    Maybe you know this but are just making a joke but many last names come from a tradition of taking the first name of the father. Often adding an 's' or 'son' or meaning 'child of' like 'vic' in Slavic languages or "Mac" at the beginning of Gaelic surnames .
    It's also common for people to have a long tradition of naming children after family members, including father's and grandfather's... William Carlos Williams is a perfect example of both of those things happening in one person's name. This was actually fairly common several generations ago and probably didn't sound as "silly" as it may seem now.
