go with Budget and hire helpers at each location. I'm moving from Michigan to Arizona.
I’m currently planning a move from LA to NYC. This helped a lot and thanks for the words of encouragement ✨
Sorry to be off topic but does any of you know a way to get back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot the account password. I would love any help you can give me
OMG . Talk about going from the frying pan into the fire. 😎
I’m moving from NJ back to my home state of California, and unfortunately I cannot drive a big moving truck by myself for that long of a trip/distance. I don’t feel safe or comfortable doing it, so I just have to use PODS, don’t have another choice. Argh. I’ve lived in northern California, Los Angeles, Colorado, New Jersey, and NYC. After living in all these places, I know that I just really love Southern California the most, it suits me best, so I’m excited to go back! But yes it’s so important to get out of your hometown & experience other places! It’s very cool that you’ve lived all over :)
I know how intimidating it is to drive your own truck that far, don't feel bad! Also, I'm from CA too. I know how hard it is to feel settled anywhere else. This sounds a little snobby, but hey, when you grow up in paradise, nothing feels the same. :) Best of luck to you!
@@diligenthandsfinance8326 lol that’s very true! California has it’s downsides, but it really is so beautiful & amazing! Thank you for the reply ☺️
do you have a relative that will drive it..? and you fly them back home? lol
@@1snakemanvrod lol that’s not a bad idea! But unfortunately I didn’t have a relative where I was living in NJ so that wouldn’t have worked... All my relatives are back West. I completed the move a few weeks ago, so it’s all done now, I’m back in LA! Yay! 😊
@@tiffanychantelmusic I am looking at moving from CA to back east. I’ve considered PODS for the same reason you did. :) How was your experience with them? We’re things broken?? I’ve read both good and bad reviews on them.
You are so right! I am doing it next month! Moving to nature and it feels so good!
Moving from the Bay Area to Philly. Super helpful. I wasn’t considering driving but it just makes the most sense. I just have two cats so I worry about their comfortability
Vet tech here! Get them some sedatives, you can ask for gabapentin, trazadone and a couple more. Try it out at home first and see how they do. If good, give 12 hours before your move and 1-2 hours before you start driving. It will keep them calm, just keep some water and wet food nearby, to stop and offer. It helps them with their anxiety and you as well as you know they are comfortable!🤍
@@gabrielagutierrez6084 thank you SO much!!! very helpful. I will do
Extraordinary video! That last advice bit really inspired me. I’m gonna do it!
hi, ive got to move by family and belongings to Arizona in 2 months..lol I have a home in Virginia... i have already been living here in AZ for 6 months...now finally ready to move my family over here to AZ.. building a home in Surprise!! I love this video..great help!!!
ARIZONA IS NICE
Yep. I'm with you California. I'm watching this video planning a move out of CA.
Me too, LOL! 2023 is the year for us!:-)
These tips are so helpful. I don’t want to drive , but I have a huge tv I got really cheap on Black Friday and I don’t know what to do because it’s the biggest thing I have.
Loved this!!! And so much truth about CA!!!!
I love your videos! Just subscribed. Lots of helpful advice - thank you!
I moved across country twice and it was great.
Amazing video and just what I needed to hear, especially your 5th point
Thank you for sharing. This is very helpful and very motivational.
Literally watching this for my cross country move to California lmao
I used UPACK twice and had no issues. Pricey though
I just got a quote from U pack 2k for Seattle to Scottsdale. I would rather drive my car than a uhaul and I don’t want to tow a trailer. What other options are there.
5 is my favorite! So true
Love your perspective. Also moved out of California, its an absolute dump. Thanks for the positive tips! Very helpful and informative.
I played kickball with Club Waka in RVA!!!!
That was awesome! Thank you so much for the kind words!
Watching this video bc I want to move to AZ and you just gave me hope! :')
Thanks for your tips. I appreciate you sharing your moving experiences.
Thank for this informative video!!!
Any tips on how to avoid Penske trucks from getting stolen?
Any experience on Penske's handling of the situation if the truck breaks down on a highway?
amazing moving tips! saw none of these in other videos
Great video! Liked, shared, and subscribed.;-)
I'm planning to move to LA. I have met a lot of people there and I really enjoy like minded people. :D Thanks for the tips.
Louisiana?
Great video. So encouraging and full of useful information.
Great tips! Thanks so much.
just what I needed! Thanks 🤗
I needed to hear this!!! Thx friend!
Wow! Thank you for this video! My partner and I are moving from California to Washington. He wants to higher U-pack boxes and ship but I can't get over the cost. I am leaning towards U-Haul but am terrified about driving a heavy truck over the grapevine! LOL There are some things with a self-driving Uhaul truck like whether possessions will be safe in the Uhaul overnight while at a hotel and the limited number of days/mileage you get (5 days/1500 miles). Any thoughts on this?
Honestly, I wouldn’t be afraid about driving over the grapevine. I recently drove a moving truck from AZ to CA by myself, up the 8 freeway near Mt. Laguna in San Diego County. Those are some super steep and winding mountain roads. If you take it slow (45-50 mph) and stay in the right lane, you will be just fine :)
I also wouldn’t be worried about leaving possessions in the truck overnight at a hotel. If you park it in a well lit area in sight of the hotel, and put a solid lock on the back door, you should be fine. I also did this myself too, and had no issues.
