First to comment...WooHoo...Hey Darren & Aorn & Ananda Great video..I do not know how you keep up the dialog though...LOL out the classroom I am not that verbose.....as to street food I have had no problems...But as you know I got sick on my way home either from airport food or airplane food since it didn't kick in til I got home after 30ish hours of traveling......
It all looked yummy Darren. Exspecily that shrimp & veggies. So I made me some elbow noodles & tomato juice mixed together. I love that stuff. I grow up on it. 3 kinds of elbow noodles, Mac & cheese, Mac & tomatoes, & chilli Mac. Good old time favorites. Chilli not spicy. I can't handle the spicy. It hurts coming out..... lol.... Great video. See ya on the next one, Chris from Missouri
Yes, it's all very yummy Chris, especially the shrimps😋 Hahaha, you've just gotta eat more spicy stuff, your body will get used to it eventually ;). Glad you enjoyed the video, I hope all is well in Missouri!
I loved this video. That Ananda cracks me up. He's such a ham wanting to be on camera. Not too long ago he hated it. Your dinner looked delicious, thanks so much for sharing your evening out with us. Big hugs to you all hun, I hope you have a great week 😁
Thanks Gina. Yes, Ananda is warming to the camera gradually, depending on his mood 😁 Glad you enjoyed the video, we hope you have an awesome week too. Big hugs back to you!
Hello Darren, thank you so much for your amazing content about Krabi as a town, the food, the people and mostly about Thailand as a whole. I actually found your channel by explore/recommended so i thought why not check it out, the more i watched the more i enjoyed the videos. Also i really like your honesty on the videos about the food etc and also tips such as which place to visit etc and you’re very funny to watch. Keep up the work and the channel, You make me want to travel back again to Thailand. Have a nice day! :) PS a fellow thai- fan living in Sweden
Awesome vlog, really looking forward to this in April. We were planned to stay at the end of Yarrowat Rd, 🙁 current situation with Cov.. we have moved a little further away. (I don’t know if it’ll help LOL) 🙏
Hey guys! Love and miss Ao Nang! In Laos, we have seen dat the moo kata version. Miss the food so much! Good to know about you and your family a bit more over here. Cheers!
Hye Darren Aun Ananda... Really delicious food over there... Really high quality vlog from you. Really helpful Darren. Safe always, you always have my pray. Thanks a lot buddy for the amazing vlog.
Very nice and chilled vlog. Best way to transfer money these days is a TransferWise or similar card. Keep it in your room so you can’t lose it and keep it at zero balance, then instant transfer just before you want to withdraw, feeds are tiny as you’re not carrying around a lot of money
Hi Darren, Ong here, from Malaysia. Remember? Chanced upon your Vlog. You look good. Love your videos!!! Keep it up. Would love if you could add in some off the beaten track places of interest.
Hi Ong, thank you! I hope you're well! I do try to include off the beaten track places in my content, here are a few of the many unseen places I've featured in the past. One of your best videos. Love the Q & A format ......please do more ! (You must get tired of the same old questions though.) You really are living the dream life....and its obvious from your videos that you appreciate what you have. Jim. 👍🇦🇺🙏
Darren , that was a great video , I think one of your best , good to see your good wife talking on camera more, you answered so many questions the new travelers might have..Fantastic
Great video! I think the best way to get from Phuket airport is the Phuket smart bus... then the local songtaews depending on where you are going. Flying could also be an extremely affordable option. The BTS in Bangkok was easy and very cheap as well. I would recommend having extra cash in case of emergencies. We bring about $500 cash. Exchange about $50 USD at the airport... their exchange rates are BAD!! Just get enough to get transport to wherever you are going, food, etc. Exchange places are everywhere in tourist areas.. we mainly just do a weekly atm transaction which gives you the actual rate but the fee is about $4-5. My wife and I budget about $40 per day total, which would include food, drinking, buying souvineers, transport. Every dollar adds up when you’re there for a month😜
nice time, take your time...pork and shrimps always good for BBQ. The "little ham" Ananda walking up front by the cam. Looks like he will fit right in like his pop on cam, the next "foodie talent" ay mate?! "Ananda Eats" or something like that. Just as long as he sends Mom and Pop a "check"? ha!😄 The closest ' grill ' where i am located has either beef 'ribeye' for Philly Steak Sand. or double 8" pork fennel sausage links on bread with peppers/onions $8 U.S. Ive said it before, "that grill flavor" !! Like you mentioned, the "broth" flavor after all the mix of meat/seafood/ veggie. Good luck darren, Ananda, Aorn.
