He'll always be a cool and cocky movie star, but the fact that he learns from his mistakes and genuinely turns from a pompous movie star stereotype to a deep and much more reflective character is why I enjoy him as a character.
I love how Johnny acknowledged and even reassured Omni-Man that it was his own fault that he got gravely injured in the end; it really shows how much more humble he has become in comparison to the previous MK games.
He shouldn't be humble though, he hasn't been through the same amount of character development as he did in the last trilogy considering he had more time to actually learn humility

There's some fan theories that Mortal Kombat is a special situation where powers are evened until the will of one fighter succumbs to the prowess of another, and then mortal kombat is no longer in play, leading to the brutal fatalities. So it's kind of like a ritual where magic evens the playing fields for kombatants.
I'm guessing this also nullifies the lethality of most of these attacks until that condition is met? Because it looks like half of the attacks should still be leaving seriously life-threatening injuries.
That theory only exists to explain game mechanics. Not only are the fights nowhere near that vicious in actual cutscenes, but that absurd logic has to be applied to almost every fighting game.