Also, instead of using Uhaul, maybe consider using Penske through Home Depot. You get unlimited miles!
@@diligenthandsfinance8326 If there are any fences close to parking spots, back in if you can, so door/lock are not as easy to access. See if you can park where you can look out and see truck?
@@birdlady2725 Great idea about the fence!!
Huh? The Grapevine is just a stretch of freeway. The problem is Washington. It's a liberal toilet, just like the State you're fleeing.
How many miles, roughly, was this move? CA to East coast rental truck is looking like $4K +, not including gas.
A move that long you'd be better off just using a Relocube from ABF. It'd be about the same price.
Liar
Did you town your car??? Yes I prefer penski.... they are the best, best trucks!
This was Great and inspiring. thank you:-)
...just like moving trucks, storage containers come in all sizes..
Anyone moving from north Florida to Las Vegas area in June????? Let's coordinate to share a truck!
Moving to California this year and I’m excited. I really like the state. I can grow food and enjoy outdoor living all year round. Easy to live a vegan lifestyle there. Going to love raising my kids there as well. Would t raise my kids in Indiana and Alabama. Nope! I’d move out of the country before living there.
I’m learning Mandarin and there is a lot of opportunity to speak with native speakers. No place his perfect; good and bad everywhere. No city in the US is as convenient as New York but it’s also dirty and can get cold. I will miss the extensive but dirty public transportation 😂 California is great but it has smog and lots of traffic. To each his own! Best of luck with everyone’s moves.
What are you talking about? There's no smog in California. You can grow food year-round in Florida too. California is death. Why do you think everyone is leaving?
@@joevarga5982 you have your opinion and I have mine. Have a blessed day!
@@cassball7 I see you're not a thinking person.
@@joevarga5982 you have a problem sir. Don’t bother me again! Enjoy Florida

Funny I found you because I'm looking to move from Arizona to Tennessee lmao.
Thank you for this video
You've got a good head on those shoulders Missy
You are soo amazing you gave me such encouragement
So awesome! Thanks
Thanks that was awesome!
Thanks!
Wait so u can hire movers to just pack the truck? That’s what I need!
Thank you very much. You gave me some great advice, things I had been wondering about!
Thank you!!!
Great video! What is your approach to finding doctors, dentists, etc when you arrive at the new location?
When I've moved and needed to find a new doctor or dentist, I've always looked at google reviews to find the top rated/reviewed providers in my neighborhood or city. Then, I'll go to my insurer's website and see which of them are covered providers under my insurance policy. This has worked for me :)
Ask around for recommendations. Ask many people who you meet during regular errands, such as at the grocery store. Also, you can make an appointment with a doctor or dentist for a consultation, which is usually free. You spend 10 to 15 minutes with them to check out their vibes and ask them about their practice and methods of treatment. You get a good sense of who they are, and how they'd fit with you, and they get free advertising for only 10 minutes of their time. If you don't go to them, you might suggest them to someone else. Everyone wins.
Great video ❤ Michigan to Mississippi
Penske is charging me 4700 versus uhual of 2300
Oof... did you find a cheaper alternative?
@@dmatthews077 no, not yet. I've looked at options of purchasing a suv and renting some of the ubaul cargo trailers or freight shipping. Still moving.companies and pods are up there in price as well
@@JuicyFashion11 it's crazy, for 4700 you could probably purchase an old box truck.. I've even considered that.
@@dmatthews077 IKR a lot of options. If I would of known that this would have been the issue I would of done a future reservation and just kept changing the date
This could be a silly question:
Let's say I rent a moving truck in the state I live in. When I get to my destination and unpack, do I drive the truck back to the very place I got it from, or can I drop it off at the same company in the new state I move to? I hope my question makes sense. Also, thank you for the helpful video!
Pretty much any truck rental service will let you return to a different location, if your trip is one way! :)
@@diligenthandsfinance8326 Great, thank you for the help!
In-town or local moves (within the state's borders) can be rented and returned at the same location. OR, you make a one way reservation with the moving truck company, let's say San Francisco, CA to Denver, CO. The company suggests several drop-off places close to Denver, such as Englewood, Lakewood, or Wheatridge. If you drop the truck off in, for example, Colorado Springs, (an hour south of Denver), you probably will have to have a good reason for doing that (instead of dropping it off in Denver), or you may be allowed the extra miles (depending on who is working that day), or you may have to pay a drop-off fee for not dropping it off in Denver as planned. The truck company expects customers to return a truck where the contract says it will be returned. That way they know if they'll have that truck to rent to another customer. If you don't show up as planned, then the truck company probably won't have a truck there to fulfill the next reservation for that size truck.
@@zwebwench Thank you, I appreciate your help!! (:
$2,000 is crazy cheap a truck alone to move is no less than $4,300
me watching this as Im thinking of moving to Sacramento... lol
Damn wish my move would be $2500. Things have changed In 2 years
Which tripe a insurance do you buy? and is the triple a insurance instead of the insurance offered by penkse, or supplemental?
English, please.
she said "Delaware" on UA-cam!!
Did you also drive your own moving truck ?
Yes!
You have a very sweet feminine voice. Thank You for the tips! I'll be moving soon too.
