The original acapella version was used by Swiss sound engineers to develop the codec for the MP3 file compression. They wanted to get a clean female voice with compression. Because of that Suzanne Vega is sometimes called The Mother of The MP3.
She originally released this as an acapella song but some early Hip Hop guys (DNA) put the beat to it and were passing it around on tape. Vega heard it and was blown away and instead of calling lawyers, she called her producers and tracked down the guys who remixed it. They took it to the studio and did a pro remix with their beats. The remix is a monster!
She was reading the newspaper about an actor "who had died while he was drinking". That was William Holden who fell and hit his head drinking.

Mosty audio nerds know this, using the original version would be better. The relation between tech and a performance another one is the length of a cd it was because it had to fit Beethoven's Ninth Symphony which was in a popular performance 74m.

"Caramel" is a good song. She's a really good storyteller. "Blood Makes Noise" has a cool sound/vibe.
FYI, this is actually DNA featuring Suzanne Vega. The original was a capella and had another verse. I've seen her in concert and she does this song as a singalong with the audience. Lots of fun.
Also, Tom's Diner is (was?) an actual restaurant in NYC. The exterior was used in Seinfeld.

Here's a bit of history the song Tom's Dinner including the"scandal". It was an original composition by Suzanne written in Tom's Restaurant (northeast corner of Broadway and West 112th Street) and was on her Solitude Standing album from the early 80s. It was written intended to be accompanied by piano and guitar. Two versions appear on the album the 1st is a capella, the 2nd is instrumental (keyboards,& guitars).
This version ya were listening to came about in early 90s ... when two British record producers going under the name DNA, **without permission** from Suzanne her label or publisher, sampled segments from Suzanne's a cappela version laying it on top of dance beat from Soul II Soul ("Keep On Movin'"). After getting permission from Suzanne who liked the mix, her record company paid off DNA and released the mix.

Wikipedia says this about the new version of "Tom's Diner": "German groups AnnenMayKantereit and Giant Rooks covered the song in 2019. The cover went viral on TikTok in March 2022, reaching 10 million views on TikTok and 45 million streams on Spotify."
Some Suzanne suggestions: "Frank & Ava", "The Queen and the Soldier", "In Liverpool", "Penitent", "Songs in Red and Gray", "Harbor Song"...

The funny thing about this song; it would later become famous as the diner Jerry, George, Kramer and Elaine dined at on Seinfeld + the guy who created the MP3 used Suzanne Vega’s voice on the a cappella version to fine tune his algorithm.

This is actually Tom's Restaurant the Diner that was made famous in Seinfeld. Coincidentally, Vega used to frequent it prior to the Seinfeld series. On the Seinfeld series they always blocked out the "Toms" part of the sign and it just always showed "Restaurant."

Great Suzanne Vega tunes to check out: "Cracking," "Marlene on the Wall," "Left Of Center" (w/ Joe Jackson!), and "Blood Makes Noise"... all great tunes... the first two are more folky... "Left Of Center" has got a lovely roll to it... and the latter a more industrial rockin' sound... She's an excellent writer / lyricist... and I just love her voice, too.

Just a friendly heads up Amber. If you are going to do the song Luca, it will break your heart. Especially since you have a son with that name. You're an empath, and it's a story about child abuse. Told from the first person perspective. You've been warned. It is a very powerful piece of music. But I don't want to see you blindsided

One of my favorite tracks Suzanne Vega appears on is a guest spot with The Smithereens on their song called "in a lonely place". It's a pretty downbeat, post break-up kinda tune but her voice in duet with the late Pat DiNizio is tremendous

And Joe Jackson is someone you have to hear as well. As close as you could get in the 80's to being a crooner. A good example of his talent, style and personality is You Can't Get What You Want 'til You Know What You Want.

What I like about this song is how it paints such a vivid picture of simplicity. You can see everything she describes with her words as clearly as if it were happening in front of you, and there's a palpable nostalgia to it. DNA made it a thousand times better with their remix. Great stuff.

  • @grapeman63

This version of the song is effectively a cover and Suzanne's vocal an extended sample. DNA were a couple of students from Bath in England who released this, without permission, in 1991(?). Suzanne's team wanted to sue them until Suzanne heard the track and decided she liked it. A deal regarding the royalties was then thrashed out. This version is shorter than the original acapella track being bereft of the final verse. It also contains more of the de-de-deda's than the original.
Interestingly, Suzanne's album "Solitude Standing" that included the original version of this song also included an instrumental reprise, so there are actually three Suzanne versions of this song!
BTW the actor who had "died while he was drinking" was William Holden, a huge Hollywood star of the fifties and sixties and Ronald Reagan's best man at his wedding. I always find it ironic that it "was no-one I had heard of".
"Solitude Standing" is an excellent album full of great songs, including my favourite (which is actually one of her oldest songs, predating her debut album) "Gypsy".
