  • I was gifted The Copenhagen Trilogy by Tove Ditlevsen* as a thank you gift a few weeks ago and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I found the references to the Vesterbro area of Copenhagen particularly fascinating and decided to make a video showing the key places Tove mentions in the first book, Childhood.
If you have not read the book I can really recommend it. The full English translated trilogy was was published by Penguin Random House in 2021. I also enjoyed Tove's other translated book, The Faces, which was also published in 2021.

I have always loved Tove Ditlevsen, and how cool is it that they translated her books!! I grew up in Birkerød, where she lived for some years in the 50's. But it was only about ten years ago I was told that she lived there and its soooo closed to my mums house! Kinda cool :)

Thank you so much for this video! The trilogy was an absolutely fantastic read. Watching this makes “Childhood” (and some parts of “Youth”) just come alive. Hope to visit someday. 😊

Delighted you enjoyed it. I did try and include some places mentioned in the latter two books but she is less clear about those locations. If you haven’t read it I can really recommend her book Faces as well. It is semi autobiographical and you can see parallels between the last book in the trilogy. It’s also available in English.

@@DejligeDays No worries, I think the locations in the video are enough to get a feel for what Denmark was like during the trilogy ☺️. Thank you as well for the recommendation. I’ve been meaning to read more books written by Tove and now I have a great place to start off 😄.

I watched this video ( as well as others of yours) last week. I was so curious I jumped on Amazon and purchased the book. Thank you so much! I found it to be captivating reading and was able to create vivid images in my mind.I agree the the translation of Part 3 is not as enjoyable, but still fascinating - yet tragic. Now, I want to learn even more about Tove. I am visiting Copenhagen and Northern Jutland in June. I find preparation for a trip to be half the fun of it! I plan to retrace your steps to see the area.

This is incredible!! I'm going to Copenhagen next month and am going to track down these spots, can't wait to walk in her footsteps. Thank you for putting together this super informative video!! (P.S.: I read The Copenhagen Trilogy a couple months ago, and just attended an event with the translator of Dependency and The Trouble with Happiness, which I'm very excited to read! Aaaaand just ordered The Faces, thanks to you!!)
