This is the first reaction that I've seen to this - so as a Canadian - Thank You. We don't need a lot of flash, glitz, and glamour to get our message out. A studio full of Canada's GREATEST artists poured their hearts out in an amazing song - to raise money for those who desperately needed it. And David Foster is one of the BEST producers to date in the music industry. Working with not only Bryan Adams - but Celine and Whitney as well. I'm very proud of this song - it's absolutely one of Canada's best.
Beautiful recording done to raise funds in 1985 for the famine in Etbiopia. Who's who of the Canadian music industry joined together to perform this masterpiece produced by David Foster and friends. Gordon Lightfoot drove up in his pickup, Joni and Neil grabbed a cab together, while others showed up in their limos. It raised 3.2 million dollars for Ethiopia. Made us Canadians so proud. 🇨🇦🇨🇦 Harri. Thanks Harri and Charlene. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada. 🇨🇦
As Canadian 🇨🇦 I have and always love this song, it is better then the one to the south. I know every word. One of my favorite singers Gordon Lightfoot( RIP) opens it up... everyone there I am proud to say I can I identify and listen to their music in their own right. Like platinum Blonde parachute club, Carol Pope, Del bello, lover boy, Martha and the muffins, and so on. The documentary of the making of this is really cool to watch and listen to. Merry Christmas all! Peace and Love from 🇨🇦
There was a wonderful documentary about the making of this, funny and touching. It wasn’t easy to get all this talent together here as about 1/2 live in the US and it was shot in one day, except for the final mixing and editing . Proud moment.
Mike Reno comes out looking really good in the documentary. Even the young, cocky Corey Hart foreshadows his thoughtful future. Anne and Sylvia never looked better and Jane Siberry is cute as a bug talking about cows with Joni Mitchell and Lorraine Segato.
As a proud Canadian, this was one moment in time that should have been recognized by the world. What a Group of PURE talent! We were over shadowed by the Americans as usual. That being said, we produced a classic hit with our biggest stars! Bravo Canada! Well Done! So Well Done!
Maaan, BA kills it, what a voice! By the way "The director" freaking out is in fact the producer and co-songwriter of the song (with Bryan Adams,Jim Vallance)...the legendary David Foster
First time I have seen this reviewed. Always thought it was at least as good or better than "We are the World" but never seems to be remembered. Thanks for the recommendation and review !
Genious so greatful! Had the tape of we are the world .. in greece europe. Listened to that song everyday. It was my first and only tape. Back then i had no idea who all were, now it all makes sense why i could not stop listening to it. The video was done like that to not spend money and to bring charity money.
There's a small bit of footage included in the original video for this which shows that year's NHL all-star players singing a part of the chorus, which included superstar player Wayne Gretzky.
We Canadians are not as flashy as our neighbours down south. LOL I think it looked a little more subdued because of the seriousness of the cause. Great seeing this Harry. The who's who of the Canadian music scene at the time. You should check out Bruce Cockburn, Wonder where the lions are, The coldest night of the year. Cheers 🇨🇦
Agree on Bruce, he is wonderful. Ran into him (literally) coming out of a grocery store when he played a festival in my former home city. Very nice man and so talented.
I did think maybe thats why they played it down.Interestingly,i saw a pic online..of the video and looked much more different. It was brighter and livelier
Charlene - This was exceptional, and I never knew anything about this Canadian fundraiser until now. Great submission and reaction by Harri, our Master of Ceremonies.
Recorded on February 10, 1985. David Foster, who's playing the piano at the very beginning, along with Bryan Adams, Jim Vallance (drums) and Jim's wife Rachael (french Canadian lyrics), wrote the song. This song and "We Are The World" both tied for winning Grammy Awards in 1986.
Such talented musicians giving their time for a great cause. As far as the video being dull comment goes, things were not sparkling and flashy in Ethiopia, so why would they want to do a glitzy video. What makes the video shine is the love and intensity with how they performed. I'm glad you enjoyed it! ❤
Even without Leonard Cohen, that has to be the greatest collection of songwriting talent ever assembled. Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young, Bruce Cockburn, Brian Adams, RushDavid Foster, Burton Cummings, Dan Hill, the Tysons, Ronnie Hawkins, Tom Cochrane and so many more.
Some other songwriters were Murray McLauchlan, Lorraine Segato, and if you watch the making of Tears are Not Enough video a really cute interaction between Joni Mitchell and Jane Siberry talking about cows.
You are spot on about the drab look. I can only surmise that time restraints and a desire to funnel as much $ as possible to the cause are reasons. A few other "missing" folks would be Celine Dion, k.d. lang, Robbie Robertson, Doug Bennett, Paul Anka ( a huge name, from the 50's to the late 70's) and a GREAT Quebec writer and singer, Michel Pagliaro. The great Ian Tyson, the prolific Randy Bachman, and the legendary Leonard Cohen are also not included.
There are many performers here likely unknown to non-Canadians worth a look at: Bruce Cockburn, Carole Pope (Rough Trade), Jane Sibbery, Platinum Blonde, Parachute Club (Lorraine Segato), Aldo Nova, The Spoons, Kim Mitchell (male). Of the three French singers, Robert Charlebois (with curls) is an absolute icon in Quebec, Claude Dubois is a very well-known performer, while the woman (Véronique Béliveau) had a decent career.
this was all done in one day.they all flew into toronto in the morning and 5 hours later it was all done. everyone donated there time ,you cant expect miracles in one day.$3 million was raised thats what matters not a video
The comment about the video being 'drab' is explained by it being put together very last minute - it was not easy to get these artists together in Toronto for the recording on short notice. There's also a documentary about the making of it where the producer says: 'No, we're not sending a limo to pick them up. How would that look when you're you're doing a benefit for people who are starving? They can take a taxi.' This was purposely not about 80s glitz and glam. I'm glad.
Imo, this is the best song written for the Ethiopian famine. The British one, Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas is limited (somewhat) to playing it only in December. Also, and this is my opinion, there's really not much to the lyrics or the melody. The American response, We Are the World, has a prettier melody but unless you're watching the video there's not much to make a person think about those who are suffering. And I know that the intention of "we are the world" is to say that "we" are no different than those who are suffering, but after a while it sounds as if the song is about those who are singing, not those in need. Again, my opinion. But Tears Are Not Enough, even in the title indicates that the tears ,and in today's social media trend of posting photos or badges or "my thoughts and prayers are with...", are not enough. You need to act. I've listened to this song and I can think about the Ukraine, Turkiye and Syria, the fires in Australia, the flooding in India/Pakistan, New Zealand... Different needs in different places in the world and the words still apply. I also think it has the prettiest melody of the three. Yes, I'm Canadian but I grew up overseas and the only English radio station we had was American. So I'd heard the first two and knew them well. It wasn't until the mid-90s that I even heard the Northern Lights so I don't really come to this with a heavily patriotic bias. Anyway, my 50¢.
Totally agree with you. Of the 3 songs I think these lyrics by Bryan Adams and his co-writer point the finger at the rest of the world asking what are we going to do about it. When are we going to start walking the walking instead of talking the talk. Tears, thoughts and prayers, do not feed the starving, bring back loved ones taken out by violence and aggression. With the short amount of time they had to pull this together I don't think visual entertainment for the masses was at the top of the list. Here we are, almost 40 years later. Enough said.
I think the video looks like it does because they were on a tight schedule, and the only video equipment available was from the CBC News department I assume.
