@@jamesguinnup3875 Sorry, but this is just a fun project for me, and I'm not looking at making or selling them as I barely trust my electronics skills to last a few hours.

Very nice, well done! Modding my Game Gear broke my heart because, having modded almost every hand-held console previously, I’d reached the point where by my hands aren’t steady enough & my eyesight sharp enough to do the fine soldering required anymore. Thankfully I did manage to buy a well modded one on eBay because that’s always a crapshoot but I would have loved to have done it myself. Whilst emulation is an option there’s nothing like playing on “real metal” & you’ve done a great job figuring this out, with it turning out as well as it did. I’d be interested to see a version 2 but what you’ve made already works great & I can see you being happy with it.
With how tricky the GG is with recapping and how precise the soldering is with the screen mods its not easy at the best of times. So sorry to hear that you couldn't do them. and yeah I could and do play GG games via emulation and got lots of options for SMS games. but some times you just want to make something silly and fun. yeah, went back and forth so much on what to do. I'd seen others modding a SMS pad to add an extra button, but I didn't like how those looked. I can see a NES controller being fine. Fantastic work 🎉 That looks excellent. Personally I'd prefer slot in from the front, so reversing the main board so the card slot would be forward facing. Very much like the Evercade.

Great consolizing mod. But you forgot one thing, 3D printing a sms cartride convertor with a first or thirt party motherbord in it to play fysical copies of sms games on it. But maybe that’s something for the future.
My original plan was just to use the flashcart for it, but I've been pleasantly surprised at how many people want to see physical SMS games running on this. and some point pointed me in the direction of the Nuby Converter, which is a 3rd party one that looks like it should do the job if look a little weird. so will have to do a follow up with it, if I was to design my own (and I'm not sure I have the skills) I'd also want something that could read sega cards.
not sure how possible it'd be... but i think something like the super gameboy on the snes would be really cool to have on either the master system or genesis, i think being able to simply play those games on already existing hardware would be pretty neat
That would have been cool, but while they used the Master System as a base for the Game Gear they improved it. and in such a way that it actually has a larger selection of colors then both the Master System and Mega Drive. Which makes any basic converter a little difficult. so you'd end up with something like the 32X.
Amazing work Gouldfish 👏I had a chance to pick up a game gear at a convention recently but was put off when the seller said that the speakers needed fixing, I bought a master system with no rf cable or joypads instead ha. Maybe you could've fixed it ha