Yes, Ananda sometimes likes the camera, but it's always on his terms and often when I want him to do something he has other plans. He might have to recruit a different cameraman for his channel ;). Yes, it's hard to go past that grill flavor. Your grill options there sound rather tasty too! Hope you have a great week Ross.
First of all, thank you for your amazing videos , I love watching them. You have a lot of fans in the Middle East so could you kindly mention if the Resturant’s you go to offer a halal option ? Also, it’s so enjoyable that you do your videos with your wife and your super cute son.
Thanks a lot Salwa. Yes, I do mention if they are halal, there's a playlist of videos I've made featuring halal eating options here: ua-cam.com/play/PLNLfDOIkGB13haYR7lW8hjzlzInvByVi6.html
I was in Thailand for 2 weeks (1 week in Patong/1 week in Chiang Mai) in November, 2017. I can give some insight on how much it cost to vacation in Thailand. I flew into Phuket Airport from San Francisco International Airport (United States). Once we got our belongings, we needed to exchange US dollars to Thai Bahts. We knew that weren't going to get the full amount when we exchanged currencies. We took the meter taxi from the airport to our AIRBNB stay (Patong Tower) and we paid the driver 800 baht and tipped him 200 baht which equaled to about 34 US dollars. I spent an average of 100 US dollars per day which is pretty expensive for my vacation in Thailand. Majority of the cost was the activities I did such as multiple island tours, Tiger Kingdom, and Parasailing. Phi Phi Island tour - $70, Banana Island tour - $50, James Bond Island tour- $60, Tiger Kingdom - $50, Parasailing - $50, Zip Line - $65, and other smaller various activities. I regret doing the Tiger Kingdom tour because I had a feeling that the adult and baby tigers were probably sedated and I do not reccomend it to anyone. Also, do not do parasailing because it was the biggest rip off and they charged me and my friend $50 for only a 2 minute ride since we timed each other. Tuk Tuk is very expensive in Patong because every driver will decline service if price is below 300 baht. Even for a 3 block ride, they still will charge 300 baht minimum. Chiang Mai is a whole different story as prices were almost half the price of Patong on almost everything, except souveniers. I enjoyed Chiang Mai more than Patong. Overalll, expect to get overcharged everywhere, especially in Patong. I once paid $100 for a seafood dinner in Patong and all I got was a lobster, steamed fish, and 2 bowls of rice with 2 drinks. I highly reccomend visting Chiang Mai and other non touristy locations such Krabi and Rawai.
Like most beach towns, prices in Phuket/Krabi/Samui/Etc would be more expensive than the rest of Thailand. If there's a next time for you in that country, try using Grab (IOS/Android app) which is like Uber and their rates are cheap. I was in Thailand back in April for Songkran (Thai New Year) and found the service to be quite decent in Chiang Mai, Pattaya, and BKK. No haggling, no muss, no fuss, and it's far cheaper than most taxis or tuktuks. Daily expenditure varies from person to person but $100/day sounds right based on those excursions. Fortunately or unfortunately, Thailand is no longer a cheap destination especially in high traffic and touristy areas.
