Welcome to one of the greatest and most rewatchable and shareable movies ever! Glad you enjoyed it and caught so much, and went in blind. Every minute of this movie is perfect, every line, every scene, every set-up has a pay-off. The amount of physical comedy helps it translate internationally to any audience, the cartoon physics slowly escalate to lure you into the 'rules' of this little world. Appreciate how Stephen Chow wrote, directed AND starred in this /original/ film and assembled some of the greatest martial arts movie making talent of all time, including the editors, sound mixers, composers, alongside the choreographers and stuntment. Look up the actors for Beast, Landlord and Landlady and you'll see what they meant by "the true masters together in one room." They're all
Chow's previous film was Shaolin Soccer, very similar and you'll enjoy. He later did 2 "Journey to the West" movies, which is a batshit crazy bonkers take on the same chinese myth Dragonball was based on.

This is a very asian movie with many reference to chinese culture, and paying homage to western movies and pop culture,
made in ways of creativity, style, humour, sarcasm, random relevant inserts, to invoke irony, comedy
There are definitely obvious cultural difference and understanding for the both of you that may have impacted your viewing experience,
and that you two have different personalities as you are not the humourous types,
as many scenes did not manage to tickle you, and you would take them as more serious instead of treating it as intentional comedy,
but, there are still some scenes where they appealed to you a lot more.
So it is interesting to see that we are all largely different and unique.
Stephen Chow has the ability to design his humour on a universal level of understanding, just like Mr Bean, but with more context to randomness and sarcasm.

You hafta watch Shaolin Soccer. I also watched Hustle before that one, and I think it made it way more satisfying. It's the same director. It's a lot of the same cast, but they play completely different roles.
I kinda think it's funnier too.

The guy with the thing tied around his head was a Shaolin monk, The guy with the rings on his forearms is a Hung Gar Kung Fu master. Toad guy did Bruce Lee knockoff movies, Land lady studied peking opera with Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung under the same teacher. She didn't plan on being in this film but she was there for a friend and they begged her to take the role. Landlord was a Bruce Lee stunt double, I think he did the backflip scene in Enter the dragon.

FYI, this is Stephen Chow's best film ever. He's the star, director, writer and producer. Kung Fu Hustle has one of the best martial artist choreography mixed with SFX ever made in HK.
Since this is a parody, it has tons and tons of reference including: Roadrunner cartoon, Scorcese's Gangs of New York, Buddha's Palm, Tjin Yung's Eagle Heroes, Shanghai Bund, and so much more. You'll find a lot of articles covering the reference listed in this film.
Kungfu Hustle is definitely one of the rarest movie where you'll find new things every rewatch you have.

So, I grew up in China, let me explain a bit of the subtext. The super kung fu is both based on actual Chinese legends and Hong Kong pop culture. Chinese legends have martial artists using 'ki' or 'chi' (pronounced like key or chee) allowing them to do amazing things like run on the air and such, or mix it with spooky otheworldly crap to shoot ghosts at people out of musical instruments. Seriously actual Chinese legends get REALLY weird, check out 'Journey To The West' sometime if you really want to see a drug trip inspired story.

Good on you for catching the original language version! It's not a huge deal, but it's always better to hear the intonation of the original actors, their voices - because that's part of their performance! If you can keep up with the subtitles, then it just makes the movie so much better imho (Personally, I'm from a small country with no culture for dubbing or remaking, so we're used to foreign languages and reading subtitles!)

This 64 year young Aussie likes the English dubbed with English subtitles.. it's a HOOT,!!
Also the director of Kung Fu Hustle was invited to & did direct one of the Matrix trilogy, if you have seen it as well then you'll know the scene links both movies. If you haven't seen all the Matrix trilogy then you should recognise the scene when it tries to jump off the screen at you.