This is really nice work you did with the Game Gear I love it to bad I sold all my loose Game Gear games or I would consider buying one of those consoles made by you 😃👍
I would design the cartridge slot much like the evercade or keep the angle on the original gamegear, my reason is that it would either be slimmer to put into a tight space or make a small display and put on top with knock on the cart port but your design is still a good one
There is another consolized case design that is closer to that, and it was tempting. but I was really wanting that top loader design, and figured it would be fun to design something my self. And this is the joy of these projects getting something that you like.
The only thing missing was to design a controller casing as well to replace the Genesis controller case and make it look more like the console you designed.
I did consider it, but having to design my own controller on top of everything else was more then I wanted to do. plus in the back of my head I kept thinking about updating it so it could take regular MD/Genesis controllers. and thanks to the comments I've been directed to a solution for that.
So you turned it into a Sega Master System? Update: Having seen the rest of the video, I like the way you consolized this, so forgive me joshing a bit!
No worries! They are so very close that its a fair comment. I knew it would be a common reaction so put the bit at the start to try and explain some of the reasoning.
This looks awesome, and I'd LOVE to try this out myself! There's only 1 thing I'd change about this, which is the link port; you GOTTA have the link port man! Cuz you know, the abundance of games that used it lol... Ok but real talk, right next to the controller port would have worked fine, then you can build an adapter harness to convert it to a controller (I think that works better than having the controller port instead, or both; since it is a Game Gear at heart after all)
It reminds me of a model 1 Sega Genesis or Megadrive. After you've perfected it, you could produce and sell these consoles. You'll make all kinds of money. Great video by the way!
Awesome project on everything but... Agghhh that Mega Drive controller missing button A kinda felt off, my OCD kicked in. I'd rather keep the button and make it "dead" or mirror it to C.
I kept going round in circles on what I wanted to do with the A button, at one point it was the same as start. and then I tried to smooth it off so it would be like there wasn't a button. But it didn't quite work out right. I've still not fully decided on the direction.
So like a... Mega Master System then? I've been curious about the Game Gear for a while lately (news of it's poor capacitors have prevented me from purchasing one though) and so the title here does intrigue me. 0:20 - Even got your branding on it as well. Real neat. Is it compatible with Master Gear converter? Does it have HDMI output? I guess I'll find out. 1:01 - I wonder if it was purely due to that greater colour palette that they never tried a Game Gear to Mega Drive player add-on, similar to how the SNES had the Game Boy Player. 3:08 - Gosh, I'd be so worried about doing all this. All the bits to it are so tiny. 4:47 - Wasn't there only two versions of the Game Gear; the original Sega one and the Mastertronic one in 2000? I guess it'd be unsurprising that they would have made adjustments to the Game Gear chip layout over time, though rather surprising given how Sega otherwise treated the system (for such a well selling system when you look at it on it's own, I'm amazed it never got a more battery efficient revision ever made). 8:51 - I did wonder how the screen was going to look. It does turn out that the blue before was just a boarder, rather than the game stretching out, so it's working much like a Game Boy Player would here. 13:02 - Being able to cut and reconnect wires like that is certainly a handy skill to have. Would save me trouble of looking for a new Wii U Gamepad charger if I could simply reconnect the wires that have split away (electric tape was saving it for a while but no more). 17:20 - Nice bit of fun with the LED light then. It's a charming touch. 18:07 - I'd have personally gone with a Sega Blue or even copied the grey grid boxing of the Game Gear boxes but it does look great. I love the raised element to the back; very distinct. 19:49 - Whoa; that's quite a different looking cart there. I had seen the Micro Machines cart but that had a reason it's unusual shape. I was about to ask why it looked so different but you then proceeded to answer that question immediately. 23:01 - A 2nd player controller port would be particularly cool. Real nice job with this.
Thanks for watching and leaving a very detailed comment! the larger color palette was a big problem with making any converter for the MegaDrive, to do it perfectly would result in something like the 32X People have done some patches to GG games to run on the SMS but they do look worse because of it. I think it also didn't help that it wasn't a massive success like the GameBoy. There were the Sega and Majesco game gears, but there were some revisions with in those. in total I think there was 6 board changes, VA0 - VA5 with the move from 2 ASIC to 1 ASIC being a big change. The final color of the machine for me was a no brainer the black of the SMS and MegaDrive, but I can see going with blue or grey would work. I designed the raised area to mimic the Game Gear carts, to give a hint of the machine it was for. Not sure how well that comes across. and yeah that Codemasters cart is an oddity!
@ I don’t blame you. There was a heck of a lot of work went into that project for sure. I’m still just recapping them so I’m a little way off emulating what you achieved. So give me 10 years of building up my skill set and I might own one too 😂
I kinda wish they had just stuck to the SMS pallet on the GG so we could have gotten an adapter to play GG games on the SMS or Megadrive. I always wished I could play GG games on the big screen like this.
Try put your 3D printer on a more stable surface. If not a sturdy table then on the floor. I noticed the table wobbling all over during your print. Simple little fix with big results. 😉 Very cool project by the way. I wish I still had my game gear, many games and the TV adaptor to watch programs.
I tried using it in a few different places with it on the floor, and while it helped with the wobbling the big issue I was having was with the first layers. once I got (mostly) over that it wasn't too bad, but never perfect. I'm still very new to 3D printing so I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for checking out the video and amazingly Game Gears don't tend to be too expensive as most of them are in need of fixing. so you might be able to grab a cheap one and fix it up.
There are some other consolizer kits but I've found they are aimed more at getting HDMI out then analogue video. As I was wondering if I could do something similar with the GBA.
Very nice work 👍 wish could put the DS games on the TV in a console I would buy that controller would be the issue though unless using the DS itself which would probably be the best idea in such a case because of the touch screen but having the game run on the TV and being wireless would be the issue.
Some one has pointed me in the direction of the "Nuby Converter" a third party SMS to GG converter that should work. as its designed so the SMS cart would sit over the screen like an shade. I'll have to make a follow up video or a short when it arrives.
Almost, a Game gear is a portable master system. But a master system isn't a console Game Gear As I mentioned at the start of the video there are a few important differences. The larger system palette (SMS 64 colors, MD/Genesis 512 colors, Game Gear 4096 colors). The Stereo audio. It also got a number of games that were exclusive to the platform, or were different to the SMS version. Some of those have fan patches to bring them back to the SMS, but they don't always look right due to the palette issue.
It somehow turned out looking like painted wood, so retro-ish enough. Even if that seem more of an Atari thing. ;) Maybe the leftover GG shell could have been used for controller. Maintaining the original feel or some such?
The wood effect wasn't planned but yeah I can see what you are saying. and I did consider something along those lines for the controller, but it would have required designing a board to fit inside or reusing an existing GG board.
also Why did you leave the power transformer for the Cold cathode backlight and the Contrast Control you shouldn't need either one of those for what you are doing.
The contrast wheel was left on initially for the other driver board / LCD kit. But after I moved off it I just left it in place. I was mostly following the instructions from that mod kit when I removed bits and I think I did them all. But it seems I might have missed something. As I said I'm no expert just a hobbist blundering his way through this.
@@Shadowfoxxy30 I figured as much but it can be hard to tell with some comments. I'll keep it in mind as I do plan on switching to a 1 chip at some point for its improved compatibility with ironically SMS games.
Or just buy a Analogue Pocket / Analogue Mega SG with a cartridge adapter :). Watching the modding is great though. I am to lazy to do it myself lol. My game gears and other retro consoles i always keep original and by fpga based consoles for the rest.. But its fascinating to see people do stuff like this, just because they can :)
If it worked it would have given me some sweet static 😉 but there are a few ways to use it, with a regular game gear as it does have composite in. or there are ways to broadcasting RF so it could be tuned in. But over all its not all that useful, just figured it would be fun to try.