Darren, you mentioned in the video you love Chiang Mai Khao Soi. We visit Chiang Mai often and live Khao Soi too. We’ll be in Phuket at end July, any suggestions for a great Khao Soi in Phuket? Appreciate some suggestions. Thanks
Sorry Richard, I have virtually no experience with khao soi in Phuket. I ate it once about 5 years ago in the Central Festival food court and it was ok. I saw a lady selling khao soi at Chao Fa Variety Weekend Market (aka Naka Market) in Phuket Town a few weeks ago. I didn't try it, but her sausages were great! They're the only 2 leads I have I'm afraid.
Our favorite style of cooking when we're in Thailand. Phone up and have pot and coal delivery and when they drop off they take an order for meats , seafood and wedgtables 😉 don't worry Ning pronounces vegies the same way . The whole family sits out the front cooking all night .
Here's a playlist of videos I've made in the past featuring different types of hotpot in Thailand: ua-cam.com/play/PLNLfDOIkGB13NuRXM6QypNWVC2b6b9LHS.html MK is a very popular hotpot restaurant chain in Thailand. You'll find one of their restaurants in practically every shopping mall in Thailand.
I hope you don't mind me asking. But how did you get the chance to live in thailand. Something I read said you had to got there to stay you need to have a job lined up. Also you past job as an engineer what do you teach on the schools moe?
No problem re you asking. I came here on a tourist visa initially and while I was here I was offered a job in a school. I have never worked as an engineer, I have worked as a scientist though. At schools in Thailand I have taught English, maths, science and health.
In my opinion, the best way is to visit schools in early March with copies of your CV in hand and ask them if they have any jobs for the coming school year (which usually starts in early May). There are lots of other suggestions on Google too: www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&ei=c0AxXYn0KKCSvQTA_7jYCA&q=find+teaching+job+in+Thailand&oq=find+teaching+job+in+Thailand&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0i8i30l2.20767.25513..25920...0.0..0.112.577.4j2......0....1..gws-wiz.......0i71j35i304i39j0i8i7i30.ZcyldgCitsc&ved=0ahUKEwjJ-dOtjMDjAhUgSY8KHcA_DosQ4dUDCAo&uact=5
Briefly... Due to your quick decision from a few holidays and loving Thailand, to then be living in Thailand in a pretty short time. How do you support your family & Visa used? (As saving for this or early retirement seems unlikely and not planned) Love the vids, keep up the great work and thank you!
What is the attitude towards African Americans? I would like to bring my daughters for a 3 week vacation next October. What should we do to prepare? What should we know? How is the weather at that time? We are all adults and one is a vegetarian. Thank you.
Hi, I've never hear of there being any attitude to African Americans here. I covered many topics in this video, including the weather in October. All the best.
Thanks, we are looking forward to our trip. Hopefully we'll see you when we get to Krabi. Our journey will be Chaing Ma, Bangkok, Phuket and Krabi. So excited! Love to see you and Aorn interact. Ananda is so handsome, does his name carry a meaning? Keep the videos coming, love to you all from America!
Thank you :). It sounds like a great holiday you have planned! Ananda means "bliss, extreme happiness". Aorn wanted to give him a name that had parts of her name and parts of mine, so that's how we chose his name. Maybe see you in Krabi next October.
I’d be too impatient to cook so little at a time. I suppose it really is a perfect setting for lots of talking (Q&A). Also had no idea you were such a brainiac! Mr Researcher 🤪 PS I am also left handed!!
Love your videos - I watch them every week. Best regards to you and all your family, I thought one of the "cutest" parts was when Aorn gave that 'girly' laugh - I thought it very appealing, - I have never heard her laugh like that before. You seem to eat sea-food a lot, - (sort of 50/50 with meat dishes), - not an item eaten in such large quantities in the UK and then really only when one has a 'day at the beach' and not with the sauces and vegetables you add. The H&S people are poking their noses into everything nowadays - (at least they are over here), all they are doing is producing a generation of young people with no 'resistance' to any 'bugs', - as you say cooking is only common sense whatever the food is. If they saw those 'pretty' cooking burners on your table in order to cook the food to your taste they would immediately ban them as a fire hazard. Did you know over here they make restaurants and cafe's have at least 5 different coloured handled knives (and 'chopping' boards to match) to cut different types of food, - (red for meat, blue for fish, green for vegetables, plus about 3 or 4 others), - oh how I long for some of the 'dishes' that you and Aorn eat, - the few ingredients you can get over here are always canned and I think that ruins the flavour straight away.