Would you be up for making me one? I already have a second Game Gear (recapped by the seller), uninstalled GGTV board, and uninstalled PXLMOD (Mega Drive controller to Game Gear) board which comes with the controller port I believe, all of which I'd supply you with.
Sorry, but this was more of a passion project that took months for me to put together. And I don't trust my skills on trying to do this to some one else's machine. plus I'm not sure my 3D printer has another large print in it. it was so much work getting it to print that shell!

I used to see them a lot at pawn shops in big cities. I haven't checked any out in years though so idk how much has changed on those places now. There are many on ebay ranging from ones with mods already, ones with mod kits, bundles with games and accessories, and some that need repairs. Low and high prices.
Why... Why did you use Hammer and not like, FreeCAD or Blender or whatnot? Not to say it isn't impressive that you managed to use Hammer as a CAD program, but like... That seems a bit unnecessarily complex.
For the simple reason, I know how to use Hammer, I've been messing with Hammer 2 since CS2 dropped. and been using previous versions of Hammer for decades. Where I have 0 experience with FreeCad or Blender, so it was much faster for me to put something together in a program I knew. even if I needed to use blender to convert between formats. This wasn't a case of making things more complex for my self, it actually simplified things and saved me a lot of time.
@@GouldFishOnGames Fair. I'm surprised you got the precision you did from a level editor. If you end up doing a lot of prints going forward, it might benefit you in the long run to try out a CAD program.
Basically I set the grid size to 1, which though the conversions ended up at 1mm. Its not the best as its additive building, you can just place a negative part to create holes or gaps, so putting in the screw hole wasn't easy. As some point I'll have to learn FreeCad or Blender, but I think this workflow works surprisingly well if you know its limitations.

@@SEGALOVER95 Its an oddity, more so when it had far more then the MegaDrive. I guess the ram was cheap enough for them to do it. It is used in places as well, Ristar does some nice color changes as you move around.
I've recapped 5 Game Gears and so far only 1 of them continue to be broken after being recapped. Some machines are in worse states then others, but I'd rather try and fix them up then let them continue to rot.
The design is very ugly, And i can’t stand the fingernail polish, but apart from that… very entertaining video, i hope u will do a v2 with better design and cable placement in order to make it aviable to be redone by common users.
Not sure what I can say about the design, it came out almost exactly how I wanted it. but I guess taste is subjective and its all about what makes you happy. Like the nail polish, it makes me happy. considering I was just making a lot of this up at the time I'm quite pleased with how well the cabling and the layout turned out. the only real change for a V2 would be to move the GGTV and the sound boards around.

Is there another reason for doing that other than it’s a funny project since the Nomad is a portable Genesis?

Thanks for watching and leaving a very detailed comment!
the larger color palette was a big problem with making any converter for the MegaDrive, to do it perfectly would result in something like the 32X
People have done some patches to GG games to run on the SMS but they do look worse because of it.
Actually, you could widen the screen as well, to make it behave like a master system, but better colour palettes and whateve stuff.
Well done, also your nails!
Amazing dude I want one ❤️
Glad you like it, with how long it took to build I'm not going to be making more of them 😉
@ I don’t blame you.
It would have made things a lot easier, but Sega have to Sega!
I’ve always wondered if it would be possible to add the SMS FM synth addon board to a GG…maybe you could look into that for the V2 revision as well 😊
Try put your 3D printer on a more stable surface.
Don't forget testing Game Genie compatibility. :D
This is intriguing, I wonder if this can be done for other hand held consoles
There are some other consolizer kits but I've found they are aimed more at getting HDMI out then analogue video.
As I was wondering if I could do something similar with the GBA.
I always thought that’s what the Master System was
what about image up scaling so it fits the screen of your TV do you plan on making that work ? and showing us how.
Very awesome. Must be amazing to see on CRT TV. Now HDMI mod?
I'd love to see you hack together a Master Gear Converter so you can use this to play Master System games.
I've learned since making the video that there is a version of the SMS to GG converter that should fit.
Been in the process of tracking one down.
Cool job :)
Very nice work 👍 wish could put the DS games on the TV in a console I would buy that controller would be the issue though unless using the DS itself which would probably be the best idea in such a case because of the touch screen but having the game run on the TV and being wireless would be the issue.
very cool
Shinobi had the coolest music.
Also a guy who works on electronics with painted nails. So much chipping while working on stuff!
yeah, so many pokey sharp things to catch on!
Just take the master system converter apart and make a new shell for it. Like the master system converter for the mega drive.
Some one has pointed me in the direction of the "Nuby Converter" a third party SMS to GG converter that should work.
as its designed so the SMS cart would sit over the screen like an shade.
I'll have to make a follow up video or a short when it arrives.
the gamegear is literally just a portable master system lol
Almost, a Game gear is a portable master system.
But a master system isn't a console Game Gear
As I mentioned at the start of the video there are a few important differences.
@@GouldFishOnGames yeah thank you for clarifying
Gear Gear was my equivalent of black & white TV's turning color. But portable......
It somehow turned out looking like painted wood, so retro-ish enough. Even if that seem more of an Atari thing. ;)
Maybe the leftover GG shell could have been used for controller. Maintaining the original feel or some such?
The wood effect wasn't planned but yeah I can see what you are saying.
and I did consider something along those lines for the controller, but it would have required designing a board to fit inside or reusing an existing GG board.
Well done it’s a really nice mod. I might try it myself 🤩
Would you consider the fm board from Tim Worthington?
Thanks, I'm amazed at how well it worked, and the FM mod would be interesting but not sure if anyone has ever tried it with a Game Gear.
@@GouldFishOnGames there's now a dedicated Game Gear version of the FM board called the GGFM, from SYF.
Oh that's interesting.
Not sure I'd ready to face doing more mods to the machine but something to keep in mind for any V2
also Why did you leave the power transformer for the Cold cathode backlight and the Contrast Control you shouldn't need either one of those for what you are doing.
@@GouldFishOnGames I know I'm just letting you know those items are un necessary for what you are doing that's all.
The Analogue stuff is very cool, and its great to have those options.
This was a mix of doing it for fun as well as seeing if I could do it at all!
Would the TV tuner even do anything? Didn't they turn off the analogue signal some years ago?
If it worked it would have given me some sweet static 😉
but there are a few ways to use it, with a regular game gear as it does have composite in.
or there are ways to broadcasting RF so it could be tuned in.
But over all its not all that useful, just figured it would be fun to try.
What about a PC engine/TG 16 controller? You could just leave the select button dead as it never really did much anyway.
how about a portable master system? Or maybe a portable NES or SNES
That's pretty damn cool. Can you do that with the PSP now?
There were models of PSP that had TV out built in, so it should be easy to use those.
but its not a machine that I've ever really cared about.
I want one
Less "CONVENIENT" is what your graphic is meant to say. See if you can get a refund! Apart from that, great video!
Oh damn it! I thought that was fixed!
I'll have a word with the art guy, and seeing that is me its going to be a very one sided chat.
So you basically made a master system....
Almost, but as I mentioned at the start of the video there are a few important differences.