Thanks Christopher. Yes, seafood is quite affordable here, it's easily accessible, fresh and we love it, so yes, we do eat it regularly. re the H&S people: Yes, I know what it's like. Common sense still rules supreme here, I do like that about Thailand, and I also like the availability and range of fresh food. Thanks a lot for watching, glad you're enjoying the videos :)
Your wife looks beautiful when she's happy! I enjoy watching your videos immensely. Curiosity (& don't feel obligated to answer!), what is the age gap between you and your wife? Did her family have any problem with it?
darrenb3 Thanks for the reply. That’s wonderful to know! Your family is beautiful by the way. Keep up the great vids. I also will make a donation to your channel. :)
You're welcome, and many thanks for that, your donation will be going towards new equipment to keep me making videos. Thanks again, I really appreciate it :)
Yes, in order to teach in Thailand legally you need a degree from an internationally recognised university, the degree can be in any discipline. They are very strict on this nowadays, in the past people with fake degrees had been able to get jobs, this is not possible now. The Teachers' Council of Thailand has stricter steps than they used to have in issuing the necessary paperwork to get a work permit. I worked with a lady who had been working here as a teacher for 14 years, but when the process changed about 5 years ago she couldn't get her work permit renewed, and she had no option but to return home to the UK. What do I recommend? Either: a) Spend the 3 to 4 years and get a degree, or b) Do some research and try and find a country where you don't need a degree to become a teacher.I hope that helps.
hello darrenb3
you are best of the best Thai food, travel, markets, Thai street food, or Thai culture you'll find them all video

Thank you :). It sounds like a great holiday you have planned! Ananda means "bliss, extreme happiness". Aorn wanted to give him a name that had parts of her name and parts of mine, so that's how we chose his name. Maybe see you in Krabi next October.
Darren are you going to be doing a Phuket meet up in August?
Unfortunately we probably won't be able to get to Phuket in August.
great Darren, because we have a to of questions...and not only about food. Want to have more informations about Thailand..Q&A oftenly????
I’d be too impatient to cook so little at a time. I suppose it really is a perfect setting for lots of talking (Q&A). Also had no idea you were such a brainiac! Mr Researcher 🤪
PS I am also left handed!!
What is name this place my friend?
It's name is กันเองหมูกระทะ (Kan Eang Moo Kata). All the restaurant's details are in the description below the video.
Thank you so much 🌹

Sending our love back to you 💙
Your wife looks beautiful when she's happy! I enjoy watching your videos immensely. Curiosity (& don't feel obligated to answer!), what is the age gap between you and your wife? Did her family have any problem with it?
Thank you. Aorn is 26 and I am 48. No, Aorn's family had no problem with us getting married. I knew other members of Aorn's family before I knew Aorn.
darrenb3 Thanks for the reply. That’s wonderful to know! Your family is beautiful by the way. Keep up the great vids. I also will make a donation to your channel. :)
You're welcome, and many thanks for that, your donation will be going towards new equipment to keep me making videos. Thanks again, I really appreciate it :)
At time 9:24. The best time to go to Thailand for your first trip is on your birthday.
Good plan!
Did you need a degree to become a teacher, or for someone planning on coming to Thailand to teach, without a degree, what do you recommend?
I'm living in the UK and leaving the EU can I still live away?
I don't know UK/EU laws sorry, I'm Australian :)
@@darrenb3 no worries thanks though hope you and your family keep eating :p