@GouldFishOnGames so I guess you can say it is the master system 2.
Wish I could console the PSP UMD's like a PS1
You just made a Master System

Would you be up for making me one? I already have a second Game Gear (recapped by the seller), uninstalled GGTV board, and uninstalled PXLMOD (Mega Drive controller to Game Gear) board which comes with the controller port I believe, all of which I'd supply you with.
Sorry, but this was more of a passion project that took months for me to put together. And I don't trust my skills on trying to do this to some one else's machine.
plus I'm not sure my 3D printer has another large print in it.
it was so much work getting it to print that shell!
So, you just made a Master System with a smaller display resolution?

idk what i enjoyed most, your beautiful nails or referring to Sega consoles by their European names
As a Brit I just used all the UK names with out even thinking about it.
To me it will always be the MegaDrive and the Master System !
the TV tuner was over looked
Noooooice
Next gba console
Cool little project …….anybody know where i can get a game gear with a faulty screen ? Lol
Oh, if you gunna paint you fingers nails, try to make a circuit board on them.
it’s called the sega master system

@GouldFishOnGames it's odd that a small system had more color then then master system
@@SEGALOVER95 Its an oddity, more so when it had far more then the MegaDrive. I guess the ram was cheap enough for them to do it. It is used in places as well, Ristar does some nice color changes as you move around.
Dude recapping game gears is the stupidest thing ever. I've lost 3 to faulty caps sent in by "professional" companies
I've recapped 5 Game Gears and so far only 1 of them continue to be broken after being recapped.
Some machines are in worse states then others, but I'd rather try and fix them up then let them continue to rot.
@@GouldFishOnGames Do you have any tips? My is still up in the closest, and I still have my game collection. Might give it another go
The design is very ugly,
And i can’t stand the fingernail polish, but apart from that… very entertaining video, i hope u will do a v2 with better design and cable placement in order to make it aviable to be redone by common users.
